SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SDG&E announced Fire Safe 3.0 innovations to advance wildfire safety at its headquarters in Kearny Mesa Tuesday.It's the power company's plan to use more advanced technologies to improve wildfire safety. Instead of using weather data updated every 10 minutes, they utilize data updated every 30 seconds instead. SDG&E's chief meteorologist explained they're using artificial intelligence-based models that make weather data more accurate and they're monitoring more than 500,000 trees in the area using a "Vegetation Risk Index."It helps determine how those trees might impact power lines or become fuel for fires. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some places of worship around San Diego County appear to be planning to continue holding services on their property despite the state’s order regarding indoor operations.On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced pandemic-related restrictions for certain businesses and activities, and places of worship were included on California’s list.Via a Wednesday evening livestream, Kearny Mesa-based Awaken Church broadcasted their service in which there were people in attendance. On their website, Awaken Church promoted in-person women’s prayer meetings held at each of their campuses.ABC 10News asked church leaders to clarify the meeting, and an Awaken pastor said they were holding a prayer protest.At the church’s Balboa Avenue campus, a disclaimer is posted on doors that reads, in part: “By entering this building where COVID-19 virus may possibly exist, despite efforts and attempts at utilizing and employing CDC Public Health Guidelines, you take full responsibility for the decision to attend our services and activities.”A viewer brought a Facebook post by Lighthouse Baptist Church to ABC 10News’ attention. In the post, the Lemon Grove church says, in part: “We are aware of the current mandates of our Governor and County. But, by God’s grace will continue with their current schedule of live worship services on the property.”It’s unclear whether those services will be inside or outside.ABC 10News reached out to both churches for further comment, but neither have returned calls as of late Thursday morning.A woman who asked not to be identified told ABC 10News that her church also invited her back. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is warning students that they will need to be re-vaccinated against meningitis after Walgreens gave out shots at non-optimal temperature.According to The Daily Aztec, Walgreens recently discovered that the meningococcus B vaccines, given to 350 students on October 5 and 8, weren’t given at the right temperature.The company says its reaching out to students who received them. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo Global is stepping up efforts to protect the koala population as hundreds of massive wildfires scorch Australia.The organization said Wednesday it's committing resources to ensure the koala population is recovered. San Diego Zoo Global-backed researchers are preparing to journey to the Blue Mountains region of Australia to look for koalas and provide recovery assistance.Koala's in the Blue Mountain region of the country are the most genetically diverse koalas in the world, according to San Diego Zoo Global.RELATED: UCSD Health, San Diego Zoo Safari Park team up to save gorilla's eyesight"We have been working in this area for many years now, tracking koalas to learn about them and to assess their population numbers," said Kellie Leigh, researcher with San Diego Zoo Global. "The population of koalas in the Blue Mountains have high levels of genetic diversity. This makes this particular population very important for the survival of the species."Researchers utilize a special radio-tagging technique to track koalas in the tall trees and rugged terrain of the region. Thanks to that tracking, they were able to locate 12 koalas threatened by the wildfires and relocate them to Australia's Taronga Zoo.As researchers prepare to head back into the region, they say the devastation will require them to plan for immediate relief and long-term sustainability for the threatened population.RELATED: Here's how you can help the victims of the Australian wildfires"These fires are completely changing how wildlife management will be carried out in future in Australia," Leigh said. "In the short term, we will be engaging in search and rescue for wildlife that needs assistance, and putting in water sources for the wildlife that have been left behind. One expert estimates the wildfires have killed more than 1 billion animals. "We know that Australian biodiversity has been going down over the last several decades, and it's probably fairly well known that Australia's got the world's highest rate of extinction for mammals. It's events like this that may well hasten the extinction process for a range of other species. So, it's a very sad time," Chris Dickman, a professor at the University of Sydney, says. "What we're seeing are the effects of climate change. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Small businesses that take the government up on its low-interest loan proposal may not end up paying any of the money back under certain circumstances. As part of the Coronavirus economic stimulus bill in Congress, the Federal Government would make available upwards of 0 billion in low-interest loans of 2.75 to 3.75 percent for many businesses under 500 workers. The loans would help employers who are suffering amid the economic shutdown stay afloat in the short term. Additionally, for businesses that maintain payroll or meet certain hiring requirements, the government may forgive the loan entirely. "This could be a vital safety net for many of these companies that might close, and for their employees who might not have any other source of income during this painful period," said Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University. Small businesses and workers in San Diego have been hit hard amid the outbreak. The San Diego Workforce Partnership estimates 350,000 employees could be laid off, many from service sector jobs that don't have the option to work at home. Those jobs are largely in retail, accomodation, and restaurants.At The French Gourmet in Pacific Beach, owner Michel Malecot says sales are down 90 percent and that the restaurant and its catering business have lost 0,000.
