COLOMBO, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne and the visiting Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang stressed here on Friday to enhance the two friendly nations' cooperation in a wide range of areas including economy, education, culture and international affairs.Jayaratne told Zhang that Sri Lanka's economy has been greatly benefited by some mega-projects funded by China in recent years. He also expressed his gratitude to China's participation in Sri Lanka's economic rebuilding after the conclusion of a 30-year-old civil war.The Sri Lanka prime minister said Sri Lanka treasures the friendship between the two countries and unswervingly supports China on issues of her core interests.Zhang congratulated Sri Lanka for the end of the civil war, as well as the steady progress in rebuilding and social-economic development.He said China hopes to continue to increase friendly exchange between the two countries and enhance cooperation in the areas of infrastructure, industry, communication, energy, education, culture, tourism, among others.Zhang also proposed the two countries to enhance multilateral cooperation in the international arena to protect the just rights and interests of the developing nations.They also witnessed the signing of several economic and commercial cooperation agreements after their talks.Sri Lankan speaker Chamal Rajapaksa held talks with Zhang earlier on Friday.The Chinese vice premier arrived in Colombo Thursday night for a three-day visit to Sri Lanka, the second stop of his four-nation tour which will also take him to Greece and Austria. PARIS, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Legislative bodies of China and France launched their regular parliamentary exchange mechanism on Thursday, vowing to further push forward the Sino-French comprehensive strategic partnership.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, jointly declared the beginning of the first meeting of Sino-French Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.Wu said the launch of the high-level meeting between the two legislative bodies signals the Sino-French parliamentary exchanges were promoted to a new stage.Accoyer said the regular parliamentary exchange mechanism could serve as an important platform for both nations to exchange views on mutual concerns and promote bilateral cooperation in politics, technology, new energy and environmental protection.Ahead of the meeting, Wu and Accoyer held talks on bilateral ties and parliamentary cooperation.Accoyer said France attached great importance to Wu's visit as Wu is the first Chinese top legislator that visited France in 13 years.France regards China as a strategic partner, expecting to expand all-round strategic cooperation with China, boost coordination on international issues, through joint efforts against global financial crisis, climate change and other challenges, he said.Wu said his ongoing visit to France is aimed to build a closer relation between the Chinese NPC and the French National Assembly. BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and South Africa announced a "comprehensive strategic partnership" on Tuesday during South African President Jacob Zuma's first state visit to China.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Zuma signed the Beijing Declaration after their one-hour talk in the Great Hall of the People Tuesday afternoon, during which the two presidents praised the growth of bilateral ties and agreed to lift relations to new heights."In this new spirit of China-South Africa relations, we will work together to advance the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership," Hu told Zuma.Hu made specific proposals that the two countries maintain close contacts between leaders, utilize cooperative mechanism to further implement bilateral cooperation documents and strengthen exchanges between ruling parties and legislatures.In the economic area, Hu hoped both sides would promote trade and investment growth, energy cooperation and optimize financial services.China and South Africa need to work together in culture, education, media, health and tourism, Hu said, bolstering more academic and research cooperation.On the multilateral front, the countries need to improve consultation and coordination to further South-to-South cooperation and tackle global challenges.
BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhuanet) --Traffic authorities were still struggling to cope with days-long congestion on a major national expressway, nine days after traffic slowed to a snail's pace, and nearby residents are profiting on the latest traffic snarl by overcharging drivers for food.Since August 14, thousands of Beijing-bound trucks have jammed the expressway again, and traffic has stretched for more than 100 kilometers between Beijing and Huai'an in Heibei Province, and Jining in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China National Radio (CNR) reported Sunday.Small traffic accidents or broken-down cars are aggravating the jam, the report said."Insufficient traffic capacity on the National Expressway 110 caused by maintenance construction since August 19 is the major cause of the congestion," a publicity officer with the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, told the Global Times on condition of anonymity Sunday.Under current traffic regulations, the National Expressway 110 (G110), heading northwest from Beijing to Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province, and then heading directly west, is available to trucks with a carrying capacity of eight tons and above. The road suffered serious damage due to the greater volume of heavy trucks.This month there have been more trucks carrying excessive coal or fruit, but the Beijing section of the Beijing-Tibet Expressway is available only to trucks with a weight of less than four tons.The congestion is expected to last for almost a month, since the construction is due for completion September 13.Traffic congestion and road safety have become major concerns for Chinese motorists.For drivers, suffering the congestion on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway is nothing new. BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.
