WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the National Guard has been “activated” in New York, California and Washington state to help the three states hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis. Trump made the announcement during Sunday’s coronavirus task force briefing, adding that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be covering the cost. A FEMA official at the briefing said that both New York and Washington have already been approved for major disaster declarations to allow the federal government to more seamlessly provide supplies. California’s request is being considered. Trump also said that the Navy hospital ship Mercy will be dispatched to Los Angeles to help to help relieve the state’s overwhelmed hospitals. Non-coronavirus patients will be treated on board. A similar ship is being sent to New York City. The FEMA official said the projected need for hospital beds in California is five times greater than it is in Washington. A luxury hotel in Northern California has been hit with .6 million fine for restricting access to public beaches. The settlement reached Thursday between the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay and the California Coastal Commission is the second largest of its kind for the commission.Lisa Haage, Chief of Enforcement for the Commission, told CNN she hopes these penalties will send a message.".6 million is enough to make them really pay attention and I think really improve their behavior," Haage said. When the hotel opened in 2001, it agreed to provide 25 easily identified public parking spaces and access to the beach through the hotel premises. Over the years, the Commission received numerous reports of the hotel failing to meet these requirements."If you pulled up at the Ritz-Carlton parking lot you certainly would not feel welcome or feel you have a nice public beach there," said Jennifer Savage, California Policy Manager for the Surfrider Foundation, an environmental organization.Reports made to the Commission included incidents where visitors were denied access to the public parking lot or saw the lot being used by hotel valet."I went out there once and saw a public parking sign literally pointing to nowhere," Haage said.Haage noted that signage may seem like a minor issue but said without signs people do not know they have a right to be there."If you don't know that you have a right, you can't exercise it," Haage said. The hotel was issued smaller penalties in 2004, 2007 and 2011, but according to a 1533

A California couple watching TV at home Sunday evening got an unwelcome visitor: a mountain lion that wandered in through their open door.Edward and Kathy Sudduth of Sonora heard a loud slam and were soon met by the big cat, which they think must have been chasing a neighbor's pet. It took them a moment to register what was going on, the pair told 362

A fast-moving line of severe storms known as a derecho stretched from the Midwest to the South Carolina coastline, leaving three people dead and more than 350 damage reports in its wake. The extreme weather phenomena started in central Nebraska in the predawn hours on Friday and traveled all the way to Charleston by Saturday morning.Shelf clouds were seen along the line of storms. Major US cities, such as Kansas City and St. Louis, got a taste of strong winds and heavy rain from these apocalyptic-looking clouds. The term "derecho" is Spanish for the word straight. It was first defined by physicist Dr. Gustavus Hinrichs in his paper in the American Meteorological Journal in 1888.The National Weather Service defines derechos as "widespread, long-lived wind storms associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms."Hurricane force winds and flash flooding are typical of derechos.More than 14 states felt the impact of the storm.Three people were killed Friday as a result of winds toppling trees onto vehicles and a boat, according to authorities. The Kansas City Fire Department responded to a water rescue early Friday morning as streets in downtown flooded from the storms, CNN affiliate KMBC reported. The National Weather Service in St. Louis tweeted that one of its radar sites was struck by lightning as the storms approached, resulting in a 30 minute outage. In Nashville, Tennessee, the storms toppled tents in downtown that were set up for Pride festival events this weekend, according to images posted on social media. The threat of severe storms is not over. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted many of the areas hit by Friday's derecho are facing the likelihood 1714

....These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2020 342
