LAKESIDE (CNS) - A pileup on a rain-slick stretch of state Route 67 north of San Vicente Reservoir left one motorist dead Monday and another seriously injured. The chain-reaction series of crashes took place shortly before 7 a.m., when a 37-year-old Alpine woman lost control of her northbound Toyota Yaris near Foster Truck Trail in Lakeside, sending it veering sideways into the path of a southbound Chevrolet Silverado 3500 pickup, according to the California Highway Patrol. The resulting broadside collision fatally injured the driver of the subcompact car, CHP public-affairs Officer Travis Garrow said. Her name was withheld pending family notification.Following that crash, the truck, which was towing a trailer, careened onto the northbound side of the street, where a Chevrolet HHR station wagon hit it head-on.At that point, a Chevrolet 1500 pickup struck the back end of the HHR, and a Toyota Prius hit the right side of the Chevrolet 3500, Garrow said.Paramedics took the unidentified driver of the HHR to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego for treatment of major injuries. The other two motorists and a passenger in one of the vehicles suffered minor injuries in the wreck and did not require hospital care."It is believed all parties involved were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision," Garrow said.Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in this accident, according to the CHP. 1420

LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas couple is trying an unusual solution for rising rental costs — living out of their van by choice, and saving more than ,000 per month. The lifestyle is called "Van Life" and it is exactly what it sounds like.Lawrence and Liz Heller say the van life comes rent free and without utility bills but, instead, their major monthly expenses include their car payment, insurance and gasoline. The Hellers and their three dogs squeezed into the couple's 2011 Volkswagen Routan after Lawrence lost his job following an injury in August. The Hellers say the unfortunate situation left them with a difficult decision — use Liz's entire disability income on rent which would leave them nothing left over, or come up with a different plan.Las Vegas and Clark County routinely rank among the highest of per capita homeless in the country.Liz says the couple had been considering the purchase of an RV but the initial down payment was more than they could afford.Liz says moving to another apartment was not feasible due to rising rent costs which are now more than 0?on average per month in the Las Vegas valley. The Hellers began researching and found a variety of websites, discussion boards and YouTube videos that provide a wealth of information on the topic."After everything that had gone on, we opted for the van life," said Lawrence. The Hellers say the transition was rough at first."It looks like a typical so-called soccer mom van but in reality, behind those tinted windows, people are living," said Lawrence. The couple says they had to dramatically downsize which included giving away some family heirlooms. They are renting a storage unit, a mailbox that provides a physical address and re-homed their cats."We do not have an electric bill, we do not have rent," Liz said. "All we have is our car payment, car insurance, storage and our mailbox."The Hellers say the van life certainly comes with its disadvantage: public restrooms, truck stops for showers and not being able to cook. The couple says when it comes to surviving the elements, they keep their van running to keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.Liz and Lawrence say the "Van Life" is not permanent for them and some day they would like to save up enough money for an RV of their own.In the meantime, they say they do not qualify for many government programs or additional assistance because they do not have children. The Hellers say many programs, such as Section 8 housing vouchers, have long wait lists or are simply out of money."When people define the word homeless, people say 'well, you don't have a home to go to,' " said Lawrence. "That is correct, but at the same time, you kind of do." 2793

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office released the identities of the two men killed in a paragliding accident over the weekend. The ME identified the victims as 43-year-old Glenn Johnny Peter Bengtsson, of Carlsbad, and Raul Gonzalez Valerio, 61, of Laguna Hills.Questions still remain regarding the double fatal collision at Torrey Pines Gliderport on Saturday afternoon. The two certified pilots were flying their paragliders when they collided into each other, fell into a cliff, and died, authorities said.RELATED: 2 paragliders dead after colliding in mid-air, crashing into cliffMany who were at the Gliderport said Saturday's weather conditions were absolutely perfect, so they do not believe the incident was weather-related. While many people were flying, they said there were not enough people in the air at the time, so there wasn’t any aerial traffic jam. Both men were certified pilots, one with an advanced certification. They both were aware of the rules -- to keep a safe distance between each other, and that the glider along the ocean needs to make way for the one flying along the cliffs, who has the right-of-way. So what exactly happened? Many 10News spoke to said it must have been a freak accident. Now, the Torrey Pines Gliderport staff, San Diego police, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, and the Medical Examiner's Office are working to find answers. Gabriel Jebb with the Torrey Pines Gliderport issued 10News this statement: 1496

LACEY, Wash. — A man suspected of fatally shooting a supporter of a right-wing group in Portland, Oregon, last week was killed late Thursday as a fugitive task force tried to arrest him in Lacey, Washington.According to the U.S. Marshals Service, 48-year-old Michael Forest Reinoehl was killed as a federal task force attempted an arrest. He was wanted by Multnomah County (Oregon) Circuit Court on murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing 39-year-old Aaron "Jay" Danielson, a member of the right-wing group "Patriot Prayer," last Friday during clashing protests in Portland.According to the Marshals, a task force located Reinoehl in Olympia, Washington and attempted to take him into custody peacefully. The federal agents claim Reinoehl brandished a firearm during the encounter, and the Marshals returned with gunfire.Reinoehl was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the task force members were injured. On Thursday afternoon, Reinoehl told Vice News that he shot Danielson in self-defense on Saturday, believing that he and a friend were about to be stabbed."You know, lots of lawyers suggest that I shouldn't even be saying anything, but I feel it's important that the world at least gets a little bit of what's really going on," Reinoehl told Vice News. "I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn't going to do that."Portland has seen protests nightly for about 100 straight days, dating back to the Memorial Day weekend death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. While some demonstrations have been peaceful, a small area of downtown Portland has been marred by vandalism and violence for several straight months. Protesters have been calling for an end to police brutality and systemic racism in policing. The demonstrations have been a flashpoint in national politics, as President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that Portland Mayor Ted Wheelers and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown send in the National Guard and federal agents to quell the unrest. 2054
