SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver crashed his Mercedes-Benz through an underground parking garage gate, causing the gate to fall onto his car and leaving the vehicle -- and himself -- trapped at the entrance.The incident was reported at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment complex in the 4300 block of Menlo Avenue, according to San Diego police.With the large gate on top of the car, responding officers helped the driver out of his vehicle.ABC 10News learned the man was treated by medics at the scene but was also being evaluated for possible DUI. He did not appear to be seriously hurt.It's unclear why the driver was attempting to enter the parking garage since he reportedly told police he does not live in the apartment complex. 743

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A college student is suing the San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies from the Las Colinas Detention Facility after she disfigured her face while detained.The lawsuit stems from May 6, 2019. San Diego State student Tanya Suarez, 23, tried methamphetamine with a new group of friends.The document states she had psychotic delusions in a gas station parking lot, causing nearby San Diego police officers to arrest her for being under the influence of drugs.According to the lawsuit, at Las Colinas Detention Facility, while being fingerprinted, she heard another woman screaming about her eyes. That's when Suarez started to claw out her own right eye.Deputies restrained her on a gurney and cut her acrylic nails leaving them jagged.The suit claims deputies then placed her in a safety cell unrestrained. Suarez started clawing again at her right eye.She says the entire time she was screaming and saw a guard standing outside her cell filming her with an iPhone.Within five minutes she scratched both eyes out.Documents state it took another 5-10 minutes before deputies entered the cell.Suarez is now blind and, according to the lawsuit, she was known "to sleep with the lights on because she is afraid of the dark. Now she lives in complete darkness."The lawsuit states she told nurses she is bipolar and was previously hospitalized for wanting to commit suicide.Suarez's lawsuit states she is going back to finish her psychology degree at SDSU and is taking classes with the Center for the Blind; adding she wants to help others who suffer from mental illness and drug abuse.The San Diego County Sheriff's Department sent 10News the following statement: 1681

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A City pool is now drained and shut down after vandals threw glass into it.Parents who bring their kids to the Allied Gardens pool for swim lessons were notified on Monday of the closure. "Honestly my reaction, I just kind of sat there dumbfounded, they called and said the classes were canceled, me being curious I asked why, they said vandalism. I said you have to be kidding. This is my neighborhood!" said Marie Veenstra, a mom of three.She says two of her children attend lessons at the pool on Glenroy Street four days a week. "It is super frustrating, not only as a mom who can't bring her kids to the pool, but thinking about the environment," said Veenstra.The City says broken shards of glass can be impossible to see or retrieve without draining the pool. Broken glass found in and around the pool results in having to drain the pool completely, conduct a thorough cleaning of the pool bottom to retrieve remaining pieces of glass, refill the pool with water and necessary chemicals to ensure the pool is safe and then reopen the facility.The City's safety protocol is consistent with the Model Aquatic Health Code. Draining and refilling the more than 320,000-gallon pool will cost the City roughly ,000 when factoring in personnel.
