DENVER, Colo. – Since 1995, films like “Toy Story” have become a staple in homes around the world, but what goes into making one film is more than you could imagine. It’s not just art. Science and technology play a big role.Ka-Chun Yu is a curator for the traveling Pixar exhibit being housed at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.“I think when people hear a movie is made using a computer you push a button and something magical happens where the movie pops out on the other end,” said Yu. “But it actually takes an immense amount of work to make an animated film.”There are story boards, modeling and rigging. With rigging it allows animators to move characters’ body parts more freely and make them more realistic.Another part of the pipeline is simulation. “In ‘Brave,’ Merida’s hair took a lot of work in order to make it look realistic, having it looking springy but not so unrealistic that it did weird things when they animated it.”Lighting is also a big part. It creates mood and determines day or night. However, in the movie “Finding Nemo,” different lighting colors like yellow were used to make the fish appear to be swimming closer to the surface. Using dark blue makes it look like deep water. Then, there is rendering. In the movie “Coco,” a single frame could take up to 89 hours to render.“The reason it takes so long is partly because of all the lights involved, so you are looking at all the lights bouncing off all the characters and reaching the virtual camera,” said Yu.We learned the production of an animated film can take anywhere between 6 to 18 months, but the entire movie from start to finish can take 2 to 7 years to make. A traditional Hollywood film on average takes less than 2 years to complete. The next Pixar movie to hit theaters will be “Onward.” It’s set to be released in March 2020. Now, you will be able to appreciate how it all comes to life. 1901

DENVER — A father, mother and their daughter were shot to death late Thursday night at a home in southwest Denver, and the suspect knew the victims well, according to police.Bustaman Kartabrata, 59, was arrested overnight at a home in northeast Denver, police Chief of Investigations Joseph Montoya said at a news conference Friday afternoon. He faces three counts of first-degree murder and felony menacing in the shooting.Investigators were still working to determine a possible motive in the shooting and whether Kartabrata was related to the victims. Montoya said Kartabrata was "very well acquainted" with the family."It was some sort of conflict that occurred that evening that led to this," Montoya said. The shooting happened Thursday night at a home in Denver. Police arrived and found two adults – a man and a woman – and a juvenile girl with gunshot wounds. The woman was pronounced dead at the home, and the man and girl were pronounced dead at a hospital, Montoya said.Officials hadn't released the names of the victims as of Friday afternoon. Another juvenile was in the home during the shooting but escaped unharmed, Montoya said.A sale had recently closed on the home, and "there was indication there was people moving in and out of this home," Montoya said. "In all my time, this is one of the most emotional cases I've ever dealt with," Montoya said. "Everybody who was involved in this ... they were shaken by this incident. It was something that didn't need to happen. It was just so senseless."Neighbors said that the family was planning to move out of Colorado as the father, a school bus driver, dealt with health issues. Denver Public Schools Superintendent Susana Cordova released a statement Friday afternoon about "the loss of three members of the Traylor Academy and Denver Public Schools family." Traylor Academy, an elementary school, is blocks away from the home where the shooting happened."Our entire school district is saddened by this news," Cordova said. "We send our condolences to the family and friends of those who passed away." 2079

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is facing another lawsuit over the department's loan forgiveness program aimed at helping defrauded students.More than 150,000 applications are pending, and some borrowers have been waiting years to hear whether they'll be granted debt relief. Seven borrowers, all of whom attended for-profit colleges, filed the lawsuit Tuesday."Department officials have not offered a timetable for reviewing these applications. It's becoming very clear that they're not treating them in good faith," said Eileen Connor, legal director at the Project on Predatory Student Lending, which filed the case on behalf of the seven borrowers. The department stopped processing claims under DeVos, who wants to rewrite the Obama-era rule that allows defrauded students to seek loan forgiveness. But a federal judge -- siding with Democratic attorneys general from 18 states and the District of Columbia -- ruled that DeVos' freeze was "arbitrary and capricious" and ordered immediate implementation of the rule in October.Still, the department did not process any more claims through the end of last year, according to the latest data available, and Connor says there's been no indication that it has started to review them again. The Department of Education did not immediately respond to a request for comment.DeVos has called the rule, known as Borrower Defense to Repayment, "bad policy." She's proposed offering partial loan forgiveness for qualifying students instead, based on the income of their peers who attended similar programs at other colleges. The plan would save the government .7 billion over a 10-year period compared with the Obama version, the department said.Department officials have argued that they cannot process claims while another lawsuit is ongoing. The agency was also sued over the proposal to offer partial forgiveness."Until we have clear direction from the court, or a different methodology that we think doesn't run the same challenges -- yes, we are in a holding pattern for students that are probably eligible for partial relief," said Diane Auer Jones, principal deputy under secretary, at an event at the 2165
