As the debate about mask mandates continues in some states, a new study reportedly shows social distancing is just as important to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The study looked at the effectiveness of face coverings when someone coughs repeatedly, coughing is one of the symptoms of COVID-19.The study was published in a June issue of “Physics of Fluid”, by AIP Publishing, and was conducted by Talib Dbouk and Dimitris Drikakis from the University of Nicosia in Cyprus.The researchers used computer modeling to show the range of saliva droplets when people cough. Previous work from this group showed saliva can travel about 18 feet when a person coughs and is not wearing a mask or covering their mouth.This new study built on that research to add in the variables of face coverings and repeated coughing. They used information available about filters used in surgical masks. 887

At a contentious meeting on Monday, the Department of Justice's antitrust chief gave AT&T a choice: to get your purchase of Time Warner done, either sell off CNN's parent unit or DirecTV, or we'll see you in court.The government is holding up AT&T's pending acquisition of Time Warner, stirring speculation that the Trump administration is trying to retaliate against CNN for its coverage of the president.According to two sources with knowledge of the meeting, the DOJ is demanding that AT&T divest all of Turner, the unit of Time Warner that includes CNN as well as TNT and TBS."Threatening Turner is a fig leaf for threatening CNN," one of the sources said.AT&T is said to be reluctant to sell assets, especially Turner, which represents a significant portion of Time Warner's profits.Earlier on Wednesday AT&T said the timing of the deal's closing is now "uncertain.""We are in active discussions with the DOJ," John J. Stephens, chief financial officer for AT&T, said at a Wells Fargo conference.The stock of Time Warner, which owns CNN, fell more than 6.5% by Wednesday afternoon. AT&T was flat.The New York Times and the Financial Times also reported Wednesday afternoon that the DOJ was demanding the sale of CNN or Turner as a condition of approving the deal.The wireless giant previously said that it expected the acquisition to take effect by the end of this year. Stephens' comments effectively confirmed last week's Wall Street Journal report that the government is "actively considering" an antitrust lawsuit to block the impending acquisition.While the Justice Department declined to comment, sources had told the Journal that the department will sue if it can't reach an agreement on so-called "conditions" that are attached to the deal.The Journal story was an unwelcome surprise for AT&T executives. Video showed Blake walking into a car when he was shot from behind. As many key details from Sunday’s incident are still not confirmed, Kenosha Police announced that two of the officers involved have been placed on leave.The incident prompted further unrest in a number of US cities on Monday, calling for justice. Supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement also are calling for the arrest of the officers involved in Blake’s shooting.Meanwhile, Republicans tried to pin the unrest and protests that turned violent on Democrats during Monday's portion of the Republican National Convention. The unrest ramped up following the death of George Floyd on Memorial Day. While most of the largest US cities are run by Democrats, unrest has also played out in large cities run by Republicans, including Fort Worth and Jacksonville.To illustrate their point, Republicans called on St. Louis attorneys Mark and Patricia McCloskey, who were criminally charged after video shared on social media indicated that the McCloskeys pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters in their gated community."Whether it's the defunding of police, ending cash bails so criminals can be released back out on the streets the same day to riot again, or encouraging anarchy and chaos on our streets, it seems as if the Democrats no longer view the government's job as protecting honest citizens from criminals, but rather protecting criminals from honest citizens,” Mark McCloskey said. “Not a single person in the out of control mob you saw at our house was charged with a crime. BALTIMORE — It's not just the news of a Free Little Library being vandalized that is turning heads in a Baltimore community. The narration of the crime itself is worth its weight in laughter."I thought it was hilarious when I sped it up and cut it," said Jacqui Cummings. "I said to myself, 'you don't need to fight over it, just make a joke of it.'"The initial vandalism happened on November 7th around 8 p.m. outside Notre Maison Connects. The non-profit focuses on empowering youth while supporting families and strengthening communities.Cummings is the founder of the organization. She said when she first saw the damage, she shed a tear."I did because I do a lot of work myself," she said.Cummings is no stranger to hands-on-work. Not only did she do metal-work to create the Free Little Library, she's experienced in hard labor, helping build day-care centers in other countries."I love giving back and educating," she said.In light of the vandalism Cummings launched a community book drive. As the NBA plans to resume action at the end of the month, the bubble the league has implemented in Orlando, Florida, appears to be working.On Monday, the league said that its latest round of tests netted no new confirmed coronavirus cases.The league has implemented a “bubble” for its players, meaning players are being confined to a hotel complex as Florida is grappling with a spike in recent weeks of COVID-19 cases. The complex also contains practice gyms for the players to workout.At the end of June, before players entered the “bubble,” the league found 16 coronavirus cases out of over 300 tested.The NBA is moving forward with a planned relaunch on July 30, with 22 teams of the league’s 30 teams participating in the conclusion of the season and subsequent postseason based at Orlando’s Wide World of Sports.
