(AP) — A California man whose suicide attempt left his face disfigured had successful facial transplant surgery 18 months later, and the lead surgeon estimates his face should be "pristine" in as little as three years.Cameron Underwood, 26, of Yuba City, had the 25-hour operation that involved more than 100 medical staff in January. Less than a year later, Underwood can speak intelligibly. He is golfing and has even gone skydiving, The Sacramento Bee reported Friday.Underwood appeared Thursday at a news conference at New York City's NYU Langone Health center, where he smiled and thanked medical staffers and his family for giving him a second chance at life."There have been so many amazing advances in surgery. I'm living proof of that. A group of civilians confronted the suspect, 24-year-old Victor Magana, after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and took off from San Jose with their daughter. Al Ashcroft, a man visiting the Central Coast from Oregon, recognized the suspect's vehicle, a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe, from the alert Monday morning at a Shell gas station. While he blocked the car in and called police, nearby men helped restrain the driver. "Four of us surrounded him and said, 'You're not leaving,'" Ashcroft said. Deputies say Magana locked his keys inside the car with the child while making a pit stop in Cambria. "He hit the window twice to try and break in and finally a guy bear hugged him from behind and I took the rock away," Ashcroft said. Witnesses say Magana bought snacks at the store and tried to break into his car to feed his daughter. "He kept screaming that he wasn't that guy, that it wasn't him and that his daughter hadn't eaten in six hours," said Tammy Hall. The little girl was strapped in the front seat the whole time civilians were attempting to restrain the father. Many are praising the people who stepped up to save her. "I am amazed that these men were able to hold him here and stop him from taking off. They were very brave. Heroes," Hall said.Both Magana and the girl are in custody. Magana will eventually be transferred back to Santa Clara County, according to authorities. According to NBC Bay Area, Magana's girlfriend suffered at least one stab wound. There were more than 40 passengers and crew members onboard at 11 p.m. when the fire started.Passengers who were unable to board lifeboats as the steamboat caught fire were forced to jump into the water and cling to debris or swim for their lives to shore. "She's worried when she's gone there will be nobody there to care for him.Thiers said Joel lived in a group home five days a week and spent weekends with his grandmother.After Parks is medically evaluated, police say she’ll be charged with 2nd degree murder. "At the end of the day, Lillian is responsible for the death of another human being," Thiers said. "So, she will be charged with 2nd-degree murder upon her release.
