A Bay View, Wisconsin, resident was surprised last month when he opened his federal stimulus check and found some numbers were missing. Clark Rendall found that his check that he said should have been ,200 was cut for just .60. With the high costs, 30 percent of guests are declining the wedding invite, because they simply can't afford to go. There may be additional costs for a new outfit or babysitting, and of course, a gift for the couple. It all adds up, and experts say not to go broke for a wedding. Wedding planner Lauren Smith, with Hour Glass Productions, says whether you attend or not, giving a gift is a must. "If it's a relationship that you want to continue with, you should still give them a gift,” Smith says. “If it’s someone [who’s] ‘ehh’ and we probably aren't going to talk or see them again, then don't give a gift," Smith suggests. But how much should you spend? Most experts say it depends on your relationship with the couple. Smith says whatever you think the meal costs. "Plated meals cost more. Buffets cost a little less, and if you go to a food truck wedding, it’s even less than that," she says. While cash used to be frowned upon for some, Smith and recent bride Sarah Valencia say money is a great gift. "They just gave us money for our honeymoon fund, which was awesome,” says Valencia. “And maybe it was , , or whatever, but it was fine with us." The coveted crash test ratings for vehicles are in desperate need of an update, according to multiple auto safety groups. The system hasn't been updated since 2010. Right now, 98% of all vehicles get four or five stars. “It’s the equivalent of Halloween — everyone gets candy,” says Jason Levine with the Center for Auto Safety. “The idea is supposed to be separating between things that are safe and things that are really safe.” Levine says the tests are too easy to pass and they don't help consumers understand the difference between cars.Some recommendations include updating the ratings by testing new technology that helps drivers avoid crashes, like emergency automatic braking, and accounting for how passengers in the rear seats are impacted Experts also recommend testing systems that help avoid hitting pedestrians. This type of testing already exists, it just hasn't been mandated in the U.S. “NHSTA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has dragged its feet on renewing these ratings for almost a decade now,” Levine says. “They said they were going to update them in 2015. They didn't. They said they were going to update them in 2018 and they didn't. Here we are, we just saw a press release of NHSTA saying we'll do something in 2020 but they haven't even really explained what that is.” Advocates also say there's a need to update crash test dummies to reflect changes we've seen in drivers, like weight, height and age.Auto safety groups would like to see a silver star added for older drivers to better understand how a car might protect them in a crash. 1604

The government shutdown is flying into dangerous territory, according to several aviation leaders. The largest pilot union says the shutdown "is adversely affecting the safety, security and efficiency of our national airspace system." The National Air Traffic Controllers Association is also warning the shutdown is rapidly eliminating safety layers "in a system that has no room for error." “We're always worried about any kind of hiccup in the system,” says James Marinitti, with the association. “We're doing this interview. We can do a second take. We can do a third take. But for air traffic controllers, you only get one take. They work in a mistake-free environment, where we are expected to be right 100 percent of the time.” Right now, 3,000 support staff have been told not to come to work, which means fewer safety inspectors. That could lead to delay in repairing equipment, like a broken light on the runway that helps guide pilots and other equipment repairs.“Radar, preventative maintenance, these types of things that will get delayed as the shutdown continues, because the workers are not there to keep the system healthy,” Marinitti says. The shutdown is hitting air traffic controllers especially hard because of a 30-year low staffing shortage. They're not only understaffed, but they’re also currently working without pay and it's unknown when they'll get their next check. “The bills haven't come, yet, to be a problem, but we know that's there in the back of our heads,” says air traffic controller Alex Navarro. “And as the day goes on and the shutdown, it's getting more pronounced, so we're worried about it.
