They're not thinking about how their actions could affect other people," said Licensed Therapist Jaime Bronstein.She believes young people go to COVID parties either to be exposed because they fall into peer pressure or they truly believe the virus doesn't exist."They also don't have very strong impulse control. And that's because their prefrontal cortex is not fully developed. And it's not fully developed until they're 25 years old. And that's responsible for making the right and wrong decision," she explained.Bronstein says many attending these parties are young single men going through the 'Young Male Syndrome.'"They just love engaging in high-risk behavior such as high-speed driving, doing illicit drugs, doing the tide-pod challenge, the cinnamon challenge, and in this case, going to a COVID party," she said.Here in the Tampa Bay area, we've seen young people lining up outside local establishments without masks and not social distancing.So how can parents get their kids to realize, they're not invincible?"First sit down with your kids and have a discussion about decision making and consequences. And you want to be able to talk with your children, not to them. You want them to feel seen and heard and you really want to listen to them," she said.And if you have adult friends not following CDC guidelines?This social worker recommends going into the conversation without any judgment."You don't want the other person to feel defensive. And basically just go in with compassion. I care about you. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A La Mesa dessert shop is beating the odds, flourishing through the pandemic.Toran Grays opened Extraordinary Banana Pudding March 14th, the day after the President declared a national emergency due to the coronavirus.Grays was set up for success from the get go, with prepackaged desserts available for take out, and partnering with Door Dash so he could be COVID compliant."I didn’t know COVID was going to hit so fast, but I did have belief in my product, so I said you know what I’m going to give it a try, you gotta try something at some point in your life if you want to do something great," Grays said.He tried starting up at least two other businesses before Extraordinary Banana Pudding,"I started a clothing company, an online shipping company, none of it worked before."Grays was determined. He grew up in Webster and Imperial Beach, and as a kid his grandmother came to visit, "my grandmother came down here from Mississippi, she made [banana pudding] for a bunch of our family members and I fell in love with it instantly!"Grays said it was his great-grandmother's recipe that's been handed down generations. After his grandmother passed away he realized he could keep their legacy alive.He struggled at first getting the permits for the business, but once the doors opened and customers tasted his creations, they were sold.He expanded from the traditional banana pudding flavor to everything from cheesecake to pistachio.Thursday a couple drove all the way down from Oceanside for the pudding that's catching fire on social media.Grays said a family came all the way from Texas and vowed to come back every summer until he could open up a location closer to home.Grays' business has been so successful, he's opening another shop in Las Vegas in August, headed by his brother. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several streets were shut down in La Mesa Sunday morning after someone reportedly opened fire at a motorcyclist. Police say the shooting happened around 3 a.m. at the intersection of University Avenue and Marian Street. According to police, someone fired at least three shots at the motorcyclist, causing him to crash into a nearby fence. The motorcyclist wasn’t hit with gunfire during the shooting, but police say he was taken to the hospital with leg injuries due to the crash. At this time police are searching for a dark-colored sedan last seen heading east on University after the shooting. 631

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A car burst into flames after a crash in La Mesa early Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on SR-94 near the 125 before 3:30 a.m. CHP says the driver was speeding on SR-94 west when he tried merging onto the 125 on-ramp. The man then lost control and flipped several times before the car went up in flames. Witnesses stopped to help, but the man was able to get out of the vehicle on his own. The driver was able to escape the crash with only minor injuries. CHP says he is being checked for DUI. Traffic was shut down on the 125 on-ramp for a short time after the crash, but was reopened before 6 a.m. 676

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Ohio nonprofit LakewoodAlive has apologized after a man dressed in a blackface Tiger Woods costume marched in the organization’s Spooky Pooch Parade. People on social media have called the costume racist, disgusting and offensive.In a video posted to Facebook by LakewoodAlive that has since been removed, the unidentified man was seen wearing blackface makeup while dressed in Woods’ trademark red polo shirt and Nike hat. He was seen holding a frame with the words “Breaking News – Tiger’s Back,” and pushing a pet stroller outfitted with a mock putting green.By Monday morning, several users responded on the nonprofit's Facebook page condemning the man’s costume as well as the organization for allowing him to march in the parade.“You need to respond to the fact that a man in blackface marched in your parade,” Clara Masters said in a Facebook comment. “This is not okay and incredibly offensive.”“This racist costume should never have been allowed in the event,” wrote Alison Meredith. “The participant should have been stopped at registration, and when that failed should have been pulled from the parade at whatever point an organizer saw it, even at the risk of 'causing a scene'.
