Vicki Wilkins of American University in Washington, D.C. had an idea: add more students to their classrooms during the partial government shutdown. “To give them a chance while furloughed to get some new skills, take a workshop get some networking in,” Wilkins says. The idea was to offer 12 free classes for those whose paychecks have been on hiatus since late last year. Classes include subjects like “Building Your Brand” and “Mindfulness in the Workplace.” Paul Bamonte, who works for the Department of Homeland Security, is one of those impacted by the shutdown. He, and hundreds of others attending the free classes, feels the stresses of the shutdown. "We all want to get back to work,” Bamonte says. “We all want to do what we signed up for.” Bamonte says things have been pretty frustrating the past couple of weeks. “It's hard to plan for anything in the future, for financial, for vacations, without an end state in place,” he says. “I think that's one of the main stress points.” He says events like free classes at American University are helping. “I try not to focus on it every day, because I come to events like this, so I can just forget about it for a while and get back to what’s more important--connecting with other people, connecting with colleagues, sharing ideas, doing some training and development, and refreshing your mind a little bit,” Bamonte says. Wilkins says giving the gift of added education is just their way of giving back. “I think it's fantastic that we can come together and help them, and this is just the part we can do,” Wilkins says. “Naturally, as a university, this is what we thought we could offer to federal employees so we wanted step in and do that part.” 1722

A kidnapping victim chewed through a telephone cord to escape captivity recently, according to police records. Phoenix police report that on August 23 a man, later identified as 54-year-old Michael Darrell Thorning went to a motel room near 51st Avenue and McDowell Road. He went to a room where the victim had allowed him to spend the night a few days prior due to the excessive heat. After using the phone, Thorning allegedly pulled a box cutter out and threatened the victim. They fought over the box cutter, but soon Thorning had the victim tied to a chair with a phone cord and blindfolded him. Thorning reportedly stole the victim's cash, debit card, and PIN. Thorning then withdrew 0 in cash from nearby ATMs, police say. According to court records, the victim "was able to free himself by chewing through a cord." He then went to the motel front desk for help. Police distributed pictures of Thorning taken from the ATM cameras to nearby businesses. A few days later police got a tip from a motel manager in the area, that Thorning was in their parking lot. Upon his arrest, Thorning allegedly admitted to tying up the victim, stealing his debit card and withdrawing money. He has been charged with kidnapping and robbery. 1250

A catering cart caused utter chaos at Chicago O'Hare International Airport Monday until an American Airlines employee saved the day.Dr. Kevin Klauer, an osteopathic physician, caught video of the cart's crazy circular ride on the tarmac while waiting for his flight to Tennessee."At first it was humorous to see this drive itself and not fall over, but then as it picked up speed it presented danger to people," Klauer told CNN.Video shows the cart spinning wildly in circles with food and trays scattered around it. Employees on the tarmac can be seen trying to approach the cart, but it's clear the cart is too out of control for them. It appears one employee was hit by the cart.As the cart continues to spin, it gets closer to the nose of an airplane until an employee in another vehicle crashed into the cart to avoid catastrophe."Everyone was actually really quietly watching this unfold," Klauer said. "When it ended, the whole gatehouse erupted in applause."American Airlines said in a statement that preliminary reports showed the cart's accelerator got stuck and caused the cart to lose control."No American Airlines team members were injured and the incident resulted in one 10-minute flight delay," American Airlines said in a statement. "We appreciate the quick action of our team member who stopped the vehicle."Klauer uploaded the video on Twitter before his flight took off. By the time he landed in Knoxville, he said his phone had blown up with notifications from the thousands of notifications. 1525
