SAN DIEGO (AP and KGTV) — Marine Corps officials say charges are pending against 12 Camp Pendleton Marines accused of being involved in smuggling, including driving migrants across the US-Mexico border.The Marines, who are part of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, are in confinement, officials said.Those being held include two Marine riflemen who were stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents on July 3 driving from the border with three Mexicans in the back of a BMW. SAN DIEGO — Police are investigating multiple shootings that erupted in downtown San Diego Monday night.The gunfire was reported around 11 p.m. at several locations in the East Village neighborhood, about three blocks east of Petco Park's tailgate parking lot.A crew for Scripps station KGTV in San Diego was at the scene of one shooting at 15th Street and Island Avenue where several victims were being loaded into ambulances. Two other people suffering gunshot wounds were located near Market Street.No further information about the victims is available at this time.A witness told KGTV that he heard about a dozen gunshots coming from different locations and two vehicles speeding from the scene.It is unknown at this time if there are any other victims. San Diego Police Department Gang units are also on scene.The shooting happened not long after the San Diego Padres wrapped up their game against the Washington Nationals at Petco Park. 1015

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A car struck and killed a pedestrian in Encanto, and the driver then fled the scene, police said today.The deadly crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Imperial Avenue near 66th Street.A woman tried to cross Imperial Avenue but did not stop for oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.RELATED: Man crashes into police car during chase in La MesaThe woman was struck and she died at the scene, Heims said. SAN DIEGO — The race to replace former Congressman Duncan Hunter in California's 50th Congressional District is in a virtual deadheat, according to a new scientific poll.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune SurveyUSA poll shows Republican Darrell Issa, a former congressman, leading Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar 46 percent to 45 percent, within the 5.4 percent margin of error. “This poll I think is a shocker for many political observers, including myself,” said Thad Kousser, political scientist at UC San Diego. “You have an establishment, well-known candidate in Darrell Issa with proven fundraising ability in a district that until a couple years ago was the reddest district in California, so many people thought that by this time the real start of the campaign season Darrell Issa would have a huge lead over Ammar Campa-Najjar.”Hunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to a single felony conspiracy count. Federal prosecutors accused him and his wife Margaret of misusing 0,000 in campaign funds. Hunter, under indictment during the 2018 election, still defeated Campa-Najjar by 3 percentage points, or 9,000 votes in the 50th District, which leans Republican.Campa-Najjar is running in 2020 to take the open seat.
