LANZHOU/BEICHUAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- After living through major tragedies, such as the Wenchuan Earthquake that claimed over 68,000 lives and the Zhouqu mudslides that left 1,400 dead, the new semester starting Wednesday may bring a much-needed sense of normality to the affected students.Senior high schoolers of the mudslides-hit Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, began a new semester on a usual date, Sept. 1, which is the first day of school in many parts of China, but at a place 400 km south of Zhouqu, the provincial capital of Lanzhou.After the county was hit by massive mudslides on Aug. 8, two primary schools were damaged and high schools are now being used by these pupils. So high schoolers, altogether more than 3,000, were transferred to four schools in Lanzhou and Dingxi City."The new dormitory has everything -- bed sheets, tooth brushes, slippers, toilet paper, you name it", said Wang Wentian, whose house was destroyed. Fortunately, her family was not at home when the mudslides struck.Another student, Guo Xiangban, lost several loved ones in the mudslides. "I still feel sad when I am alone. But the past is the past and I have to move on with my life," said Guo.On the same day, students of the newly-built Beichuan High School, where over 1,000 students were killed after two school buildings collapsed during the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, also started their new semester."I have never been in a school so beautiful. There is even a bathroom in our dorm," said Qiao Qi, a senior high student at Beichuan.The new school, covering an area of 15 hectares, can accommodate 5,200 students. Before the school was built, students, like nomads, had studied during the past two years in tents, then makeshift classrooms.Sitting in a wheelchair, Guo Dongmei looked at the bustling sports field where her schoolmates could not wait to try out the new sports equipment, such as the parallel bars.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday vowed to enhance coordination with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to continuously push forward the reform of the global economic and financial systems. "Currently the world economy is recovering slowly, but the outlook still remains uncertain," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said while meeting with visiting IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn in Beijing.To completely get over the global financial crisis and realize sustainable development requires the international community to follow a path for mutual benefits and common development, face up to what caused the financial crisis and step up reform of the global economic and financial systems, he added.Praising China's counter measures against the crisis as "correct", Strauss-Kahn said the IMF values China's position and role and would like to build closer ties with the country.He called on countries to help one another to consolidate the growth momentum of the world economy.In an earlier meeting with Strauss-Kahn, Vice Premier Wang Qishan urged timely adjustments to global economic rules and standards to keep pace with the development of the global economy."The developing countries and emerging economies should have more say in the process," he added.He said the international community should work closely to ensure a success of the upcoming G20 Seoul Summit.In response, Strauss-Kahn said the IMF would continue to strengthen cooperation with China and increase the country's representation and voice in the organization.

ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Saturday, kicking off his three-day official visit to Greece.The Greece visit, the first stop of Wen's four-nation Europe tour, is the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.During his stay, Premier Wen is due to meet Greek President Karolos Papoulias and Parliament Speaker Philippos Petsalnikos and hold talks with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou before witnessing the signing of a series of deals. Wen will also deliver a speech in the Greek parliament on China-Greece and China-EU relations."Coping with the financial crisis will be an important topic for talks between Wen and Greek leaders. We have a positive attitude about the measures taken by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said earlier on Wen's Greece visit. Greece's sovereign debt crisis triggered fears of a domino effect across the eurozone earlier this year."We have noticed that the Greek government has adopted measures which have been effective. We hope Greece will recover soon from the difficulties," Fu said.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan said: "Once again, the premier will send a clear signal to the world that China will give a vote of confidence in the economic prospects of Greece and that China is taking practical action to assist Greece and the European Union in overcoming the crisis."The four-nation visit, lasting till Oct. 9, will also take Wen to Belgium, Italy and Turkey. BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- China and Ukraine have agreed to boost economic and parliamentary cooperation after their leaders met in Beijing.Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych Friday."The pressing task is to identify major projects for cooperation and give full play to business, research and financial institutes," said Wen.Wu Bangguo (R), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, meets with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich (L) in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 3, 2010."By doing so, we will make headway in economic and technological cooperation and promote economic recovery and sustainable growth," he said.Yanukovych said his country hopes to fully utilize the cooperation committee at the vice-premier level they agreed upon to establish advanced cooperation in various fields.During his meeting with Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), Yanukovych discussed parliamentary exchange between the two countries."The documents signed between the two countries, including the joint statement, show the political willingness to boost parliamentary exchange," Yanukovych said.China hopes to enhance communication between parliamentary leaders and committees in legislature, supervision, trade and culture, Wu said.Yanukovych praised China's efforts maintaining reform, development and stability, saying his country looks forward to further discussions with China on governance.Yanukovych arrived in Beijing Thursday for a four-day state visit and has so far witnessed the signing of a joint statement to upgrade friendly cooperative relations in a comprehensive way.According to an agreement signed by the two sides, Chinese companies will undertake the construction of a 950-million-U.S.-dollar city rail line in Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine.Yanukovych will fly to Shanghai Saturday to attend the 2010 World Expo.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Floods and landslides due to heavy downpours brought by typhoon Fanapi have claimed 33 lives in south China's Guangdong Province, while another 42 remain missing, local authorities said Wednesday.Meanwhile, more than 1 million people were affected and 78,400 people in low-lying areas were forced to be evacuated, the provincial flood control headquarters said in a statement.In addition, rainstorms and and geological disasters have destroyed more than 1,400 homes and inundated more than 30,000 hectares of cropland, the statement said.Direct economic losses were estimated at about 2 billion yuan (300 million yuan), it said.Some areas in Guangdong reported precipitation of over 640 mm in 24 hours, it said.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon to hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.No casualties have been reported in Fujian.
