ENCINITAS (CNS) - A woman is dead today after being struck and killed by a vehicle in Encinitas, authorities said.At 8 p.m. Saturday, the victim, in her 50s, was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound on the 2600 block of South Coast (101) Highway, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.``The driver of the involved vehicle stopped immediately and remained at the scene of the collision,'' said Sgt. Jeffrey Houser, with the NorthCoastal Station. ``The driver and nearby bystanders rendered medical aid to the injured pedestrian.''The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.Drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the collision. Facebook has come under fire for a "barbaric use of technology" that allowed the sale of a child bride to be held on its site.An auction was held on the social media platform for a 16-year-old girl in South Sudan which sought payment for her hand in marriage.Facebook said the post was taken down as soon as the company learned of it, but that wasn't until after the girl was married.According to children's rights organization Plan International, the girl was bid on by five men, some of whom were reportedly high-ranking South Sudanese government officials.Activists are concerned that this auction -- for which the father reportedly received 500 cows, three cars and ,000 in exchange for his daughter -- could inspire other families to use social media sites to receive larger payments.Plan International's country director in South Sudan, George Otim, said: "That a girl could be sold for marriage on the world's biggest social networking site in this day and age is beyond belief."He added: "This barbaric use of technology is reminiscent of latter-day slave markets." 1084

Excessive alcohol use could increase your risk for all types of dementia, particularly early-onset dementia, according to a new study.The study, published Tuesday in the journal Lancet Public Health,?looked at over 1 million adults released from French hospitals between 2008 and 2013 who were diagnosed with dementia, a clinical syndrome characterized by a progressive deterioration in cognitive ability.Using data from the French National Hospital Discharge database, the researchers found that alcohol-use disorders were diagnosed in 16.5% of the men with dementia and 4% of the women with dementia -- over twice as much as in those without dementia for both sexes.Alcohol-use disorders refer to "the chronic harmful use of alcohol or alcohol dependence," the researchers wrote.In order to isolate the role of alcohol use, patients with neurological disorders such as Parkinson's and Huntington's, which can also lead to dementia, were excluded from the study."The most novel result is the large contribution of alcohol-use disorders to the burden of dementia over the lifespan," said Dr. Michael Schwarzinger, a researcher at the Transitional Health Economics Network in Paris and a leading author of the study.The association was particularly strong for those with early-onset dementia, diagnosed when the patient is younger than 65. (KGTV) -- Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying a woman accused of stealing identities.On February 26, Deputies were contacted by a resident in Encinitas who said someone stole her identity and tried to withdraw money from her bank account.Authorities say the suspect also applied for and received credit cards in the victim’s name and made charges on the fraudulent accounts.Detectives later discovered that the same suspect also stole identities of several other people throughout San Diego and Riverside Counties.Anyone with information is asked to call the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station at 760-966-3500 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime Stoppers is offering up to a ,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to an arrest. 789
