YAOUNDE, March 24 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Wednesday discussed with Cameroonian President Paul Biya the ways to lift the two country's bilateral relationship to a new height in Yaounde, capital of Cameroon."As developing countries, it is in the fundamental interests of China and Cameroon to seek bilateral friendly cooperation," Jia told Biya in their hour-long talks at the Presidential Palace Wednesday noon.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was making a three-day official visit to the central African nation. Jia Qinglin (L), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), receives a medal from Cameroonian President Paul Biya after their meeting in Yaounde, Cameroon, March 24, 2010Jia and Biya reviewed the progress of bilateral relationship since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1971, particularly the significant improvement after the China-African Cooperation Summit in 2006.To further China-Cameroon relationship, Jia proposed the joint efforts in cementing political foundation, widening economic cooperation, deepening people-to-people exchange and increase coordination on international issues.Biya echoed Jia's proposal, saying his country would like to work more closely with China in those fields.Jia thanked Biya and his government for their efforts to free the Chinese sailors kidnapped in Cameroon early March.On broader China-Africa relationship, Jia said China was committed to implementing the new eight measures introduced by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao last November in Egypt, which also include debt cancellation, agriculture production, infrastructure, education."China would like to listen to the suggestions of Cameroon and other African countries on carrying out those measures in a bid to generate more benefits for African people at an early time," Jia said.Biya said Africa-China cooperation was characterized by equity, mutual benefit and common development, which had brought substantial benefits to African nations.The president said his country would support China's policy and initiative on Africa.After their meeting, Jia and Biya witnessed the signing of a number of cooperative deals between the two countries.Earlier Wednesday, Jia visited a multifunctional stadium in downtown Yaounde which was financed by China.At the landmark stadium, the largest of its kind in central Africa, Jia watched local people play table tennis and stage the performance of Chinese kungfu.Jia, who arrived in the capital of Cameroon on Tuesday afternoon, held talks with President of National Assembly of Cameroon Cavaye Djibril and delivered a key-note speech on China- Africa relationship.Jia will leave for Namibia on Thursday to continue his 10-day African tour.

HELSINKI, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- It was the afternoon of Feb. 12 local time in the Confucius Institute classroom at the downtown University of Helsinki. Lanterns and colorful streamers were hanging high, creating a joyful festival atmosphere.The Spring Festival, once celebrated only in China, in recent times has been gaining greater attention worldwide.And in that small classroom, aspirations of learning more about the traditional Chinese festival drew dozens of excited and attentive students from Finland and other countries.The gathering started with vice director Professor Li Yuanzheng's introduction to the origin and customs of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Then, a short video clip on the festival was played.However, the audience's participation wasn't limited just to listening and watching. To celebrate the "Year of the Tiger," they staged a string of performances to share their happiness.The performances were quite Chinese and included small dramas, Chinese folk songs, poems from the Tang and Song dynasties, and Taichi.Apparently, their love of the traditional Chinese culture simmered into the music and poetry. Additionally, the students also brilliantly displayed their achievements in learning the Chinese language.Perhaps the most symbolic icon of the Spring festival is the dumpling, which would certainly feed the hunger of the students at the Confucius Institute for both food and knowledge.Juhani Riisio, a student at the University of Helsinki, called the dumplings "quite good to taste."The students knew that dumplings are always served during the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays, but making the food was a new challenge for them.The first time doing anything is never easy. However, it could be read from the students' actions and faces that they were doing their best.It seemed that they were making the dumplings as carefully and confidently as they were at learning Chinese.Hard work and eagerness to learn usually pays off. The students were soon able to made decent looking dumplings, though the taste was still waiting to be examined.As the experimental dumplings were cooked and served, delicious smells seemed to stuff the room. Anyone who wanted to know the results of the students' efforts could see nothing but gladness and comfort from the smiles of both teachers and students.The making of a dumpling may take only a couple of hours to learn but a culture could take a lifetime to appreciate. Small and symbolic as the little dumplings are, they help to shorten the distance between the western world and China, facilitating communications amongst different peoples. By learning from each other, it is certain that our tomorrows would be defined by mutual understandings instead of mistrust.

DAR ES SALAAM, March 17 (Xinhua) -- "China is not throwing its weight amid China-Africa cooperation, though China's influence is getting stronger as an emerging power," a senior Tanzanian media official said here on Wednesday.Mkumbwa Ally, Deputy Managing Editor of Tanzania Standard Newspapers which published the official Daily News and Sunday News among others, made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Xinhua."The cooperation between China and Africa including Tanzania is based on mutual-benefit, that's not the 'Power matters the most' policy by some western countries but the way to cooperate with others," Ally said.China's assistance to African countries has no strings-attached, which was preferred by African countries, the senior Tanzanian media official said, mentioning the assistance from China to build the Tanzania-Zambia Railway in the 1970s."The big project of Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) railway was implemented with China's assistance, which helped the two African countries, especially the land-locked Zambia a lot in development and once was the main model of transportation in Tanzania," Ally noted.He added that China's assistance to Africa was brotherly based and the fourth ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Nov. 8-9 and committed to enhance China-Africa cooperation with "people-centered" development, that is "development must look at people's needs".Besides assistance, China-African cooperation is also growing in business sectors, for example, Chinese construction companies built many projects in African countries with the same quality but lower costs, which is good for Africa, meaning that the African government can spend less for the same quality, the senior Tanzanian media official noted."Economists saw China as an emerging power, which has a lot of room for growth. The national economy rose 6.2 percent in the first quarter last year, 7.9 percent in the second quarter, 9.1 percent in the third and 10.7 percent in the fourth.
