SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A war veteran who used to deliver meals to seniors in the North County is now receiving them himself.City councilman Mark Kersey honored Jim Munday on Wednesday morning for his contributions. This week, the long-time Rancho Bernardo resident will celebrate a birthday most of us can only hope to reach—102 years old.Councilman Kersey brought him a blanket, flowers, some food, and a special certificate in honor of his birthday and thanking him for all of his contributions to the Meals on Wheels of San Diego County, but it's even more meaningful because Jim was once a Meals on Wheels volunteer himself.“He started delivering when he was 90 and now he's 102, so he's a pretty special guy,” Kersey said. At 102, Munday is quiet, modest, and hard of hearing but still very much aware of the world around him.“A good day for a birthday party,” he said as he sat outside. The World War II vet fought in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving several medals including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.His own artwork lines his living room. He started painting when was 90 and says he learned from watching Bob Ross on PBS.In 2003, Munday’s wife, Mildred, passed away, but their great-grandson, Hudson, and daughter Millie, were both on hand for this major milestone.“He's a very honest, generous person, and I'm very proud of him,” Millie said. A man taught his family to care for others. Now his community is doing the same for him.“To be able to give back to someone who's given so much is something that makes San Diego and Rancho Bernardo a special place,” Kersey said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A shopping trip in City Heights ended with a flurry of anti-gay slurs and a road rage assault.On Tuesday afternoon, Marco Aguirre spent an hour shopping, before heading back to his truck, parked in the 3700 block on University Avenue."I back out and lightly bump the car behind me," said Aguirre, 49.Aguirre says he saw two men emerge from an older-model, red sedan. Aguirre apologized, offering to show his insurance, but the men were agitated."The driver came on my side and the passenger came on the other side. Both of them were screaming," said Aguirre.With his cellphone, Aguirre, who is openly gay, capturing the profanities, including a string of anti-gay slurs. Aguirre was frozen. "I feel terrible. Panicked," said Aguirre.He says the slurs continued for about 15 minutes, before he decided to get out of the car to assess the damage."I see no damage to my truck and no damage to their vehicle," said Aguirre. Aguirre says when he stepped onto the sidewalk, he was attacked."One of the guys grabbed my phone and smashed it into the sidewalk. The same guy punched me in the face, under my left eye," said Aguirre. Aguirre says the two men got in the car and took off, leaving him with swelling under his left eye. The incident also left him determined to find the two men."It's not right. I need to take a stand. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After moving to San Diego almost three years ago, Derek and Terri Ruff are on a mission to experience everything the city has to offer. “Yes we are, it’s fantastic! We hardly leave the county, there’s just so much to do," said Derek.The couple moved here from New Mexico, and for nine years Derek's colon cancer seemed to be behind them. “I won’t say cancer-free, but I didn’t have any symptoms for years, until last May, whenever I came in for a checkup, and they discovered cancer again," said Derek.It was stage IV metastatic colon cancer.“It’s a lot. It’s a tough diagnosis, it’s really difficult to live through.”After three months of aggressive chemotherapy, Ruff's condition only got worse. His journey brought him to UC San Diego Health's Moores Cancer for a clinical trial, which unfortunately did not work. But he Ruff became a candidate for another trial involving natural killer cells created from stem cells.“These are patients who don’t have a lot of good options in terms of chemotherapy or immunotherapy," said Dr. Sandip Patel, a medical oncologist who is leading the trial at UCSD. Decades of research on natural killer cells have culminated in the new cancer treatment being developed by San Diego-based Fate Therapeutics.Fate is the first to mass produce cancer-killing cells from a type of stem cell called a human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC). "The concept of utilizing the stem cells that are within us, within our blood factory, within our blood marrow, to create a master bank of cells that we can utilize to program in different ways to fight cancer with cellular immunotherapy."The off-the-shelf, iPSC-derived natural killer cell cancer immunotherapy received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to move into clinical trials in November 2018. Ruff is the first person in the world to receive the treatment and got his first dose in February.“Being the first is exciting but it was less so hearing that you have stage iv cancer and you don’t have much of a future, and now I feel hopeful, again," said Ruff.While it's too early to tell if the treatment is working, researchers are hopeful this treatment will one day help many cancer patients. 2212

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Encinitas family on vacation woke up to a disturbing alert last week, video of someone stealing multiple packages from their porch.Homeowner Mark Sandorf says the most peculiar thing was who the thief was."It’s different in that she looks like she’s probably someone’s grandma," said Sandorf.The family immediately filed a police report from New Mexico.10News blurred the woman's face because the San Diego Sheriff's Department has not yet said she's a wanted suspect.One of the packages had sentimental value, three custom holsters for Sandorf's son who is in law enforcement."My son is, like I said, risking his life out there every day and we try to keep him in good equipment and what not. These were custom made by a friend of mine in South Carolina," said Sandorf.Sandorf says the most frustrating thing is knowing the holsters will likely get thrown away.He hopes others in his Encinitas Ranch neighborhood will be on alert after the incident. 980

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An hours-long SWAT standoff involving a domestic violence suspect in Point Loma came to an end Thursday night. Police were called to the 2200 block of Caminito Pescado around 4:45 p.m. after receiving a call from a neighbor. Police say a woman who lives in the home ran to the neighbor’s house reporting that she and her 71-year-old husband got into a fight. Police and SWAT responded and found the man on the second floor balcony of the condo. After trying to get the 71-year-old down from the balcony, police say he ran inside before a gunshot could be heard coming from the home. Neighbor Jenny Taylor spoke with 10News on FaceTime, saying she could see officers lined up with their weapons drawn from her patio. She said she was ready for the worst, "let me move it so we can at least duck down really quick and hit the floor and run inside the house, so we left the screen door open and moved all the chairs out of the way."It was hours before police and SWAT packed up.Authorities later found the man dead inside. According to police, records show authorities had never been previously called to the home. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
