President Trump has signed the Music Modernization Act into law, a bill that will bring sweeping changes to the way music is licensed and songwriters are paid.Supporters say the Music Modernization Act, championed by Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tennessee), will ensure that songwriters get paid fairly for their work in the streaming age.  A key aspect of the legislation is the creation of a new independent entity that will license songs to companies that play music online. The group will then pay songwriters, while digital streaming services, like Spotify or Pandora, can ask for a blanket license. This is the first overhaul to music copyright law in decades. The law will also make sure artists who made music prior to 1972 are paid.Recording artists didn't have any copyright rights in their works until 1972. Kanye West, Kid Rock and John Rich are among artists expected to attend Thursday's ceremony at the White House.   965

President Donald Trump’s longtime former attorney Michael Cohen is now featured in an advertisement against the president. In the advertisement, Cohen warns voters that Trump “can’t be trusted.”While Cohen had a privileged glance of the president over the years, his creditability has taken a hit. In 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress. Cohen admitted he lied about plans to build a Trump Tower in Russia. The former personal lawyer was also actively involved in payments on Trump's behalf to porn star Storm Daniels, which the Southern District of New York investigated for alleged violations of campaign finance. No charges were filed in that case. The ad first ran on Night 1 of the Republican National Convention on Monday, and is sponsored by American Bridge 21st Century, which is backing Trump opponent Joe Biden in the upcoming election.“I was complicit in helping conceal the real Donald Trump. I was part of creating an illusion,” Cohen said"He can't be trusted and you shouldn't believe a word he utters," Cohen added. "So, when you watch the president, this week, remember this. If he says something is huge, it's probably small. If he says something will work, it probably won't.”Beyond the ad, Cohen is becoming a more vocal critic of the president. Cohen confirmed that he will be speaking to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow for an upcoming segment. Cohen is also releasing a book titled, “Disloyal: A Memoir: The True Story of the Former Personal Attorney to President Donald J. Trump” The book will release next month. The people who know Donald Trump best are sounding the alarm: our country cannot survive four more years of a Trump presidency. In our latest ad, a former member of his inner circle & "fixer" — @MichaelCohen212 — has a dire warning for us all. #RNC2020 pic.twitter.com/suPUODOdwz— American Bridge 21st Century (@American_Bridge) August 24, 2020 1892

President Donald Trump spoke about a bunch of subjects at his White House press briefing on Wednesday.President Trump and his Coronavirus adviser Scott Atlas spoke to the media about COVID-19 vaccines' availability, which should be made available relatively soon, Trump and Atlas said."Within the first 24 hours of the FDA's approval under emergency use, we will have vaccines delivered within the first 24 hours," Atlas said. "And it will be done at virtually no cost to Americans. And the terms of the dosage, there will be -- it is anticipated that no later than January all the top priority people will have received the vaccine or can receive the vaccine."Atlas said 700 million doses would be available for distribution by the end of Q1.When asked if he was ready to sign off on the Oracle-TikTok deal, Trump said that there were still studies being done that he had not looked at, so he wasn't prepared to sign-off on anything."We need to see the deal," Trump said. "We need security, especially with what we've seen with respect to China and what's going on. We need security. They'll be reporting to me Thursday morning, and we'll let you know."Trump was thrilled to hear about the news that the Big Ten Conference would be playing football this season. He even encouraged the Pac-12 to play this season, even though they said they wouldn't play due to COVID-19 concerns."I want to recommend that the Pac-12 also get going because there's no reason why the Pac-12 shouldn't be playing now," Trump said. "I want to recommend to the Pac-12, you're the only one now, open up. Open up, Pac-12. Get going. I said the same thing to Big Ten, and they did. And now I'm saying it to Pac-12. You have time. You really have time right now. Get going."Trump also mentioned that one staffer at the White House has tested positive for the virus, but clarified that the staff member had not contacted him."I have people tested when people come into the Oval Office, Trump said during the briefing. "It is like a big deal no matter who they are. Heads of countries they all get tested. I'm in sort of a different position. Maybe if I weren't in that position, I would be wearing it more. But I wear masks, and I like to wear than when I'm in hospitals. Not for me as so much for other people." 2294

Receiving a wedding invitation should be exciting, not dreadful. But if it’s not the first one this season, or if you’re keeping a wary eye on your budget, getting that embossed white card in the mail could bring mixed emotions — and the search for a tactful way to decline. One-third of Americans have skipped or considered skipping a wedding because they couldn’t afford to attend, according to a recent survey from NerdWallet, conducted online by The Harris Poll. Their reluctance to attend is understandable, considering that the average reported budget for a close friend’s wedding gift was 8, according to the survey. “Many wedding guests look at a friend’s bridal registry and start doing the math,” says Courtney Jespersen, NerdWallet consumer saving expert. “But thankfully, the 0 coffee maker and 0 vacuum aren’t your only gift options.”Here are several budget-friendly wedding gifts that cost far less, or even nothing at all.Go in on a gift with a group. Other guests may be in the same boat, and if the wedding registry has gifts at various price points, there’s an opportunity for you to pool your gift budgets and choose something the couple really have their eyes on. Check with friends you know are on the guest list and choose an amount to spend that fits everyone’s budgets.Shop off-registry. You don’t have to stick to the wish list the couple put together, particularly if there’s nothing on there within your budget. “It’s perfectly fine for a guest to go off-registry,” says Diane Gottsman, national etiquette expert and founder of The Protocol School of Texas. “A registry is a useful guide that makes sure the bride and groom get what they need. However, a guest can also feel free to write a check or purchase something else they know the bride and groom will enjoy.”? MORE: 3 tips for the ideal wedding guestGive an experience. If the happy couple are millennials, there’s a good chance they’d love an experience more than a material gift anyway. Offer to plan and prepare a romantic picnic or help them build a garden in their backyard, Gottsman suggests.Contribute to a larger cause. If it’s good enough for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, this may work for your friends, too. More than 4 in 10 (43%) millennials say they’d prefer to donate to charity in a couple’s name than buy them a registry gift, according to the NerdWallet survey. This is an appropriate gift if the couple has requested charitable contributions in their name or if you know they feel strongly about a certain cause or organization. Most charities don’t have a donation minimum, so you can spend as much or as little as you want.Help fund a honeymoon (or home). Honeymoon and even down payment funds are increasingly popular choices for couples with pending nuptials. If your friends have set up such a registry, it’s a good option for guests with fixed budgets. ? MORE: How to cut wedding guest costsGet creative. Personalized gifts often mean the most. If you’re artistic, write the couple a meaningful poem or paint them a picture. You could also pay for someone else’s creativity — getting a relatively inexpensive photo frame personalized with the wedding date or couple’s last name, for example, makes a unique gift that may come in well under the average gift budget. “A gift doesn’t have to be expensive to be significant,” Gottsman says. “The most important thing is to let the bride and groom know you’re happy for them and wishing them a lifetime of happy memories.”More From NerdWallet 3626
