SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The cycle of debt is something a lot of people are desperate to break. One of the biggest challenges is keeping up with credit cards, payments and beating the interest rates. Now, a San Diego startup is offering people an opportunity to make purchases on items they may need for themselves or their families, without interest rates, credit checks, or penalties. Marc Schneider is the CEO of Zebit, an online shopping site designed to help people facing financial hardships, get on track, make payments and get what they need. “We’re trying to provide sort of an Amazon for the under-served,” said Schneider. I grew up in a mobile home with a separated family. Ended up being homeless on food stamps,” said Schneider. Now, Schneider is a successful entrepreneur, with Zebit hitting million in 2017, and million last year. “Zebit was built to change how consumers get access to credit, to give them a fair deal and have zero gotchas,” Schneider said. In order to make purchases on Zebit, you first need to create a profile which includes providing your current employment status and driver’s license. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The helicopter pilot who died when his aircraft crashed in Central California while fighting a wildfire on Wednesday was a former ABC 10News pilot.Michael John Fournier, 52, of Rancho Cucamonga, died when his Bell UH-1H helicopter crashed during a water-dropping mission about 10 miles south of Coalinga, Calif. Fournier was the only person on board, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office (FSO).Investigators were called out to the scene at about 11 a.m., but were not able to make it to the crash site until about 8 p.m. due to the rugged terrain and intense conditions. Once they reached the site, FSO said crews draped an American flag over Fournier's body and carried his body out of the site."One, he was on the front lines helping in an emergency. Two, we did not know if he was former military or law enforcement. We felt it was just the appropriate thing to do," FSO wrote on Facebook.Fournier leaves behind a wife and two daughters. A GoFundMe has been posted here to assist his family with expenses.Fournier was working with Fillmore-based Guardian Helicopters at the time of the crash, according to the Associated Press. Recently, he had flown as part of repair work for Southern California Edison. In the mid to late 1990s, Fournier was a contracted backup pilot for ABC 10News in San Diego for about two years, said Kyle Anastasio. He’s known Fournier for nearly 28 years. He says Fournier was trying to break into the flying industry when they met.Anastasio was the primary Sky10 pilot and taught Fournier how to fly the news chopper.“He was a good pilot,” Anastasio said. “That’s why it’s so devastating.”Anastasio says Fournier went on to have a great career in flying.“He took this whole flying helicopters thing to the moon with all the companies he went to, flew utility work and medevac. He was very well known in the industry,” Anastasio said.He said Fournier loved two things in life: his family and flying.“Mike was a rock-solid individual, a lot of people are missing him right now,” Anastasio said.Timothy Gaughen, a former ABC 10News photojournalist, said working beside Fournier was one of the high points in his career."Fast, efficient, fun, it was always great. It was always enjoyable," Gaughen said. "There's certain people you remember from your career. I still remember it as if it was yesterday ... Just a pleasant, pleasant personality."Gaughen said when it was time to get in the air, Fournier was an absolute professional."He was just a down to Earth person ... but when it was time to get the shot, boom, we were a two-man team," Gaughen said.San Diego is no stranger to wildfires and Fournier worked his share of capturing images from above while at ABC 10News, Gaughen says. He adds that Fournier was a safety-conscious man who loved what he did. "There's something in helicopter pilots, they live and breathe being in the air. He died doing what he loved. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Department of Defense has awarded a San Diego biotech company up to million to help develop a next-generation drug to fight COVID-19.Sorrento Therapeutics calls the drug a “rapid countermeasure” against the disease, one that might serve as a vaccine substitute in certain populations or a critical stopgap tool if the virus mutates.“With this, we have a new platform potentially that can respond very quickly to any type of emerging threat,” said CEO Dr. Henry Ji.Sorrento is trying to become the first company to develop an approved DNA-encoded monoclonal antibody treatment. The approach is similar to the experimental monoclonal antibody treatment used on President Trump, but Sorrento’s concept is a more advanced version that offers several benefits.Sorrento’s drug is designed to be used as either a treatment in infected patients or a fast-forming layer of defense in healthy people. The company said its solution should be cheaper and easier to deploy than existing monoclonal antibodies, while offering vaccine-like protective effects that last for several months rather than just two or three weeks.Antibodies are one of the body’s key defense mechanisms. They seek out pathogens and bind to them, marking the invader for destruction like ground troops marking an enemy base for an airstrike. In some cases, antibodies can even neutralize an invader themselves by blocking its method of entry into cells.Monoclonal antibodies are antibodies designed by scientists to neutralize a pathogen. They are hand-picked, genetically modified super antibodies that are cloned in labs.However, the process of growing these super soldiers in the lab is difficult, transporting them requires a cold chain, and as a result, monoclonal antibodies are among the most expensive drugs in the world.Instead of giving people an infusion of pre-made antibodies, Sorrento’s idea is to give people a shot of DNA that instructs some of their cells to churn out perfectly pre-designed antibodies.