BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed its hope that East Asian cooperation would deepen through the upcoming series of leaders' meetings in Hanoi, Vietnam."China attaches importance to and actively takes part in East Asian cooperation. In the series of meetings, China will review with other countries the cooperation that has been carried out and discuss how to further promote the integration process of East Asian cooperation," said Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue.Hu made the remarks at a press conference Thursday afternoon in which officials from the ministries of Commerce, Education and Finance briefed the press on Premier Wen Jiabao's scheduled attendance at the meetings.The meetings, lasting from Oct. 28 to 30, will include: the 13th summit between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) (10+1); the 13th summit between ASEAN, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) (10+3); and the fifth East Asia Summit.Wen will also attend a meeting with the leaders of Japan and the ROK.Hu said China hopes the meetings would promote good-neighborliness and boost cooperation between China and the other Asian countries."During his visit, Premier Wen, together with participating leaders of other countries, will review the achievements of China-ASEAN cooperation, 10+3 cooperation, and East Asian cooperation, as well as cooperation concerning East Asia Summit. BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's primary energy consumption will be kept to between 4 to 4.2 billion tonnes of standard coal by 2015, Jiang Bing, director of the development and planning department of the National Energy Administration (NEA), said on Saturday.Jiang made the remarks at a forum held by the energy research institute of the State Grid Corporation of China.Primary energy refers to existing natural energy which does not need processing, such as fossil fuels, nuclear fuels, biomass energy, hydropower, wind power, solar power and others.As China has adopted a low-carbon development strategy, the country plans to raise the non-fossil energies ratio in its total primary energy consumption to 15 percent by 2020, and carbon dioxide emissions per GDP would be reduced by 40 to 45 percent by 2020 from 2005 levels, Jiang said.Thus, primary energy consumption must be kept to below 4.2 billion tonnes in the next five-year plan (2011-2015) to achieve the two targets, Jiang said.China's per capita energy consumption now stands at 2.5 tonnes standard coal per capita and, if left uncontrolled, China might see its energy consumption top 7 billion tonnes of standard coal in 2030, Jiang said.However, he explained that despite the huge total amounts, the per capita energy consumption would only be equivalent to current levels in Japan.Thus, the nation's economic growth mode transformation is quite necessary and it would be a strategic choice for China to control its total energy consumption in the 15 years, Jiang said.China's primary energy consumption topped 3.07 billion tonnes of standard coal in 2009, up 30 percent from 2005, according to the NEA.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Marine Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) will conduct a joint drill with their counterpart of Thailand, China's Ministry of National Defense said Wednesday.Called "Blue Assault-2010," the joint drill will take place in Sattahip, Thailand, from Oct. 26 to Nov. 14, a ministry statement said.The joint training exercise will be the first for the PLA marines, according to the statement.The joint drill will focus on anti-terrorism. It will also aim at helping marines from Thailand and China learn from each other, enhance mutual understanding, step up friendly exchange and cooperation in a bid to improve the capabilities of both countries' marine corps to handle new challenges and threats together.

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Saturday wrapped up a fruitful visit to France, opening a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.With Hu's three-day visit to France, which started on Thursday, the heads of state and top legislators of the two countries have visited each other's country within one year for the first time.Earlier this year, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, visited China.
