HOUSTON (AP) — The Trump administration is detaining immigrant children as young as 1 in hotels before deporting them to their home countries. Documents obtained by The Associated Press show a private contractor hired by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is taking children to three Hampton Inns in Arizona and Texas under restrictive border policies implemented during the coronavirus pandemic. The hotels have been used nearly 200 times, while more than 10,000 beds for children sit empty at government shelters. Federal anti-trafficking laws and a two-decade-old court settlement that governs the treatment of migrant children require that most kids be sent to the shelters for eventual placement with family sponsors. But President Donald Trump’s administration is now immediately expelling people seeking asylum in the U.S., relying on a public health declaration to set aside those rules.Lawyers and advocates say housing unaccompanied migrant children in hotels exposes them to the risk of trauma as they’re detained in places not designed to hold them and cared for by contractors with unclear credentials. They are challenging the use of hotels as detention spaces under the Flores court settlement.Federal immigration authorities say the contractors caring for the kids are “non-law enforcement staff members trained to work with minors.”Hilton, which owns the Hampton Inn brand, said in a statement Tuesday that all three hotels were franchises and it believed rooms were booked directly with those owners. (KGTV) - What a difference books can make for the learning and growth of a child. 10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt returned to Imperial Beach Charter School, where students can’t get enough of reading. Nine months ago, they were surprised with a donation of 1,800 books, made by 10News employees and the Scripps Howard Foundation. Each child was able to select two books of their own, with the rest going to the library and classrooms. “Last year, I didn't like to read. But this year I love to read," said 7-year-old Diego. His favorite book is "Hoot Hoot".“It's about owls. They're having a little party," he said.Seven-year-old Adriana loves the adventure of a good book. “My favorite thing about reading is you can imagine stuff while you're reading the book," she said. Her favorite book is "My Weird School". Principal Melissa Griffith says the books have made all the difference to students.“The opportunity for them to learn sounds, to learn words, to take adventures within books, there's really nothing like it and it's so beneficial for our students," said Griffith. “Our students enjoy the books greatly. (KGTV) — Wednesday, Imperial Beach city leaders unanimously approved a one-cent sale tax measure for the November ballot.The city says, if enacted, the measure would, "enable the City to prepare for medical or catastrophic emergencies including preparing local first responder services, updating emergency communication systems and maintaining rapid 911 emergency response capacity."The potential one-cent sales tax increase would also support restoring the city's long-term emergency funding that is being used to address the coronavirus pandemic."Even through these challenging times, the City must continue to address challenges with clean, safe neighborhoods and addressing homelessness to maintain Imperial Beach as a quality community to live, work and raise a family for all residents," said Assistant City Manager, Erika Cortez-Martinez.The measure includes accountability and transparency requirements, including public disclosure of spending and independent audits, the city says.If approved it would go into effect in the spring of 2021. 1079
