SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rent isn't the only thing in San Diego on the rise - so are the costs and fees associated with it. A recent study from HotPads, a Zillow-owned site, says San Diegans can pay ,270 per year in overlooked costs and fees that come with moving. The includes security and pet deposits, pet rent and parking. The biggest chunk comes from the security deposit, which is typically one month's rent. In all, it works out to an additional 6 per month. "As rent prices continue to rise and rent affordability remains a concern, it is important for renters to consider all their potential expenses before planning a move," said Joshua Clark, economist at HotPads. "There's all kinds of things they might charge you for at move-in, so you want to be sure to check before you sign anything," she said. Steingrebe focuses largely on downtown, renting out privately owned condos. She says some buildings even require tenants hire move-in coordinators to make sure things go smoothly and not disturb other residents. Renters don't pay the HOA directly, but landlord's can pass along any sort of fines or violations they commit. "Unauthorized moves, these buildings downtown, you can't just walk in with your couch, you have to schedule it," Steingrebe said, adding dumping trash inappropriately can also lead to fines. The biggest financial issues that arise for renters come at the end of a lease, when it comes to getting a security deposit refunded, Steingrebe said. She said the best defense is to document with photos and text any damage or issues that occur throughout the year, starting with an initial move-in inspection. She said it's typical for landlords to deduct for carpet cleaning at the end of the lease. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County and other cities are trying to give businesses and places of worship more options that would allow them to expand into nearby parks, and while some are taking the help, others are finding alternative ways to stay open.Last weekend, in Encinitas, a massive church gathering was organized, with photos of the event posted on social media.At the gathering at Cardiff State Beach, crowds of people were seen singing, praying, and cheering. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has identified a park-and-ride lot in Scripps Ranch as a perfect place for new affordable housing, but neighboring businesses worry the plan will drive away their customers."You solve one problem and create ten new ones. There’s seven businesses that are going to suffer," said Yannis Pihas, owner of Yanni's Bar & Grill.Pihas says his customers, as well as visitors to the two hotels in the center, frequently use the park-and-ride because there is limited parking otherwise. While he's attempted to speak with city leaders about his concerns, so far he says he has not been given any indication that the housing project will include parking that the businesses can use.ABC 10News reached out to the city. A spokesperson says the project is still in the early process of planning and that details on potential parking have yet to be worked out. The spokesperson also said the public can always bring concerns to the area's planning board and that there will be more opportunities for public input once the plan is prepared.In a statement, Mayor Faulconer said, "There is a great need in our community for housing that gives folks a real chance to have a place of their own, but also the support system they need to stay housed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego area fire agencies are boosting staffing levels ahead of what may be the worst Santa Ana wind event this year. The intense weather situation, due to start Tuesday night and last through Thursday, has crews working extra shifts. Cal Fire San Diego has nearly all of its 500 firefighters on duty to staff equipment and fill support roles, an agency spokesperson said on behalf of Chief Tony Mecham. Cal Fire also brought 150 out-of-state fire engines to California. San Diego County has an additional 15 fire engines, five patrols, six water tenders, and support elements including a Cal Fire communications unit. The California Office of Emergency Services also announced Tuesday it was coordinating to pre-position fire equipment and personnel ahead of Santa Ana conditions. Two strike teams consisting of five engines are staged in San Diego County, along with a helicopter. The San Diego Fire-Rescue department said staffing would be increased Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. due to the wind event.Two firefighting helicopters are available around the clock, according to spokesperson Mónica Mu?oz. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County officials say they are no longer accepting waiver applications from elementary schools looking to reopen for in-person learning.The county’s COVID-19 Education Sector Team made the announcement Tuesday, stating:“This decision is based on the fact that as of September 1, 2020, all TK-12 schools within San Diego County would be permitted to reopen for in-person instruction, if the county’s case rate remains below 100 per 100,000 population for 14 days after coming off the State’s Monitoring List. Today is day 7 of this 14-day period, therefore in one week, all TK-12 schools could be allowed to open for in-person instruction, if the school leadership chooses to do so. Therefore, our application waiver process will be suspended.”The suspension is effective immediately.As of Aug. 20, there were 27 local schools that were approved for waivers. 893
