The declaration on Tuesday leaves Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan as the only countries thought to still have the wild poliovirus. "Today we are also celebrating another public health triumph: the eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa," said Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus with the World Health Organization. "This is an incredible achievement, and a much-needed cause for celebration."The World Health Organization says this is just the second time a virus has been eradicated in Africa, after smallpox four decades ago. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — A family-owned Mexican restaurant in La Jolla that was a local favorite for 52 years has officially closed its doors.On Monday, crews began clearing out Su Casa Mexican restaurant on La Jolla Blvd. The restaurant, known for its margaritas and fresh guacamole prepared at the table, opened in 1967."I feel like I'm losing a lot of my own history. It's really sad," said longtime customer Eric Lind.Lind estimated that he and his family ate at Su Casa roughly 200 times since the 1970s."It was just the food, the hospitality, and the ambiance. Everything about it, the whole package, it was just special," he said.On Facebook, dozens of customers posted farewells and memories. "My now-husband of nearly 25 years asked me to marry him after dinner at Su Casa on June 17, 1994. You're part of our story," one woman wrote.A note posted on the door of the Spanish-style building said after more than half a century, the owner and the restaurant "are ready to retire." The owner told the La Jolla Light he was seeking a buyer for the property. (AP) — Searchers have found a hiker who has been missing in the mountains north of Los Angeles for a week.Authorities say 73-year-old Eugene Jo was found alive Saturday by one of 11 search-and-rescue crews that have been searching the San Gabriel Mountains for him.Sgt. Greg Taylor with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department says cellphone coverage is spotty in the mountains, so he has no immediate word on Jo's condition. He says Jo was being transported to a hospital to be examined.Jo was hiking with a group to the 8,000-foot (2,438-meter) summit of Mount Waterman on June 22 when he became separated from them.Taylor said more than 70 people have been searching for him in the mountains. 728

Jurors have found Border Patrol Agent Lonnie Swartz not guilty on the Second Degree Murder charge of shooting through the border fence and killing 16-year-old Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez.Jurors could not come to an agreement on a verdict on the two lesser charges, voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter.If they wish, prosecutors can retry Swartz on the lesser charges only.Friday jurors told Federal Judge Raner Collins they could not agree on a verdict.  The judge told them to continue deliberating. They could choose to convict Swartz on lesser charges of Voluntary Manslaughter or Involuntary Manslaughter.Swartz testified he was protecting himself and other officers from rocks thrown over the border fence by people on the Mexican side trying to interfere with efforts to arrests smugglers who were trying to climb over the fence and into Mexico.In closing statements to the jury, prosecutors said in his two years as a Border Patrol Agent, Swartz had rocks thrown at him six or seven times, and each time had responded by using less lethal weapons. Border Patrol may use items like guns that shoot an irritating pepper.But the night of October 10, 2012, Swartz had been on duty at the DeConcini Port of Entry.  He had only his gun and used it to fire 16 rounds through the fence. Ten shots hit the 16-year-old Mexican teen.Prosecutors say the threat against Swartz and other officers was not severe enough to justify deadly force and that they could have easily removed any threat by taking cover.They say other agents took cover but Swartz was fed up with rockings, wanted to send a message, and did it by calmly walking to the border fence, taking careful aim, and firing 16 shots into Mexico.Defense attorney Sean Chapman told the jury rocks are enough of a danger to justify deadly force and that there is no evidence to conclude Swartz fired out of anger over rock attacks.