“It's much easier to make enough DNA to treat a large number of people than it is to make enough protein to treat a large number of people. That’s just a fact about manufacturing,” said Dr. Robert Allen, Sorrento’s chief scientific officer on the project.Dr. Allen said the company is hopeful the drug will induce cells to make protective antibodies for six months or more.This DNA approach to an antibody treatment has never been approved for any disease but other companies are working on their own versions of it. Another biotech with ties to San Diego, Inovio Pharmaceuticals, became the first company to test this approach in humans in 2019 for a drug targeting the Zika virus.Sorrento’s approach is similar to the way DNA vaccines work, but it cuts out intermediary steps and jumpstarts the production of antibodies, rather than leaving the production of antibodies up to the body’s immune system. The result is that protective antibodies can start circulating in days after injection rather than weeks, the company said.“What this is capable of doing is it bypasses the need for the immune system,” said Dr. Mark Brunswick, Sorrento’s senior vice president for regulatory affairs.The drug is unlikely to replace a vaccine in most situations because vaccines can produce other defense mechanisms like T-cells that work in conjunction with antibodies. But the drug might work better than a vaccine for the elderly and others with weakened immune systems who are unable to produce a robust number of antibodies on their own, Brunswick said.Still, the company still has a lot of pre-clinical work and testing to go. Sorrento is hoping to have the drug ready for human trials in four to six months.By then, vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna will likely be widely available, but Dr. Ji said the world needs to prepare for the possibility this virus will mutate.“When you vaccinate hundreds of millions, potentially billions of people, the virus is under tremendous evolution pressure,” he said. “It will escape. It’s guaranteed that the virus is going to mutate and escape all of the vaccines we’re trying to create.”If it does, he said Sorrento will be ready to rapidly deploy its DNA-based countermeasure. 4223

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a YouTube star who drove his McLaren the wrong way on the 805 last year, killing a mom and her daughter, are suing the City of San Diego, County of San Diego, and the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT).The lawsuit claims the “horrific and tragic event” was entirely preventable.Eighteen-year-old Trevor Heitmann, known as McSkillet, drove his McLaren the wrong way on the freeway in August 2018, killing Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana. The sports car collided with the family's SUV, which burst into flames.RELATED: Autopsy details mental state of McSkillet before deadly crash on Interstate 805 in San DiegoIn the lawsuit Heitmann's family claims "SDPD was warned by Plaintiff's on the day of, but before his death, that Trevor intended to drive his McLaren at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction on a public roadway, under the delusion that he (Trevor) could drive through vehicles traveling in the opposite direction without incident."Worried about their sons' dangerous intentions and fearing for his well-being, as well as the safety of others, Dr. Mary Rusher, a board-certified psychiatrist, called 911 and made a 5150 request for a psychiatric hold, the lawsuit alleges.The lawsuit claims, "Defendants' purported PERT response team conducted either or both no assessment or the wrong assessment of the mental health status of Plaintiffs' son Trevor, pursuant to and under California Welfare and Institutions Code 5150."RELATED: YouTuber's parents requested psychiatric evaluation before deadly I-805 crashIt alleges, defendants also failed and refused requests to take Heitmann into protective detention to transport him to a designated evaluation and treatment facility."As a consequence, and despite Plaintiffs' attempts to ensure their son's safety and the safety of others by blocking the driveway of their residents, Trevor later that day left his residence and drive the McLaren to the Interstate 805 Freeway where he was killed in the beforementioned collision, which also tragically took the lives of the Pizarros."A spokesman for the County of San Diego told 10News they couldn't comment.RELATED: Son remembers mother and sister after release of driver's autopsy in deadly 805 crashAs of this writing, officials with the City of San Diego and PERT have not responded to 10News requests for comment.This is the third lawsuit filed regarding the 2018 crash.
