SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Construction is underway on upgrades to Pacific Beach Middle School. The campus will get a new 2-story building, featuring 26 state-of-the-art classrooms, as part of a "Whole School Modernization" project.Other aspects of the project include renovations to the existing cafeteria and library media enter, as well as a new HVAC system for the auditoriums and science classrooms."We'll have classrooms that represent 21st-century learning spaces," says SDUSD Facilities Communication Supervisor Samer Naji. "You're talking about flexible furniture so that the students and teachers can be creative with the way they use their spaces. You're talking about state of the art technology, voice amplification systems, smart boards that the teachers and students can all use."The administration offices will also be moved to a different part of campus, creating a more easily identifiable entryway for visitors."Right now it's a large priority for the campus that we have a secure entry," says Naji. "This ensures that, during the day when kids are in class, there's only one way in and one way out of campus."Security has been at the forefront of many SDUSD projects in the wake of school shootings across the country. District officials say they want to make sure all campuses only have a single entry for visitors. The new layout at PB Middle School will accomplish that goal.The building opened in 1931. Over the years, upgrades and expansions brought it to its current 13.8-acre footprint.Money for the project is coming from voter-approved Propositions S & Z. As part of the renovation, the current two-story library & classroom building will be torn down. Demolition begins in July. The work will be done in two phases, so the school can keep enough classrooms on site to accommodate students.Unfortunately, some of the murals on the current building will be lost in the demolition. The school's principal says they want to work with students and community members to design new murals for the new building.In 2017, SDUSD completed work on a new joint-use athletic field at the Middle School. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cara Knott's family has written a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom asking that Craig Peyer remain behind bars.In December 1986, Peyer -- then a California Highway Patrol officer -- pulled over Knott on Interstate 15 in the Rancho Penasquitos area. Peyer beat Knott, strangled her, and threw her body over a bridge.Peyer was eventually convicted of killing the 20-year-old San Diego State student in 1988.Peyer's next parole hearing isn't until 2027, but in their letter to the governor, Knott's family says they've learned inmates are being released from Peyer's prison because of COVID-19.“This is precisely NOT a person who deserves to be released early from prison for humanitarian reasons. Officer Peyer showed NO Mercy when he murdered my sister," Knott's sister wrote in her letter to the governor.ABC 10News reached out to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for clarification. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating after several people were injured following a chase involving Border Patrol agents in the South Bay Thursday night. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on westbound 905 near Caliente Avenue just after 5 p.m. CHP says agents stopped a vehicle when the car hit a Border Patrol vehicle and a big rig. At this time, it’s unclear what sparked the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As Santa Ana winds move out of the region, a freeze warning was issued for portions of San Diego County.The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for the county's valleys and deserts from midnight through 10 a.m. Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are investigating a car fire in Spring Valley that may possibly be linked to a fire that scorched part of a La Mesa hair salon less than half an hour before.At around 3:10 a.m. Monday, firefighters and sheriff’s Bomb/Arson investigators were called to the Slay Lounge on 8739 Broadway in La Mesa in response to a fire in a Dumpster.The fire caused some minor damage to the salon and some other businesses at the strip mall.Investigators discovered an object at the scene that may have sparked the blaze.Less than 30 minutes later, crews were called to an import auto car lot in the 9100 block of Campo Road in Spring Valley in response to a car on fire. One car was completely destroyed, and the flames damaged other nearby vehicles. Investigators are trying to determine if the car fire is somehow related to the Dumpster fire in La Mesa. No injuries were reported in either blaze. 921
