SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Almost a dozen gyms retained a lawyer, preparing for a fight to stay open against San Diego County's health orders.Monday Governor Gavin Newsom announced a long list of businesses needed to close down again, due to a spike in coronavirus cases.That list includes:places of worship restaurants wineries movie theatersfamily entertainment centerszoos museums cardroomsfitness centerssalonsmalls.Metroflex Gym in Oceanside has been open since May despite the health orders. Owner Lou Uridel said this renewed push to close puts them in a corner and if they close, they won't reopen."We have only one plan, that's to stay open, we don't have the option to keep closing opening, closing opening." Uridel said they've been denied a dozen times for loans."I feel like it would be a betrayal of my faith and a betrayal of my dreams to give up on that and just close down," he said.Uridel said they're a place many find comfort, "we're continuing to get a lot of new gym members, we have stopped signing up people as of today." Uridel said they had to stop to ensure their members have access to the gym with the limited capacity imposed by the county's health orders.San Diego County announced this week they were putting together strike teams to ensure businesses in the list above shut down."It definitely doesn't scare us," he said.He said the laywer they hired found a loophole where the state health order was filed by the health department, and if they are not violating any health regulations they cannot be closed down.San Diego County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said they were just following the state's recommendations and those businesses need to shut down to protect the community and bring down coronavirus case numbers.Uridel said they are doing everything possible to create a healthy gym environment.He said they brought in a biologist to measure their air flow with their bay doors open and about a half dozen industrial fans in place.Uridel said their air flow rated 9.1/10.He said every gym member washes their hands on the way in and out, and wipe down their equipment. He said social distancing is in place and there is more cleaning each hour.He said if the county comes after them, "all we can really do is take it in the chin, whatever they're going to throw at us. If they're going to fine us, we'll fight it in court."When asked if he was worried about his staff or members getting sick, he said "it's always a concern, but it's a concern at any business, even the ones that remain open. If you check around, a lot of cases have come out of Home Depot, and grocery stores and there hasn't been one blink to close any of those down."He says his gym is a place of healing, helping military members fight PTSD and others work through the trauma of the coronavirus.Uridel said one man who lost his wife to suicide and faced other challenges is a regular at his gym. "When he told me this is what saved his life again," Uridel said emotionally, "it just made me realize that's exactly what we have to do."He wants to keep the doors open to provide that haven during this hard time. 3129

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About 90 dogs are heading across the country to San Diego to remove them from the path of Hurricane Delta in Louisiana.The dogs will land at Gillespie Field on Thursday as part of the effort to evacuate the animals before the storm hits the northern Gulf Coast, according to the San Diego Humane Society. Once they touch down in San Diego, 60 dogs will be taken to SDHS and the rest will be taken to Rancho Coastal Humane Society, the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, the Department of Animal Services, and Labradors and Friends. Once the dogs are medically cleared and behaviorally assessed, they will be made available for adoption."We are grateful we can help these animals and alleviate some of the stress on the shelters in Louisiana," said SDHS President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman. "They are just recovering from Hurricane Laura and now there is an even bigger threat. When we all work together, we can help more animals and that’s what we are here for."The flight is made possible by the nonprofit Wings Of Rescue, which helps fly endangered pets from high intake or high-kill shelters to no-kill shelters.Last month, SDHS, RCHS, and Labrador and Friends took in 130 dogs and cats from Louisiana as well."An animal emergency is an animal emergency, no matter where or when it happens,” said Rancho Coastal Humane Society President Judi Sanzo. “Hurricane-ravaged Louisiana called for help — just weeks after the last airlift brought more than a hundred animals to San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A school bus crashed into a San Diego Center for Children dormitory Wednesday afternoon, creating a massive hole in the side of the building.Officials say a San Diego Unified School District bus driver lost control of the bus on the 3000 block of Armstrong Street, causing the bus to collide with the building.No children were inside the building or the bus at the time of the crash. The bus driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution.Contractors have responded to the scene of the crash to assess the damage to the building. Officials with the center say all eight rooms in the dormitory are unusable following the incident. 659

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Among the safety measures schools are now employing is a device invented by a retired San Diego teacher that was never designed for the use.Rick Morris taught elementary school for three decades before leaving to focus on books to help educators with inventions.In 2005, Morris designed the Lock Blok, an updated version of a device he invented in the 80s. Applied with an adhesive, a rubber tab is affixed to the door and can be pushed out, again acting like a stopper. It was designed to cut down on noisy door slams in class.Morris says after the Columbine shooting, schools started using the Lock Blok for safety.  Most class doors have to be locked from the outside. With Morris' invention, teachers could just keep the door locked all day, even with the Lock Blok engaged. In an active shooter situation, the tab is pulled back, while the door shuts and is automatically locked.Security experts tell us during a true emergency, fine motor reflexes becomes tested. If a teacher has to go outside and try to lock the door with a key, it could take precious seconds.  Over the years, some 8000 Lock Blok units have been installed by local schools.  "My reaction is if this is helping to make a campus more secure, good for you, but don't put all your hope in one device. Security is bigger than that," said Morris.Morris doesn't market Lock Blok as a safety measure because it wasn't designed for protection, but after a November shooting rampage at a Northern California school, he can't forget the call he got from that district's superintendent."My wife and I teared up on that one ... If it saved one life, then it saves some parents from grieving," said Morris. 1731

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A similar Observation Wheel to those in England and Paris could come to Balboa Park for a short term stay.The Cohn Restaurant Group and Sky Views of America presented the idea of the Balboa Park Star to the Balboa Park Committee Meeting on October 1.They hope the wheel would attract more visitors and re-energize the park."We have operated these observation wheels during the pandemic," Vice President of Sky Views of America Ben Pickett said.The gondolas are enclosed and climate controlled. According to the presentation, they are sanitized after each ride and safety protocols comply with state, local and CDC guidelines. Masks would be required for passengers and staff. The presentation was met with excitement by the committee."I love the fact it is innovative and outside the box," Committee Member Victoria Curran said. "This is a terrific idea, I love it!" Committee Member Johanna Schiavoni added."Sometimes it's the craziest ideas that are the best ones," Committee Member Micah Parzen said. He cautioned there were concerns that needed to be worked out, like where and how much room the wheel would take up, if the wheel would take income away from competing museums and the juxtaposition of historic versus modern aesthetics.Pickett said they are working on promotions with the museums as well as discounts for families and military members.David Cohn compared the Balboa Park Star to the London Eye, La Grande Roue in Paris, or the Belfast Eye in Ireland.Most visitors at Balboa Park who spoke with ABC 10News like the idea."I think it would be super super cool, I would totally ride it," Visitor Erin Medina from Reno said excitedly."At first I thought, huh, seems more like a carnival than beautiful historic Balboa Park, but as you mentioned the Ferris wheel came here in 1915, so it might be kind of cool to bring it back, especially during the pandemic," San Diegan Clare Siragusa said.The R-50 is a modern wheel with gondolas that can seat eight people. The cost is estimated - per rider and tickets would be sold online and at the attraction.The proposed location is in the Plaza de Panama, near the Museum of Art."Anything that's for the kids, anything that's kind of easy, accessible entertainment, I support," San Diegan Samantha Pearson said.Entertainment at 148 feet in the air, just 52 feet short of the California Tower.The next presentation will be for the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Board October 28.
