SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As Governor Gavin Newsom orders seven California counties to close bars to stop the spread of coronavirus, San Diego County made that same decision on their own and now, some San Diego bars are trying to figure out how to stay open to save their future.Related: San Diego County to close bars that don't serve food ahead of July 4 to slow COVID-19 spreadThe directive from the county states that bars, wineries and breweries have to close by July 1 if they don’t serve food. There is an exception for businesses like rural wineries that have dominantly outdoor, spread out seating. For the food rule, a bag of chips does not count. An outline of the rules states businesses have to offer a sit down, dine-in meal and any alcohol purchased has to be on the same transaction of the meal.The co-owners of Carriage House Lounge said they don’t meet this requirement, but they’re brainstorming ways to add food so they can stay open.“Now we gotta close again? At least if we can open a little bit with some food, maybe we can make enough to pay the rent anyway so we don’t get deeper behind,” said Andrew Haines.Haines said he and his business partner Rachel Dymond been back open for less than three weeks before this second closure. During that span when they were open between closures, they barely hit 50% for sales, which has been enough to pay rent and paychecks, but not bring in a profit. They said they can’t consider a second closure, so they’re talking about bringing in catering or partnering with a local restaurant to have food and be able to stay open.They’re not alone in this plan.Chad Cline has ownership in multiple San Diego bars and restaurants, which he says have also been hurting financially through the last three months. He said his businesses that don’t serve food are also going to now have a food option so they can meet new regulations and be able to stay open. Cline said he doesn’t agree with the thought process behind the new law.“I don’t think any rational person is going to be able to wrap their head around the difference between going to a table and having a drink and then going to that same table and having a drink and a hamburger and the second trip is okay but the first trip is not okay,” said Cline.When asked why the food distinction was made, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said bars lead to impaired judgement which can impact carefulness, people spend more time in bars, the loud setting requires people to yell which can spread droplets and the congregating makes contact tracing more difficult.Cline said they’ll follow the rules but he isn’t happy with the leaders who made this decision.“We just play the game and go okay we have to serve food so we’ll serve food, but if I’m being completely clear it is kind of a game at this point because we’re just trying to exist and we just have to figure out how to follow the guidelines,” said Cline. 2922

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Scientists are harnessing a not-so-secret weapon in the fight against climate change: plants.“Plants are very good at one thing and that is to catch carbon dioxide out of the air and using the power of the sunlight to fix it to make into bio-materials," said Wolfgang Busch.A plant scientist and professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Busch is co-director of the Harnessing Plants Initiative (HPI). "Plants are superheroes," said Busch. “They can do what nothing else can do, no technical solution at that scale, to catch a lot of carbon dioxide and fix it.”Yet, humanity is still losing the climate change battle. After decades of burning fossil fuels, the planet continues to warm, with natural disasters growing more frequent and intense.Busch says while plants suck up carbon dioxide, some of it is released back into the atmosphere.“How can we actually make plants better in not only catching the carbon dioxide but keeping it in the soil?” said Busch.That's the challenge his team set out to solve, working to identify genes that help plants store more carbon underground. “Trying to enhance their superhero capability even more," said Busch. They’re developing plants with deeper, more massive roots, rich in a substance called suberin, a natural carbon storage device. Combined, these traits supercharge the plants, allowing them to absorb more carbon dioxide and keep it locked underground.“We think it has all the characteristics of something that can make a huge impact addressing this very difficult question, how to draw down carbon dioxide from the air and store it," said Busch. These climate fighting traits can then be transferred to the world’s six most prevalent crops: corn, soybean, canola, rice, wheat, and sorghum.By tapping into the existing agricultural supply chain, researchers say more than 75 percent of the world’s cropland could be converted into carbon storage.“We think in 10 to 15 years, after partnering with different stakeholders, seeds will be available to farmers at scale to plant the first carbon-sequestering crops,” said Busch.Busch says one of their top priorities is ensuring the initiative will benefit farmers, aiming to produce plants that will equal, if not exceed, the yields of current crops. And storing carbon underground not only protects the atmosphere but enriches the soil, making it more fertile.Busch says the plants will also be more resilient to climate-related threats, with an enhanced ability to hold water, resist pathogens, and tolerate stress"Gives us hope that we can make a huge impact; if we can develop crops that are better at storing carbon for longer and if these crops are adopted at a very large scale," said Busch.The initiative has received over million in grants, with the most recent boost from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos donating million. 2867

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A scathing grand jury report released Tuesday after a 2018 Northern California wildfire killed 85 people found that Pacific Gas & Electric officials repeatedly ignored warnings about its failing power lines, performed inadequate inspections to focus on profits and refused to learn from past catastrophes. The 92-page summary says PG&E's corporate culture elevated profits over safety and encouraged shortcuts in delivering highly dangerous power. Company CEO Bill Johnson pleaded guilty on behalf of the nation's largest utility earlier Tuesday to 84 felony counts of involuntary manslaughter. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- When the pandemic hit city leaders opened the San Diego Convention Center doors to house those living on the streets. But as that time will soon come to an end, the San Diego Rescue Mission is working to give those in need a safe place to stay.The transition during the pandemic was not easy.“For people experiencing homelessness, the rates of COVID have been very low, but it was absolutely a struggle,” says Paul Armstrong with the San Diego Rescue Mission.The City of San Diego recently announced its plan to close the convention center by December. The state has reserved funds to help the city buy at least one hotel to house the homeless. Unfortunately, the hotel’s 340 units won’t be enough space for everyone.“As they ramp down their operations there, we have to be mindful to make sure we’re giving as many opportunities to the people in the convention center,” says Armstrong.The San Diego Rescue Mission is stepping in to help. Team members visit the convention center a few times during the week to notify the people of their programs.Their emergency shelter is available for women and children.They also have a year-long “Mission Academy.” It’s a three-semester program. Semester one focuses on wellness. Semester two is center around education and training.“Semester three is really preparing them, letting them focus on housing and building up,” says Armstrong. “Working and building up that savings so that they can transfer into a successful, sustainable life.”The Rescue Mission says they have seen a large success rate from the students who have completed Mission Academy. 1617

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Today is the peak travel day for the Thanksgiving holiday. AAA expects more than 54 million Americans to travel more than 50 miles from home this season. While many are dreading the drive, others have chosen to take the rails.Gary Green was visiting his friend in San Diego for the last few days. But he is making the trip back to Los Angeles on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. "The car is a painful experience. The 405 is obnoxious. The 101 is obnoxious. People are miserable, and it's the wrong time of year for that," Green said. While motorists are thankful that gas is about <云转化_句子>.25 / gallon cheaper than a month ago, lower gas prices, mean more drivers are on the roads. Jessica Windell said she is not taking any chances on missing family time. "Especially with all the crazy fires going on lately, there are a lot of closures. So I think the train is just kind of a straight shot," Windell said. She lives walking distance from San Diego's Santa Fe station, and the train will take her into Burbank.According to Amtrak, last year,  Santa Fe Station saw a 57% increase in riders the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and a 55% increase the Sunday following the holiday. "We're actually using every available fleet possible to accommodate all of our extra passengers," Amtrak spokesperson, Olivia Irvin said. That means every seat, including coach class requires a reservation. Even with a strict timetable, Amtrak admits, they are not perfect. If they experience delays, the company notifies passengers on Twitter. Earlier we saw announcements ranging from 20 to 48 minutes delay. Anything more than that, they say they have a Plan B."We often give passengers food packs and water," Irvin said. "If it's necessary, we'll bring in bus services to accommodate passengers."The hope is it never gets to that point.
