EL CAJON (KGTV): It's become as much a back-to-school tradition as new pencils and notebooks; new buildings and construction at Grossmont Union High School District campuses."We're bringing everything up," says Mount Miguel Principal Jake Gaier. "These students will walk in the door and have access to things that we just haven't had access to before."His school is set to open a new Student Services Center, where state of the art facilities await students and parents as they register for class or meet with guidance counselors. They're also getting a new public events center and turning the old administration building into a STEM complex.The work at Mount Miguel is part of 9 million worth of upgrades that have been underway in the district since 2004. Since then, a trio of voter-approved bonds has helped GUHSD upgrade their aging campuses, some of which date back to the 1950s.In 2004, Proposition H gave the district 4 million. Proposition U in 2008 added another 7 million. And Measure BB in 2016 gave the district 8 million. To date, the district has spent 1 million of that money.Every school has benefited from the bonds, with some campuses getting work done on every single building.At Santana High School, a new PE building will open this spring. They also renovated STEM labs, giving their award-winning robotics program its own space, and adding an observation balcony for visitors to watch the kids work without disrupting them.Principal Tim Schwuchow requires that every student join an extracurricular activity. He says the new facilities reinforce the connection between academics and electives."The kids will really feel they're valued and their extracurricular activities are important to the school," he says.Granite Hills is also getting a new PE Building. It will be combined with a new Food Services building."We serve 700 meals a day," says Principal Mike Fowler. "The kitchen we use was built in 1960. It's too slow."Construction crews started pouring the concrete foundation earlier this month. Fowler says the new facility will be a game changer for his students, allowing the building to keep pace with changing curriculum.It can also be used in case of emergency as a community evacuation center.Those three schools have been the focus on construction this summer. Since may, Granite Hills has gotten .5 million in work done. Mount Miguel has received .7 million. Santana got .4. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- An El Cajon Police officer is recovering after being hit in the head with a hammer during a foot pursuit with a suspect. According to police, the incident happened near West Douglas Avenue and Van Houten Avenue. Police responded the scene after a suspect, later identified as Robert Dille, 30, reportedly shattered several windows at a Jack in the Box while trying to rob an armored truck making a delivery. Once they arrived, officers chased the suspect on foot. During the chase, Dille struck an officer in the head with a hammer after a Taser was ineffective. The officer was taken to the hospital before being treated and released.  711

(KGTV) - Surveillance video has recently captured multiple incidents of what appears to be a thief returning over and over to prey upon elderly residents of the Salvation Army apartment building in El Cajon.Apartment staff at the building on South Anza Street say there have been at least five robberies between October and Christmas Eve. Each appears to include the same thief."He's the lowest form of life in my book," building superintendent Alex Harmon told 10News. "To prey on the elderly. They've got walkers for crying out loud."In one incident captured on video, the man approached a 97-year-old woman taking a walk on the sidewalk outside the building. He was seen opening her bag, which was placed on her walker, then removing an item and walking away.The woman later told building staff that he had struck up a conversation about her walker and that she had offered him candy. She says he opened her bag and instead of taking candy, stole her wallet.In a separate incident, the suspected thief and what appears to be a lookout are seen carefully observing an elderly woman walking by. One man then turned and followed her around the corner. She told 10News that's when he raced up and grabbed her gold necklace, breaking off her gold cross, and running off.Multiple police reports have been filed with El Cajon Police Department, which is investigating. 1389

Efforts to build a House of Mexico in Balboa Park's International Cottage area are nearing a critical deadline for fundraising. The group needs to raise 0,000 by the end of the month, or they may have to abandon their plans."We've been on this journey for a long time," says House of Mexico President Sonia Ruiz.The City Council approved plans in 2016 to add 9 "houses" to the cottage area, representing Mexico, the Philippines, Peru, Panama, Korea, India, Palestine, Turkey and Lebanon. They'll share five new buildings. But cost estimates for construction have risen considerably since the approval.Ruiz says it looks like each House will need to pay about a half million dollars for their share of construction."We got the permits back in November," she says. "If we don't start construction within 180 days, we lose the permit."Ruiz adds that applying for a new construction permit would be time consuming and expensive.The House of Mexico was one of the original members of Balboa Park's House of Nations in 1935. But they left the group in 1941. Aside from one year, they didn't re-join until 2004.Since then, the House of Mexico has operated as a non-profit group. They've held numerous events at Balboa Park to showcase Mexican culture. But a physical building would help them expand their mission."We could offer Spanish classes, cooking classes, dance classes," Ruiz says. "We want to have rotating art and culture exhibits in the house."People around Balboa Park were surprised to learn that San Diego's closest international neighbor didn't have its own building among the houses."It's pretty astonishing," says Mark Levy, who walks through the park every day. "We should definitely build that before we put up a wall.""We're so close," says park visitor Pati Stives. "We're such a small world at the end of the day. We are neighbors; they should be here."The House of Mexico is trying to raise the money by the end of May. They have a button on their website for donations, and they're also selling bracelets that say "I Love Mexico" at events.
