Heading into the pandemic, 16 million US workers were employed by the restaurant industry, making it one of the largest industries in America.With the coronavirus still spreading throughout the US, whether it’s safe to visit a restaurant remains a question on the minds of many. For many Americans, they’re not quite sold on restaurants being safe despite most restaurants taking measures to protect staff and customers.ValuePenguin, which is associated with Lending Tree, conducted a survey of 1,000 Americans. The survey found that 44% of Americans feel indoor restaurants are unsafe to visit amid a pandemic, compared to 40% who believe they are safe. Women were more likely to say indoor dining is unsafe compared to men.More consumers, however, say getting takeout and dining outdoors is safe. Nearly 67% of respondents felt it’s safe to get takeout, and 58% said eating outdoors is safe.What do experts say?Many experts have said even with the precautions restaurants are taking, there is still a sizeable risk of catching the virus while dining inside. These risks, however, are generally significantly lower for those dining outside.Last month in an interview with MSNBC, Dr. Anthony Fauci pointed toward restaurants being among riskiest places to visit amid the pandemic. Fauci added that bars and gyms also are considered risky in his view.“When you have restaurants indoors in a situation where you have a high degree of infection in the community [and] you're not wearing masks, that's a problem,” Dr. Fauci said.Fauci pointed toward a September 2020 CDC study that found those who visited restaurants in the previous two weeks were two times more likely to test positive for the coronavirus than those who said they had not been inside a restaurant.“Reports of exposures in restaurants have been linked to air circulation,” the CDC said. “Direction, ventilation, and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission, even if social distancing measures and mask use are implemented according to current guidance. Masks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking, whereas shopping and numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use.”Economic impact to restaurantsWith many restaurants forced to close indoor operations during the spring, and scale back indoor capacity during the summer, millions were out of work. According to the National Restaurant Association, 8 million restaurant workers, representing nearly half of the industry, were without jobs during the height of the pandemic. There remained over 2 million out-of-work restaurant employees as of the start of October.As of Wednesday, 100,000 restaurants have either closed for good, or for a significant period of time. As a whole, the restaurant industry is expected to lose 0 billion by the end of 2020.In hopes of minimizing spread and regaining customer confidence, the CDC and industry leaders have implemented cleaning procedures. They hope as cases begin to swell again for the cold-weather season, restaurants can remain open amid the pandemic. 3062

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s highest court has thrown out a lower court’s order preventing the state from certifying dozens of contests on its Nov. 3 election ballot. At issue is the latest lawsuit filed by Republicans attempting to thwart President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. In a unanimous decision Saturday night, the state Supreme Court threw out a judge's recent order to halt certification of any remaining contests. The justices say the underlying lawsuit was filed months too late. The Republican plaintiffs had sought to either throw out the 2.5 million mail-in ballots submitted under the law or direct the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature to pick Pennsylvania’s presidential electors. 721

Dr. New says those side effects would then be temporary.   "It could cause acid reflux symptoms and certainly exacerbate gas and bloating-like symptoms, which is uncomfortable as well," the doctor says.However, if you're someone who makes these apart of your everyday wardrobe, the long-term effects are dangerous.  "Where is acid reflux in a very, very small number of patients could contribute to inflammation scar tissue inflammation or narrowing of the esophagus," Dr. New explains.So, if you plan to wear shapewear under your holiday dresses this season, or really any day, Dr. New says to limit the time you’re in them and make sure they aren't digging into you.    1132

Career experts say if you think about your soft skills and what you value you offer a company, you’ll have a leg up.As we all continue to work from home, LinkedIn career expert Blair Heitmann says jobs in the remote sector are hot.Remote jobs are in demand, Heitmann said. “I mean we are seeing an uptick of remote jobs across LinkedIn. You don’t necessarily have to be in the same city to find those opportunities as well."Because of the pandemic, many jobs aren’t available. Heitmann said applicants should try and focus on what jobs are available in a similar sector.“Try to think through how to transfer to a role that would be a stepping stone for you to get there,” Heitmann said. “It might not be your dream job out of the gate, but it would help you gain the skills you need to get towards that eventually.”Employers right now are also focused on soft skills.Teamwork, communication, problem-solving, those are all examples of soft skills, Heitmann said. Health officials in Wisconsin are warning against eating a traditional holiday dish called "cannibal sandwiches."According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the dish is raw, lean ground beef served on bread with sliced onions, salt and pepper. It's also sometimes known as "tiger meat" or "steak tartare.""Many Wisconsin families consider them to be a holiday tradition, but eating them poses a threat for Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, Campylobacter and Listeria bacteria that can make you sick," said the Wisconsin Department of Health Services in a Facebook post on Saturday.The department added that ground beef should "ALWAYS" be cooked to an internal temperature of 160° F and that it doesn't matter where you buy the meat, it's still risky.There have been eight outbreaks linked to eating a raw ground beef dish, including one large Salmonella outbreak that involved more than 150 people in Dec. 1994, according to the health department.For more information, click here.This story was originally published by staff at WTMJ. 1039
