But the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla is moving forward with their 20-21 performance season. From Grammy nominated singers to comedians they have found a way to kickoff their year"Our Arts and Ideas season brings performers and intellectuals from a diversity of backgrounds, talents, and passions to share the arts with everyone, " says JCC board member Laurie Greenberg. "Which is incredibly important at this time." And for the first time, the JCC's cultural season will be all virtual."I think it's incredibly important because the arts broaden horizons, they give us new experiences. They give a little bit of an escape which we all need right now. It's really important that we can offer this arts and ideas season, as well as our other arts, and cultural programming to the community right now."And one of the great things about the new season, is it's being offered for free."What we're hoping to do is have this season entirely under written so that we're able to offer the entire season without charge. While at the same time. still be able to bring high quality performers, who will give us new experiences and new connections .It's really through the generosity of our donors."The Arts and Ideas season runs from October through June. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Scripps affiliate KSHB-TV had a photographer's camera rolling as a tornado touched down north of Salina, Kansas Tuesday evening.Meteorologist Gerard Jebaily was out in a Stormtracker vehicle tracking a storm cell in central Kansas. Just when it seemed like the fury surrounding the chaplain?for the US House of Representatives was over.As House members were wrapping up votes Tuesday night, a remarkably heated exchange erupted on the floor, with one congressman shouting, aggressively pointing his finger, and -- at one point -- banging his fist on a table as he sharply criticized another member.Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley of New York attempted to offer a resolution to form a committee to investigate the forced resignation of the Rev. Pat Conroy, the House chaplain. Crowley, a Catholic, made a similar motion last month?after questions arose over the resignation.As his resolution was in the process of being tabled due to GOP opposition on Tuesday, Republican Rep. Tom MacArthur of New Jersey walked over to Crowley on the Democratic side of the House floor and accused him of "politicizing" the chaplain controversy."I just walked up afterward and said 'Joe.' He turned. I said, 'You need to let go of this,'" MacArthur later told reporters.After a few more words were exchanged, Crowley, a towering 6'5'' figure whose face turned red with anger, grew visibly upset and could be heard from across the room shouting that he was "offended" by the chaplain incident."I'm not the one politicizing this," Crowley yelled, loud enough to be overheard by a handful of reporters sitting in the press gallery above the House floor."The speaker is politicizing this," he shouted, a reference to House Speaker Paul Ryan's office having requested Conroy resign in the first place.Recalling the incident, MacArthur said that Crowley "ordered" him to go back to the Republican side of the floor, to which MacArthur objected."In New Jersey, we don't back down from people," MacArthur said. "This is a guy who wants to be speaker and he's so thin-skinned that he can't take criticism from another member of Congress? I think that speaks for itself."Things appeared to calm down quickly and Crowley could be seen laughing and joking around with colleagues soon after. Crowley, who's widely seen as friendly and mild-mannered among Democrats, was not available for comment. His spokeswoman acknowledged that the two men got into a heated conversation but argued there was no escalation.Earlier Thursday, the House chaplain was re-appointed to his position?so that he could remain chaplain after he rescinded his resignation last week and it was accepted by Ryan. Tensions have run high as members of parties questioned why Ryan requested the chaplain to resign last month. Following the outcry, Conroy rescinded his resignation and accused Ryan's chief of staff of suggesting to him "maybe it's time that we had a Chaplain that wasn't a Catholic" -- an allegation Ryan's chief of staff denied.Ryan accepted Conroy's decision to stay and said Tuesday morning -- before the evening's heated exchange -- that he had confidence the chamber could move past the issue."We talked about how to improve the services going forward," Ryan said during his weekly news conference. "We're going to keep talking. I think we can ultimately make improvements so that everybody has access to the pastoral services they're looking for." 3208

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Schlitterbahn Waterpark co-owner Jeff Henry has been arrested on charges related to the death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab. Henry is charged with murder, 12 counts of aggravated battery and five counts of aggravated child endangerment.Henry was taken into custody in Texas and is currently being held by the U.S. Marshal Service.In a statement Monday afternoon, the company said it was not surprised at the charges against Henry."We as a company and as a family will fight these allegations and have confidence that once the facts are presented it will be clear that what happened on the ride was an unforeseeable accident," the statement read.Last week, several criminal charges were filed against Tyler A. Miles, a former assistant park manager, and the company itself. Those included felony involuntary manslaughter, 12 counts of aggravated battery and five counts of aggravated child endangerment.Schlitterbahn and attorneys for Miles released separate statements saying they intended to fight the charges.  1072

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A mother is outraged after seeing a photo of her 7-month-old son tied up in a sleep sack at day care.Tanya, who asked her last name not be used because of her job with the government, said she got phone call from the Kansas Department of Children and Families (DCF) in late March. The department told her it was investigating a report involving a photo of her son at Miss Anne's Daycare in Leavenworth, Kansas.The DCF worker couldn’t send her the photo, so Tanya drove directly to the DCF offices in Leavenworth.“It was a picture of him in a sleep sack with his arms bound down and the sleeves of the sleep sack tied to the back with a ponytail holder, and he was laid face down with his face pretty much in the corner,” she said, shaking. Tayna drove directly from the DCF office that day to the day care, picked up her son, and he hasn’t been back.Tanya said she’s not really an emotional person, but the situation has been difficult.“You know, I was in the military for 22 years. I don’t shake easily…” she said. “This shook me to my core.”She wasn’t the only person to get a phone call.Deirdre Engle said she got a call, too. Someone had reported her daughter, Elora, being put down the same way — in a sleep sack, face down, with the sack pulled tight with a hair band. Engle said DCF had a photo and was investigating. “First, I thought there's no way that's my baby, she looks so small! She's laying on her tummy like she always does, but she looks uncomfortable. She's tied up. My baby is tied up," Engle said in a phone call. "She can't roll over, she can't sit up, if she were to cough up any of her formula, she'd choke. I got scared for her. She's been at this day care since she was 5 weeks old. I've trusted these people for her entire life and I was wrong,” wrote Engle.Engle pulled her daughter from the day care March 27. She has not taken her child back to the facility.Another mother, Jennifer New, also got a call from DCF in late March. According to her, DCF assured New her daughter wasn’t in any photos they’d received, but they wanted her to check on things and report back.When reached for comment, Miss Anne's referred Scripps station KSHB to a statement they’d posted on Facebook earlier in the day on April 17.The Department of Children and Families said it could not comment specifically on investigations. However, DCF did say it follows the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that babies be put to sleep on their backs.The Kansas Department of Health and Environment released the following statementt:  2626
