SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A Solana Beach cafe is rebounding after a theft over the summer, new coronavirus restrictions and wintry weather.Back in August, seven of Homestead Cafe and Market's tables and chairs were stolen. Police found the culprit and got back most of their outdoor dining furniture. The entire time, the community has wrapped their arms around the mom and pop shop."People are still coming by wanting to bring stuff asking what we need," co-owner of the restaurant Marie Brawn said, thankfully."They wanted to make sure that we knew that they still want a place like this to be around after this whole mess," she said alluding to the constantly changing coronavirus guidelines for restaurants. She said many small businesses like them in the area have been shutting down."It's a bit of a roller coaster, it's been very humbling," co-owner Jamie Brawn said. The couple was ahead of the curve when the county announced San Diego was in the purple most restrictive tier this week. They already had all their dining outside. When they made that move, they were ahead of the forecast, thinking to add a waterproof custom made patio cover and heat lamps."Through the generosity of our neighbors, we were actually able to do it and get ready for winter coming," Marie said. She said a couple of loyal customers even came and sat under their new patio in the rain last weekend.Inside their cafe has been redesigned into an organic market, filled with produce, specialty cheeses, Italian sauces, beer, wine, breakfast items. They also have items for those with dietary restrictions and gifts for the holiday season. The market helps them with the overhead, keeping the business afloat. On top of it all, they're balancing distance learning with their two boys and charity work, feeding families in need in North County. "Food insecurity even before the pandemic was a huge thing on our minds and something that with the pandemic we want to keep going," Jamie said. They've donated 28,000 meals since April and hope to fund-raise through the end of the year to supply more families more food as the holidays grow closer. 2132

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - An injured sea lion spotted on a North San Diego County beach prompted lifeguards to place shark warning signs along a stretch of coastline Thursday. The incident was reported about 9:30 a.m. at 2525 South Coast Highway near Tower 11 at Cardiff State Beach, according to California State Parks officials. A jogger reported the sea lion with a missing tail and gash on its back, washed up on the beach.SeaWorld San Diego experts responded to the area but told 10News the sea lion later died due to the severity of its injuries. They confirmed the female sea lion was bitten by a shark.Lifeguards posted aggressive shark advisories for beachgoers from Cardiff Reef in the north to Seaside State Beach in the south, officials said. There was no immediate word on the type of shark involved. The incident Thursday marks the sixth shark sighting over the last several weeks in the waters off San Diego. Shark sightings several days in a row prompted shark advisories in Del Mar in July. A shark sighting in Coronado also forced lifeguards to post signs warning beachgoers about the presence of sharks. A shark advisory means that a shark has been spotted in the water and swimmers should enter at their own risk. Check out the list below for tips on avoiding any possible shark attacks:Avoid the beach at dusk and dawnStay away from river mouthsPay attention to lifeguards and their warnings 1424

Sia may not want you to see her face, but she's apparently not as shy about her other parts. The "Chandelier" singer, who usually performs with a wig obscuring part of her face, on Monday shared an image she said was of her nude."Someone is apparently trying to sell naked photos of me to my fans," Sia wrote in the caption of the photo, which shows a naked woman from the rear. "Save your money, here it is for free. Everyday is Christmas!""Everyday Is Christmas" is also the name of the singer's forthcoming Christmas album. 533

Snapchat as you know it may soon disappear.Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, said Tuesday that it is planning to redesign the messaging application to make it easier to use after facing several consecutive quarters of anemic user growth."One thing that we have heard over the years is that Snapchat is difficult to understand or hard to use, and our team has been working on responding to this feedback," Evan Spiegel, Snap's CEO, said in prepared remarks for an earnings call Tuesday.Spiegel added that the redesign could be "disruptive" to Snap's business in the short term. "We don't yet know how the behavior of our community will change when they begin to use our updated application," he said. The announcement came after yet another disappointing quarter for the newly public company.Snapchat added just 4.5 million new daily active users in the third quarter, bringing its total audience to 178 million daily users. Instagram Stories, a Snapchat knockoff product, recently hit 300 million daily users. The company's losses more than tripled from the previous year to 3 million in the third quarter, while its sales fell well short of Wall Street estimates.Even Snap's first foray into hardware appears to be a failure. The company took a nearly million writedown for excess inventory of Spectacles, its smart glasses.Snap stock plunged as much as 20% in after hours trading Tuesday following the earnings report. 1437

Small businesses employ roughly half of all Americans, but new data is showing many of these businesses are closing permanently.“It’s an excruciatingly hard decision,” said Martha Studstill. “You know small business owners put their heart and soul into their business.”For more than a decade Studstill has owned a small gift shop, Uptown Gifts, in South Carolina.“Until COVID came along we were buzzing,” said Studstill.Originally, in March, the plan for Uptown Gifts was to close temporarily for a few weeks. However, the shop has now been closed for more than three months. She has only been able to list items online, resulting in sales being down by 75%.However, sales aside and more importantly to Studstill, the danger of COVID-19, especially for someone her age, hasn’t subsided.“When we closed on March the 16, I really had no idea we would be where we are at today,” said Studstill.Studstill thought she would be reopening, not only earlier, but to fewer cases of COVID-19.Cases have actually been on the rise in her state. The uptick started most distinctly after reopenings. So, with the financial risk and uncertainty added to Studstill’s health risk of running the shop, she feels closing is her only choice.“I think if I were younger, I would not have made the same decision, but I am where I am at,” she added.Around the country, there is a wave of permanent business closures happening. One report done by Yelp shows more than 143,000 businesses listed on its platform closed between March and June. Now, roughly 35% of those businesses have indicated their closures are permanent. Most of those businesses closing are small businesses.“The numbers that are coming out are really sad,” said Frank Knapp with Small Business for America’s Future.Knapp heads the newly formed organization, pushing for better help for small businesses in Congress’ next stimulus package.“Our proposal for Small Business for America’s Future is that we need to put together grants for the really small businesses to help them get through this recession so that they are healthy on the other side and our economy can get back up and running again,” said Knapp.Saving small businesses could save jobs and be the fastest way to rebound the economy.“Small businesses hire about 50% of all workers in this country,” said Knapp, “We know from the last recession, it was small businesses that got us back on our economic feet again, not big businesses. Small businesses did the hiring right away.”“I think that this could be a defining moment where the general public could see just how important small businesses are to their community,” added Studstill. 2651
