NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — The man in charge of the FBI in Indianapolis said a school shooting at Noblesville Middle School West earlier this year could have been prevented.According to FBI Special Agent in Charge Grant Mendenhall, most school shootings are preventable, including the shooting at Noblesville. The difficulty is people reporting the concerns."They might not know exactly what the shooter is going to do, but in the vast majority of cases, somebody in retrospect had recognized some type of behavioral change that could have been significant and again, not a very high percentage of people reported it to law enforcement," Mendenhall said. The findings are all part of a new study released by the FBI that studied active shooter incidents over 13 years. The report states, in part:  822

NEW YORK, N.Y. – It’s been nearly a year since the death of Elijah McClain in Colorado, but as people across the U.S. learn of his case, more are calling for justice. In New York City, a beautiful vigil was held on Monday to honor the life of the 23-year-old man, who played violin.A crowd of musicians with string instruments gathered in Washington Square Park to play a variety of songs, like “Amazing Grace” and “We Shall Overcome.”In videos shot by Yuxi Liu, spectators with candles can be seen crowding the Washington Square Arch, where the musicians were playing.Liu says the vigil wasn’t organized like a formal event, but that’s part of what made it so special. He says there was no rehearsal and you can even see people running up late in his video.“However, that’s exact the reason why it’s beautiful,” said Liu. “People showed up only because people care. Me and bunch of other photographers showed up because we want to help document the moment.”Elijah McClain caseThere’s been renewed interest in the Elijah McClain case after nationwide protests put a spotlight on past instances of police use of force across the country.McClain died on Aug. 24, 2019, shortly after being arrested by officers with the Aurora Police Department.KMGH reports that McClain was walking home after purchasing iced tea at a convenience store when a bystander called 911 to report “a suspicious man wearing a ski mask and waving his arms.” Family says McClain wore the mask because he was anemic and got cold easily. When officers tracked McClain down, police say he began “resisting.” Body camera footage shows officers grab McClain almost immediately after attempting to stop him.As police struggled to detain McClain, an officer placed him in a "carotid hold" — a maneuver designed to limit blood flow to the brain. When McClain became unresponsive, paramedics administered a shot of ketamine "due to the level of physical force applied while restraining the subject and his agitated mental state."Police insist that paramedics were the ones who chose to administer ketamine. Paramedics say the procedure is common in the area.McClain later suffered a heart attack and died six days later. Now, the Colorado Attorney General’s Office is investigating whether criminal charges are warranted against anyone involved in McClain’s death.Click here for more on the McClain case. 2372

NEW YORK (AP) — From the earliest phases of the coronavirus pandemic, church services and other religious activities have been identified as sources of some local outbreaks. They have posed challenges in the U.S. for government leaders and health officials whose guidelines are sometimes challenged as encroachments on religious liberty. In the last two weeks alone, there have been two major church-government confrontations in California. First, San Francisco's city attorney sent a cease-and-desist order to the Roman Catholic archdiocese saying some churches had violated a ban on large indoor gatherings. A few days later, state officials temporarily banned singing and chanting at all indoor places of worship. 724

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- A Noblesville, Indiana woman says a trip to the spa with her daughters ended with a serious infection and a long stay at the hospital.Jennifer White said she got the pedicure nearly two weeks ago at “Nails and Lounge” in Noblesville.Over the next two days, White said she noticed her foot start swelling and turning purple and decided to go to the emergency room. She was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday with a severe infection and she’s been there for nearly a week.“I was worried I could possibly lose my toe. I could lose my foot,” said White. “I’m out of work … all for that 35 minutes of getting a pedicure.”White says the doctors tell her that the scrapings on her foot probably caused a small incision which allowed an infection to enter her foot.“I’m still here and they’re saying it’s due to the fact that I went to the nail salon… unclean, unsanitary and it’s made the infection settle in my foot,” said White.According to the Indiana Administrative Code, the use of razor devices to shave, reduce or remove calluses or corns is prohibited at spas in the state.Nails and Lounge’s manager says they did not use any prohibited devices and that they sanitize and dispose of all tools according to state law. She says they also bleach the pedicure tubs after each use, but have ordered plastic liners for each tub because of this experience. The spa manager denies that their pedicure caused the infection but says they are open to working with White to pay for her medical bills.  1525

Nintendo, the Japanese company behind Super Mario and Pokemon video games, reported Thursday that its fiscal first half profit more than tripled as passed time while stuck at home during the pandemic playing games.Kyoto-based Nintendo Co.’s profit for the six months through September soared to 213 billion yen ( billion), up from 62 billion yen a year ago. Six-month sales soared to 769 billion yen (.4 billion) from 444 billion yen.Nintendo said more than 5 million units of “Super Mario 3D All-Stars” game software for the Nintendo Switch were sold during the period, and nearly 3 million units of “Paper Mario: The Origami King” were sold.Earlier releases also continued to sell briskly, including “Animal Crossing: New Horizons,” which has now sold a cumulative 26 million units globally, according to Nintendo.Nintendo’s online downloads and mobile sales also did well, it said.Nintendo said it expects the positive results to continue. The latest in its other hit game lineup, such as “Pikmin 3 Deluxe,” will go on sale this year, it said.Nintendo raised its full year profit forecast through March to 300 billion yen (.9 billion), up from an earlier projection of a 200 billion yen (.9 billion) profit. The latest forecast, if realized, would mark a 16% improvement from 259 billion yen in profit recorded in the previous fiscal year.Although rising COVID-19 cases have hurt large chunks of the global economy, including Japan’s, some sectors, such as online retailing and at-home entertainment, are booming.___Yuri Kageyama is on Twitter https://twitter.com/yurikageyama 1595
