SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As Governor Gavin Newsom orders seven California counties to close bars to stop the spread of coronavirus, San Diego County made that same decision on their own and now, some San Diego bars are trying to figure out how to stay open to save their future.Related: San Diego County to close bars that don't serve food ahead of July 4 to slow COVID-19 spreadThe directive from the county states that bars, wineries and breweries have to close by July 1 if they don’t serve food. There is an exception for businesses like rural wineries that have dominantly outdoor, spread out seating. For the food rule, a bag of chips does not count. An outline of the rules states businesses have to offer a sit down, dine-in meal and any alcohol purchased has to be on the same transaction of the meal. The co-owners of Carriage House Lounge said they don’t meet this requirement, but they’re brainstorming ways to add food so they can stay open.“Now we gotta close again? At least if we can open a little bit with some food, maybe we can make enough to pay the rent anyway so we don’t get deeper behind,” said Andrew Haines.Haines said he and his business partner Rachel Dymond been back open for less than three weeks before this second closure. During that span when they were open between closures, they barely hit 50% for sales, which has been enough to pay rent and paychecks, but not bring in a profit. They said they can’t consider a second closure, so they’re talking about bringing in catering or partnering with a local restaurant to have food and be able to stay open. They’re not alone in this plan.Chad Cline has ownership in multiple San Diego bars and restaurants, which he says have also been hurting financially through the last three months. He said his businesses that don’t serve food are also going to now have a food option so they can meet new regulations and be able to stay open. Cline said he doesn’t agree with the thought process behind the new law.“I don’t think any rational person is going to be able to wrap their head around the difference between going to a table and having a drink and then going to that same table and having a drink and a hamburger and the second trip is okay but the first trip is not okay,” said Cline. When asked why the food distinction was made, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said bars lead to impaired judgement which can impact carefulness, people spend more time in bars, the loud setting requires people to yell which can spread droplets and the congregating makes contact tracing more difficult.Cline said they’ll follow the rules but he isn’t happy with the leaders who made this decision.“We just play the game and go okay we have to serve food so we’ll serve food, but if I’m being completely clear it is kind of a game at this point because we’re just trying to exist and we just have to figure out how to follow the guidelines,” said Cline. 2922

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Monday morning Escondido Police provided extra police patrols at a local mosque that was targeted on Sunday.Police say the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque on 6th Avenue was set on fire by an arsonist that has yet to be identified.Worshipers inside the mosque noticed the flames around 3 a.m. on Sunday and were able to put them out before the fire could spread.Lt. Chris Lick with the Escondido Police Department said once police and arson investigators arrived, they determined that the fire was set intentionally. They also found a note left by the suspect.“Graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the shooting incident in New Zealand,” said Lt. Lick. The San Diego Police Department has also stepped up patrols at mosques across the city in response the incident in Escondido.San Diego's Anti-Defamation League issued a statement in support of the mosque and worshippers.“This attack appears to be meant to send a signal to the Muslim community” said ADL Regional Director Tammy Gillies. “Sadly, this type of behavior is consistent with the growth in hate crimes, rise in attacks on Muslims, and the surge in anti-Muslim bigotry that we have seen in our country and around the world.”A crowdfunding campaign was launched to help raise money to provide repairs and proper security at the mosque in Escondido. The campaign has received support from people across the country. od safety and the coronavirus diseaseOn Monday, the FDA approved Hologic's clinical trials for Emergency Use Authorization. Since then, they have shipped hundreds of thousands of their test kits to their clients, including local hospitals, laboratories, public health systems, and the Department of Defence, for testing military personnel.“What you’ll see is something like this," Thornal held a small vile. "This is just a small vile that has a nasal swab that looks like a Q-tip. And that will be put up your nose, and they’ll put it into a vile this and send it off to the lab. Their machines can test up to 1,000 samples in a day, and results come out in about three hours. RELATED: UC San Diego, manufacturers increase COVID-19 testing capacityUnlike early manual-style tests, Thornal said Hologic's automated kits take out the possibility of human error. Plus, everything from research and development to production happens here. “The test was invented by scientists that live here right here in San Diego," Thornal. "And right now, our operations team right here off of Mira Mesa Boulevard, that’s where all of this manufacturing is occurring, is shipping out from here to the globe.”Hologic said their goal is to send out 600,000 test kits per month, worldwide by April. 2416

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - An East County woman was devastated to find out the money she spent to buy a new cat likely went to con artists.“I just felt like I lost my sense of love for humanity,” Suzi Moon told Team 10. Moon’s Maine Coon cat, Teka, recently passed away. She was 15-years-old and a longtime member of her family.“He was the best cat ever,” Moon said. When he died, she was heartbroken.“I was in an emotional mode,” Moon said. “I wanted to get another one because I just was so used to that cat.”Moon searched online and found a website that advertised pure Maine Coone cats. She emailed the website and got a response. “They emailed me back and this cat that I saw on the website was a gray cat. Beautiful,” she said. She also spoke to someone on the phone, who sounded legitimate. The man asked her questions, such as whether or not she was having the cat indoors and if she was declawing the cat. Moon eventually scraped up 0 and sent the money through Zelle, something she now regrets. The day the supposed seller was supposed to ship the cat to her, he asked for more money for a special crate. “We need to have you cash app, send ,000 more,” Moon said. After back and forth with the seller and refusing to pay more, Moon said they eventually blocked her number. The 0 she paid was gone. The website, puremainecoons.com, is no longer active. Team 10 found the website on petscams.com, a site that bills itself as a pet watchdog website. The Better Business Bureau said pets are the top scam when it comes to online purchases. The average loss is 0. Moon wanted to share her mistake with others in hopes nobody else falls victim to this scam.“I just felt violated. There [are] people out there taking advantage like that. It’s disgusting,” Moon said.Team 10 called the person Moon said she spoke with about the cat. That man hung up before answering any questions. The BBB suggests do not buy a pet without seeing it in person. The organization also recommends conducting an internet search of the photo. If you see the same picture on different websites, it could be fraud. 2112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Thanksgiving is just four days away, and preparations are already underway for the 17th Annual Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving 5K Run.Proceeds from the race and festivities go toward the one million meals the organization serves to those who need it every year. One of the biggest draws of the event is the pie made by the organization’s Culinary Arts program students. The students are making 300 pumpkin pies, 200 apple pies, and 100 blueberry pies ahead of the race, possibly more if they get additional pre-orders. The pies are served the day before Thanksgiving at the shelter downtown. The pies are also sold at Balboa Park on race day."These are individuals who come to us and were homeless and now we're trying to get them up on their feet,” Deacon Joe Vargas, President of Father Joe’s Villages, said. The students were once homeless but decided that cooking would help get them out of poverty. They are part of a 14-week intensive program, where 92% of graduates get jobs in the field.10News met Dorothea Sontag, a disabled Air Force Veteran, who was once a volunteer at Father Joe’s. When times got tough, she sought help from them."After my husband died, I hit hard times,” Sontag said. She lived out of her van until Father Joe’s took her in. Now at 62 years old, the former nurse's aid has a new aspiration. "I have a brother who's chef in Connecticut, so maybe it's in our blood,” Sontag laughed. Her instructor Theresa Fields said she is proud of Sontag for always pursuing perfection in the dishes she prepares. "They get a sense of pride that you can see on their face. They just glow,” Fields said. "I see too many people who are disabled and they let their disability rule them. I rule my disability. I make sure I can keep doing things,” Sontag said. Pies cost if you pre-order them HERE by 11:59 pm on November 18, 2018. At the race, they are .This year, Father Joe's is selling pumpkin-flavored dog treats for . 2031
