SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County law enforcement officials have joined together to decry the death of a black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck until he passed out.Friday, San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore was the latest official to issue a statement, saying "we must do better" on Twitter."Now, as frustrating as it may be, we must let the criminal justice system run its course. The men and women of the San Diego Sheriff's Department hold ourselves to a very high standard and work everyday to build trust with the communities we serve. Mr. Floyd's death in Minneapolis is a harsh reminder of how the actions of a few can quickly erode that trust," the sheriff wrote.RELATED: La Mesa officer in arrest video placed on leave, pending investigationEarlier this week, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit also issued a statement echoing the same call for departments to "do better.""The SDPD expresses its sincere condolences to the family of George Floyd. Our profession must do better," Nisleit wrote. "We will continue to work tirelessly to build trust, establish clear policies, ensure consistent training, and maintain open and honest dialogue with our communities."RELATED: Prosecutor: Officer laid on George Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutesChula Vista's Police Chief Roxana Kennedy added, in part, that "we recognize that law enforcement must continually foster a professional culture that prioritizes compassion and care for human life. While I hope and pray an incident like this would never occur in Chula Vista, it is important to openly acknowledge examples of police misconduct so that we remain vigilant in the course of our work."Floyd's death sparked mass protests across the nation and riots in Minneapolis this week. RELATED: Officer who knelt on George Floyd's neck has been charged with his murderThe officer seen in witness video of the arrest, Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, has been fired, arrested, and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in connection with Floyd's death. Three colleagues who stood by as Chauvin held Floyd to the ground for nearly 9 minutes have also been fired. 2171

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents at Aquatera Apartments in Mission Valley say they are upset about how managers handled notifying them about a violent attack in their complex. Many residents saw police cars parked at Aquatera for much of the day on Sept. 4. An email from the management company was not sent notifying residents until Monday.Aquatera spokesperson Margie Newman confirms to 10News that a resident was assaulted on the premises. She says the resident went to Aquatera staff for help. Staff immediately called police. Newman says a suspect was arrested within the hour. Because the threat to residents was ended so quickly, the decision was made to gather more information before notifying other residents. "Our team simply wanted to get it right. The threat was passed. The perpetrator was caught within the hour, so we wanted to make sure that what we were sharing was the most accurate information," Newman said.Several residents told 10News they asked Aquatera staff what had happened and were not given answers. Monday, a resident checked the Crimemapping.com website, which aggregates police report data from the San Diego Police Department. It listed a rape at the Aquatera address at noon on the 4th. The resident contacted Aquatera management to ask why residents hadn't been notified about a sexual assault five days prior. A few hours later is when the email went out to residents, saying an assault had taken place and an arrest made. The email also listed a number of steps residents could take to increase their personal safety."It's disturbing that it took five days, especially when our safety is concerned. Very disturbing," said a resident who identified herself as Lisa. "My husband is now in charge of walking the dogs at night. I have mace that I actually bought today. It's really sad that now we have to walk around armed." 1864

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and President Trump may have met in the Oval Office Tuesday, but their accounts of what was discussed differ.Faulconer visited the White House this week to discuss the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement and raise concerns over polluted water flowing in the Tijuana River Valley. Following the meeting, Faulconer confirmed the topics on Twitter, saying, "We talked about the pending #USMCA deal, California’s homeless crisis, and I also brought up sewage coming from the Tijuana River Valley – and encouraged more federal action to fix it."Though Wednesday night, the President told Fox News' Sean Hannity, another topic came up: "The wall."RELATED: Mayor Faulconer meets with President Trump to discuss issues facing San Diego“We just finished San Diego, as you know, San Diego, in California. They’re so happy. The mayor was just up in my office, great guy. He came up to thank me for having done the wall because it’s made such a difference. He said, it’s like day and night. He said people were flowing across and now nobody can come in,” Trump said. This didn't happen, Faulconer's director of communications, Craig Gustafson, says.“That’s not what Mayor Faulconer said. We all know that the President uses his own terminology. But that wasn’t the focus of their conversation," Gustafson said. "The President as an aside asked Mayor Faulconer what he thought about the border, and the Mayor’s response is that we welcome federal investment in our land ports of entry. We're the busiest border crossing in the Western Hemisphere, and federal dollars help us make it easier to trade, cross legally and commute across the border."RELATED: Official: ICE to begin immigration raids in 10 cities on June 23Gustafson continued, "Mayor Faulconer said to the President that the border does not define San Diego's relationship with Mexico. Trade does, and that’s why he’s so focused on getting the USMCA trade agreement approved by Congress. Mayor Faulconer doesn’t support a wall from sea to shining sea. Let’s invest instead on stopping sewage from the Tijuana River Valley.”The mayor's press secretary, Ashley Bailey, told City News Service Tuesday that immigration was not discussed between the two. Faulconer was originally scheduled to meet with the White House Intergovernmental Affairs Team, before Trump heard Faulconer was in Washington and invited him to meet.Sections of old border wall have been replaced along San Diego's border recently, including a 14-mile stretch of newly constructed primary and secondary border wall just east of Otay Mesa. 2614

The case was confirmed in an 11-month-old resident who had recently traveled to the Philippines, according to county health officials.Officials said the infant was unimmunized and is currently hospitalized and added others may have been exposed at the following locations: Kaiser Permanente Otay Mesa Medical Office Pediatric Clinic (4650 Palm Ave.) on July 29 from 6 to 9 p.m., Aug. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Aug. 5 from 4:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.Kaiser Permanente Otay Mesa Medical Office Urgent Care and Pharmacy (4650 Palm Ave.) on Aug. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center (9455 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.) on Aug. 5 from 8 to 10 p.m.County Health and Human Services is currently working with Kaiser Permanente to identify those who may have been exposed to determine if they are at risk.“Measles is a very contagious disease that can be spread easily by coughing, sneezing or being in the same room with an infected person,” Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. “Anyone who was at any of these specific locations at the dates and times listed above should watch for symptoms and call their health care provider if they show any signs of the disease.”Measles developed seven to 21 days after exposure. Early symptom include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. A distinctive red rash usually appears one to four days after early symptoms appear. The rash typically begins on the face and head then spreads downward and outward.A person is considered contagious four days before the rash appears.Anyone with symptoms is asked to call their doctor’s office in before visiting directly.Complications from measles are more common in children younger than 5 years old and adults 20 years and older, though the risk is higher with children. Complications include diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia. In severe instances, death can occur.Since there is no treatment for measles, the best course is generally bed rest, fluids, and fever control medication. Those will other health problems may need treatment for those conditions. 2179
