It's not the kind of showcase political parties traditionally host during an election year. But the Democratic National Convention begins a week of speeches and virtual events tonight, kicking off the home stretch of a very unusual presidential campaign. From virtual setups across the country this week, the Democrats will nominate and celebrate their 2020 ticket — former Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris. The opening night theme, "We The People," will lead into an overall unity theme for the Democrats this week.Sen. Bernie Sanders, who battled Biden from the progressive flank during the primary cycle, is among Monday's headliners. He's scheduled to take the podium beginning at 10 p.m. ET.Also appearing Monday is John Kasich, a Republican and former governor or Ohio. He ran for president during the 2016 cycle. Finally, former First Lady Michelle Obama will take the stage on Monday. Her speech at the 2016 DNC included one of the week's standout quotes: "Our motto is, 'When they go low, we go high.'"Since Harris joined Biden on the ticket, they've coalesced around certain themes, including the former vice president's ongoing call that 2020 is a battle for the "soul of the nation."But at the campaign's core now is trying to persuade voters that they are best equipped to lead the U.S. out of the coronavirus pandemic. The televised portion of Monday's convention begins at 9 p.m. ET. Below is the tentative list of speakers, according to the DNC website.Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota)Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada)Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-New York)Gov. It was a tough few months for the Cincinnati Zoo's beloved behemoth: Henry the Hippo had lost his appetite, only to regain it and lose it again; fought off a serious infection; and his kidneys appeared to be shutting down. The 36-year-old hippo — father to Fiona, whose underweight birth made her famous on social media — died today.Veterinarians and care staff had been trying to bring him back to health, but he continued to slide in recent weeks."We're doing everything we can to keep him comfortable," the zoo said in a recent blog post.According to the zoo, the median life expectancy for a Nile hippo is 35. He came to Cincinnati from Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri. His declining condition came near the tail-end of a pretty joyous year for hippo staff: They nurtured Fiona into childhood after she born six weeks early and half a calf's normal birth weight. The entire hippo bloat -- Henry, Fiona and mother Bibi -- were all reunited just a few months ago. 1013
In its first game in four months, the MLS returned to action in Orlando on Wednesday between hometown Orlando City and Inter Miami CF. But before the two teams kicked off the long-awaited return to team sports in the US, the two squads stood silently for several minutes in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. The Memorial Day death of George Floyd while in police custody prompted national unrest and protest over incidents of police brutality. The return to play is part of a six-week tournament being held in Orlando. The MLS said it will not play the national anthem before games during the tournament.During the moment of silence, players in the starting lineup took a knee while reserves and players from other MLS squads stood around the field with one fist held high into the air.The protests were akin to ones led by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who kneeled during the preegame national anthem during the 2016 season. The MLS said that members of the Black Players for Change promotes the fight for racial equality and human rights, as the group was formed to give Black players in MLS a voice and assist in making systemic change both inside and outside the league. 1207
