SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new scam appears to target local Amazon customers worried about being victims of package theft.Neighbors at the Escala community in Mission Valley say package thefts have been an ongoing problem for the last few years.Could the trend be providing fuel for a scam? A recent encounter at the housing complex could point to a new method by scammers.Adriana Alberdi, who has lived at the complex for a decade, said she and other residents received an email from the property management company describing a recent visitor.According to the email, the man — described as blond and in his early 20s — was wearing a lanyard connected to a tablet. He had business cards and claimed to work at Amazon. At one point, the man went to the on-site office pushing to install an Amazon Key device in homes. The new service allows Amazon to gain access to a home or car to deliver packages and keep them from getting stolen. The email says the man was "pushy" and "argumentative," before finally leaving. Amazon confirmed the man was not an employee."It's like you're getting robbed of your security. You don't know who to trust anymore," said Alberdi. "This is new. I have never heard about this."Amazon says their employees don't go door-to-door. Anyone interested in Amazon Key has to contact the company by phone or through their website. 1354

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new WalletHub report found that California is among the least affordable states in the country to raise a family. Among the 50 states, California ranked last for housing affordability, 47th for median family salary (adjusted for cost of living) and 42nd for child care cost. The Golden State may not be so golden for a decent percentage of families as it also ranked 29th for percentage of families in poverty. But it’s not all bad news, California also ranked 12th for families with young kids and 11th for its separation and divorce rate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man says his car was stolen while he was picking up a delivery order from a Subway in Clairemont. Luis Riveramerced said he was working for Postmates, a food delivery app, on Tuesday when he stopped at the Subway in Clairemont Town Square.“All I had to do is grab the bag and take off,” he said.So he felt comfortable leaving his car running, expecting to be in and out in a few seconds.“If I know it’s pick-up only, then I'll let my car run. I’ll just grab it,” he said. But while he was inside, he noticed part of the order was missing. As he was waiting for the order to be fixed, surveillance video captured a man peeking into the store, getting in his car and driving away.“I was like wow,” he remembered thinking when he went back outside. “I wasn’t expecting somebody to jump in my car right in front of me and take off like that.”He called the police but by the time they got there, the driver was long gone.“You put a little bit of trust and now I will never do that again,” said Riveramerced.A Navy veteran, he said he’d been working for Postmates for a few weeks. He is now using his mom’s car to continue delivering orders.Anyone with information is urged to contact the San Diego Police Department. 1239

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A researcher at the San Diego Museum of Natural History helped identify a new species of dinosaur, which was just added to the Anatomical Record.Dr. Ashley Poust made the discovery 10 years ago while on a research trip to China."There were a couple of features that immediately stood out to me, made me thing maybe we have something new here," he says.Dr. Poust says the shape of the skull and the presence of two long, decorative tail feathers made him think this was a new species."There's not any other dinosaurs that aren't birds, that we know of, who have long feathers like that," he says.Dr. Poust named the dinosaur "Wulong Bohaiensis." The word Wulong means "Dancing Dragon" in Chinese. The other part of the name comes from the area where it was found.A find like this helps fill in the gaps in how dinosaurs and birds evolved differently. Dr. Poust says Wulong was only about 1 year old when it died. That means it grew those long feathers much earlier than birds typically do. He thinks they could be functional, or it shows a major difference between dinosaurs and birds."You can't really answer those questions in California, but you can answer those questions in a place like China," says Dr. Poust.According to a release, the dinosaur was an early relative of the Velociraptor. It lived 120 million years ago and would have been about the size of a crow or raven.Dr. Poust says he's excited to share the new species with the world. The skeleton is on display at the Dalian Museum in China. It likely will not come to San Diego, as the specimen is too delicate for such a long journey. 1628
