Hospitals and states collecting case data on COVID-19 patients will now be reporting that data directly to the federal government, instead of the CDC's online database.Beginning this week, according to an update on the Health and Human Services website, states and hospitals are being asked to submit data directly to the federal government and task force in an effort to cut down on duplicate requests and minimize the reporting burden on hospitals and facilities.“As of July 15,, 2020, hospitals should no longer report the Covid-19 information in this document to the National Healthcare Safety Network site,” the statement reads. The emphasis was added in the original document.The National Healthcare Safety Network site is the CDC’s site for tracking infectious diseases.The document says the change in reporting will help the White House coronavirus task force to allocate supplies like personal protective gear, ventilators and drugs like remdesivir.Some are worried the change in where the data will be kept means a change in public access to the data.“Historically, C.D.C. has been the place where public health data has been sent, and this raises questions about not just access for researchers but access for reporters, access for the public to try to better understand what is happening with the outbreak," Jen Kates, the director of global health and H.I.V. policy with the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation, told the the New York Times, who first reported on this change.Many researchers, scientific modelers and health officials in municipalities around the country rely on the CDC’s data to make projections and time-sensitive decisions.Michael Caputo, the assistant secretary for public affairs at the department, said in a statement to CNN, a "new faster and complete data system is what our nation needs to defeat the coronavirus and the CDC, an operating division of HHS, will certainly participate in this streamlined all-of-government response. From making snow angels to picking snowball fights with your friends, playing in the snow can be a lot of fun.But one Colorado town didn't think so. In Severance, a town about 60 miles north of Denver, it's long been illegal to throw snowballs.Dane Best, 9, thought the law was "silly." The young town resident might have even broken it once in a while.So with the help of his classmates, Best decided to take it upon himself to change the law. He collected letters and signatures in support of snowball fights, did some research and presented his case at a Severance Town Council meeting on Monday."It is an outdated law," Best told council members, according to CNN affiliate KCNC. "And I want to throw a snowball without getting in trouble."Now he can, after the council unanimously approved a measure to legalize throwing snowballs within town limits.Mayor Don McLeod told CNN that the law was part of a more elaborate ordinance, Sec. 10-5-80, that said, "It is unlawful for any person to throw or shoot any stone or any other missile upon or at any person, animal, building, tree or other public or private property; or at or against any vehicle or equipment design for the transportation of persons or property."When Dane and his classmates visited town hall this fall on a field trip, McLeod pointed out that the law -- although it's not enforced -- would include throwing snowballs at people."The kids were super intrigued when they found out they have been breaking the law this whole time," the mayor told CNN."Every year when the kiddos come to town hall, I point out little laws we have, and I challenge these third-graders to change them. Dane was the first student to take me up on this, and I'm very proud that he did."After winning his argument, Dane was given the town's first legal snowball to throw in celebration. His parents couldn't be more excited."We are proud of him for taking initiative to make some change, no matter how small it may be," Derrick Best, Dane's father, told KCNC. FROSTPROOF, Fla. — The triple murder of three close friends is under investigation in Florida.The Polk County Sheriff's Office says around 10:06 p.m. on Friday, one victim, 27-year-old Rollins, called his dad for help. Officials say his dad knew Brandon had gone fishing with two of his friends, 30-year-old Keven Springfield and 23-year-old Damion Tillman, who were also victims. All were from Frostproof.Brandon's dad drove to the unincorporated area of Frostproof and when he arrived, he found his son barely alive, officials say. The other two friends were found dead.Brandon's dad drove to a close-by gas station to call 911.When first responders arrived, all three victims were found dead. Officials said they appeared to have been beaten and shot."This is a horrific scene. I've been to a lot of murder scenes in my life and this ranks among the worst I've been to," said Sheriff Grady Judd.According to families, the three men were best friends and knew each other for years. They said the three men were fishing on land, not in a boat."We are seeking leads. We need help so we can solve this crime sooner rather than later because there are one or more, we suspected more, murderers, that killed three people in a quiet community," said Sheriff Judd.The sheriff's office is asking for the public's help on any information on the incident.
