The battle over MCAS flight paths continues. For years, residents have expressed concerns about noise, pollution and potential crashes. Earlier this month, councilwoman Barbara Bry wrote a letter to MCAS asking pilots ot adhere to flight corridors that avoid direct traffic over University City. Neighbors in the area are still coping from the 2008 crash that killed four people when a jet went spiraling into two homes. "We’ve already had one accident in UC years ago," said Don Hoetz. "Right below that flight path and we just don’t want to see that happen again."MCAS released a statement to 10news, saying in part;"All aircraft routes, including departures over University City, depend on a myriad offactors including weather, other air traffic, and the flight characteristics of the aircraft. In all cases, aircraft use navigable airspace in a manner authorized by the FAA."Colonel Charles Dockery responded to councilwoman Bry's letter Thursday morning. Just ask Jen Latham.“The Basque country, which is that region kind of in between France and Spain, has an amazing tradition of this exact style of bread, like that very crusty, very wet, very open crumb bread. And during the gold rush and just after the gold rush, there was this huge influx of Basque people to the to this area. They brought that tradition of bread here,” said Latham.Latham is the head of Bread at Tartine Bakery in San Francisco.Ever since San Francisco boomed in the mid 1800’s with the gold rush, the city has been a haven for the sour bakers. The tradition is alive and well at Tartine.What makes sourdough different than other bread? It’s this little thing called a starter.“It’s a paste of flour and water that’s inoculated with the right balance of yeast and bacteria to raise dough,” said Latham.Yup just mix a little flour and water and let it collect the natural bacteria in the air and you too can have your very own sourdough starter. And since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic people have.People at home have been making, feeding, and nurturing their own starter at home.“Hopped on the bandwagon during COVID, just like millions of people probably did. Kind of found some blogs and started from there but it’s been going since like April,” said TC Jamison, a home baker.Jamison started his starter six month ago when the lockdowns were in full swing. He’s been baking and feeding it ever since.“You’re dealing with something that’s alive, so it’s going to be different every time,” said Jamison.Yup, feeding it fresh flour and water every day, for six months. It’s a lot of work.“The starter has been going, the one that we use now for well over 20 years,” Latham explained.So Jamison has a little ways to go. Some bakeries in San Francisco have had an ongoing starter for more than 150 years.But Jamison has a pretty special goal for his starter."My daughter was born in June. I was pretty hell bent on keeping the starter going before she was born and then afterwards. So now I can always say, that’s been around since before you were born,” he said. That will go down in the dad joke hall of fame.At Tartine, they’ll continue to shape, fold, and flour their way into the fabric of San Francisco sourdough history.“You’re never done learning about bread. There’s always more to learn. There’s always things you can change, there’s infinite variables. The flour and the weather and you’re fermentation management, timing, temperature. But two crafty teachers turned to their communities to help offset the cost of the supplies. Jennifer Boyle-Taurman had several boxes of school supplies to unpack for this school year. But they weren't supplied by her school nor purchased from her own pocket. Surveillance video captured a woman red-handed, with her hand in a donation box at a 7 - Eleven in Melvindale, Michigan.However, she wasn’t putting in her two cents.  The images have some people outraged and giving the lady a piece of their minds. The video shows the woman standing at the counter. It appears when the coast was clear, she made her move.According to the video, she grabbed the donation box meant for the Dearborn Animal Shelter and people with Friends For Animals of Metro Detroit.The staff and volunteers help cats and dogs every step of the way. The donations are used for medical care, food, shelter and anything the animals need in order to help them get adopted.Now it’s gone. “There’s about 40 dollars in there coins and bills”, said 7-Eleven employee Michelle Roberson.“Robbing alone is disturbing, but from a charity that only helps people!,"  said David Wayman, who also works at the store. The shelter and the non-profit both need the support, said  Katie Johnson, Director of Operations with Friends of Animals of Metro Detroit.“We are a non-profit, we take in 2,500 animals a year and we rely on the generosity and support of wonderful donors," Johnson said. "We just put an appeal out there to say, whoever took it, please return it because it will really help us save a little furry life." If you would like to help them recoup some of the money that was lost when the donation box was stolen, you can make a donation at www.metrodetroitanimals.org. 1603
