WASHINGTON, D.C. — After millions upon millions of Americans cast their ballots on Election Day, the final vote for president – the one that really counts – comes down to 538 people who make up the Electoral College.Marla Blunt-Carter is one of them.“That thought of our ancestor who couldn't even write his name signing his voter registration card, at a time where really their vote didn't count, to being someone that is now voting in this electoral process,” she said. “It's indescribable.”Blunt-Carter is one of the three electors from Delaware. All three of them are Democrats because President-elect Joe Biden won his home state.“To be one of three that represents the Delaware voter that calls him their own is just huge,” Blunt-Carter said. “And then you look at the fact that the Vice president-elect is a woman of color - that is doubly amazing for me.”While she was selected by Delaware Democratic party officials to be an elector, in other states, you have to run for the privilege.“In our long history as a country, there have been very few people that have actually served in this role,” said Jonathan Fletcher, who is an elector from North Carolina.Fletcher ran to be an elector at the Republican State Convention, when it was held in North Carolina. He cast his vote for President Donald Trump, who carried the state.“It's kind of a lifelong dream,” he said. “I joke that it's a short lifelong dream – I'm only 28 – but it is a lifelong dream of mine.”The Electoral College and the popular vote don’t always match up. It’s happened five times in the country’s history, including twice in the 21st century, in 2000 and 2016. Some say that’s unfair and are calling for the Electoral College to be abolished.So, how do these electors feel about it?“It gives states like North Carolina, who are kind of middle of the pack in the electoral shuffle, it gives us a lot more equal standing with the rest of the country,” Fletcher said.Blunt-Carter said she sees why people would have some issues with the Electoral College.“I understand that people think that it is far past the time where we start to look at doing this differently,” she said. “But that's not the job of the elector. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has welcomed Poland's president to the White House, and sending more U.S. troops to Poland to bolster NATO's eastern flank against Russian aggression is at the top of their agenda.Even before Andrzej Duda arrived, the U.S. ambassador to Poland said the U.S. will send another 1,000 troops to Poland — over and above the 1,000 declared last year.But the troops might not necessarily be transferred from Germany, where Trump is planning to withdraw about 10,000 U.S. troops.This is Duda’s third visit to Washington since Trump took office and the first head of state visit at the White House since the pandemic began.Trump and Duda are expected to hold a joint press conference at about 3:30 p.m. ET at the White House. WAUKESHA -- A train struck and killed a pedestrian and their dog Monday morning in Waukesha, Wisconsin.Waukesha Police Captain Dan Baumann told Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee that the train hit a pedestrian and a dog around 6:40 a.m. near Barstow and Carroll.The train ended up stopping at Broadway Street in Waukesha for roughly two hours -- which blocked eight streets in the downtown Waukesha area during the morning commute.Police are still at the scene investigating and have not released any other information.  558

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Deborah Birx is warning Americans who traveled for Thanksgiving and attended a large gathering that they should assume they were infected with the coronavirus.The coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force is advising those who gathered with numerous loved ones for the holiday to get tested in next few days.“If your family traveled, you have to assume that you are exposed and you became infected and you really need to get tested in the next week and you need to avoid anyone in your family with comorbidities or (who is) over 65,” Birx told “Face the Nation” on Sunday.Birx also says the task force is even asking families to mask indoors if they chose to gather during Thanksgiving and others went across the country or even into the next state.“And if you're over 65 or you have comorbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately because we know that our therapeutics work best, both our antivirals and our monoclonal antibodies, work best very early in disease,” said Birx.During her interview, Birx referred to the current spike in COVID-19 cases as the nation’s “third wave” and compared it to second wave we saw over the summer.“We saw what happened post Memorial Day,” said Birx. “Now we are deeply worried about what could happen post-Thanksgiving because the number of cases, 25,000 versus 180,000 a day, that's why we are deeply concerned.”Birx says she’s worried about how last week’s holiday gatherings may increase the case count even more, especially in states with fewer COVID-19 restrictions.
