GUANGZHOU, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Police conducted a hostage rescue drill on Sunday in south China's Guangzhou City as authorities beefed up security about one month prior to the opening of the 2010 Asian Games.Police first practiced rescue operation simulating the bus hostage crisis in the Philippine capital about two months ago. Eight Hong Kong tourists were slain during an ill-prepared rescue by the Philippine police against a lone gunman who hijacked a tourist bus in Manila on Aug. 23.Police officers were not told of the time and location of the drill in advance to test the emergency response of the city's police forces, a senior police officer said.During the drill, a group of armed men "hijacked" a bus carrying athletes and gunned down security guards on their way out of the Asian Games Village. After "negotiations" failed, police quickly broke into the bus and seized the attackers. The second part of the drill involved in rescuing "hijacked" foreign athletes in a room in the Village. After finding the hijackers attempted to kill the hostages, the police stormed the room, overwhelming the attackers and freeing the hostages.Chinese authorities have activated over one hundred checkpoints on the roads and waterways linking areas to the hosting cities of the Games on Sunday.A total of 132 checkpoints, scattered in Guangdong Province and five neighboring regions, are responsible for screening people, vehicles and goods, officials with the Ministry of Public Security said. The 2010 Asian Games is scheduled to open on Nov. 12. The events will be held in four cities in Guangdong.

DUBLIN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Li Changchun said here Sunday that Beijing and Dublin have huge potential to deepen bilateral ties and cooperation.Since the two sides established diplomatic relations 31 years ago, bilateral relations have developed steadily, said Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, upon his arrival for a two-day official goodwill visit.Especially in recent years, China and Ireland have increased high-level exchanges, carried out fruitful and mutually-beneficial cooperation in various fields including politics, trade, education, culture and science and technology, and maintained close coordination on international affairs, he noted.Li Changchun (L, Front), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, is welcomed by Irish officials upon his arrival in Dublin, capital of Ireland, on Sept. 26, 2010. GUANGZHOU, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) - Flooding has killed at least 13 people and left 34 missing in south China's Guangdong Province on Tuesday, local authorities said.Heavy rains caused by typhoon Fanabi battered many parts of Guangdong Tuesday.Further, a dam at the Xinyi Yinyan Tin Mine, owned by Zijin Mining Group Co. in Qianbai Township of Xinyi City, collapsed after being hit by a landslide, leaving five dead, six missing and seven injured, Xinxi city government officials said.Landslides and floods also killed three, buried 12 and left three others missing in Rupingtang Township, it said. The disasters toppled 346 houses and also has caused economic losses of 460 million yuan (68.5 million U.S. dollars) in Xinyi. In Yangchun City, flooding is reported to have killed three, left eight missing and forced the evacuation of 18,930 villagers. .Shuangjiao Township in Yangchun received 548.5 mm of rainfall in seven hours through 8 a.m. Tuesday, the largest rainfall in 58 years, according to authorities.Flood also killed two people and left five missing in Gaozhou City.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that China's rapid economic development is in the interest of U.S. economy."It's good for us that China has done well," Obama said at a town-hall-style meeting telecast live on CNBC before heading to Pennsylvania to raise money for a Democratic Senate candidate. His address is in line with U.S. Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner's testimony to the Congress last Thursday."We have very significant economic interests in our relationship with China," Geithner said, "a strong and growing China benefits the United States, just as a strong and growing United States is good for China."In responding to a question about China's currency issue, Obama said that China's currency is lower than the market says that it should be, but trade is in the benefit for both sides."I just want to make sure trade is good for American businesses and American workers," Obama said."We are going to continue to insist that on this issue, and on all trade issues between us and China, that it is a two-way street, " he said.Facing November elections shaped by voter anger at the sour economy, U.S. lawmakers are weighing bills that would slap sanctions on Chinese goods, amid accusations that China keeps its currency -- and thereby its exports -- artificially cheap. The Obama administration acknowledged that China's imports supported the global economy and contributed substantially to recovery around the world. With over 1.3 billion people and an economy continuing to grow at or near double-digit rates, China is the U.S.' fastest-growing major overseas market.China's record of bringing hundreds of millions out of poverty, building a rapidly growing middle class, and now its efforts to encourage growth led by domestic demand, ultimately mean more demand for American goods and services. In order to pull the economy out of recession, Obama launched National Export Initiative (NEI) in March and set the goal of doubling the U.S. export in five years and creating two million jobs in the country. The Obama administration is clear that the vast Chinese market is a crucial part to fulfill the goal."Increasing opportunities for U.S. firms and workers through expanded trade and investment with China will be an important part of the success of the President's National Export Initiative and our efforts to support job growth more broadly."According to the Treasury Department, China is a critical market for a broad range of American products, from agriculture, to manufacturing, to services.China was the largest market for U.S. soybeans last year, importing over 9 billion dollars. In the manufacturing sector, the United States has already exported nearly 3.5 billion dollars in aircraft to China this year alone, and U.S. exports of automobiles and parts to China have grown over 200 percent. The issues in China and U.S. economic relations and trade should be properly solved through consultations on an equal footing. Exerting pressure cannot solve the issue. Rather, it may lead to the contrary, China's Foreign Ministry said recently.
