LA MESA (KGTV)— Meteorologists are predicting a wet Christmas week in San Diego. 10News revisited residents at the San Diego RV Resort in La Mesa that dealt with a Thanksgiving flood to see if they are prepared for the next set of thunderstorms. Taylor Jaime showed 10News around the RV resort. "She [My mother] was cooking a turkey at my sister's house for Thanksgiving," Jaime remembered. She said she never got to enjoy that turkey after her home got washed away. Jaime and her family live at the San Diego RV Resort full-time. On Thanksgiving day, heavy rains inundated the ravine that runs parallel to the resort. "So the water started coming over this [the wall]," Jaime motioned. The retaining wall collapsed and the water came up waist-high, destroying two of her cars, their 40-foot trailer and everything inside. Unfortunately, their the new RV was insured at the time of the storm. "The water was so nasty. There was crab, there was fish in the trailer," Jaime remembered. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the RV resort is right in the middle of a heavy flood zone. The resort staff told 10News they just finished rebuilding the wall Saturday. In the last month, Jaime said she saw Caltrans and California Conservation Corps workers clean up some of the debris, but she fears another collapse. "The water won't be able to go through. It'll get stuck down there, like last time," pointing at the west end of the resort lot.With heavy rains forecasted during Christmas week, some of Jaime's neighbors have already lined sandbags along their lots. Lucky for Jaime and her family, they have a spare trailer, albeit an older and smaller one. They parked it away from the ravine and closer to the entrance gate. Six people and several small animals are now crammed inside the trailer. They didn't skimp on holiday decorations, though."We are still in the spirit," Jaime said. "It's not going to bring us down. We are still a family. We still have each other. And that's what matters the most."10News reached out to San Diego RV Resort's parent company for comment to see if they are making other preparations ahead of the storm. LEE COUNTY, Fla., — Your child gives it their all, both time and effort, yet struggles to complete a homework assignment.Another child scribbles their name on a piece of paper and turns it in.Technically, both students could get the same grade according to an investigation by Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida that’s uncovering the tactics teachers and administrators are using to boost low grades.WFTX's Tony Sadiku obtained emails from a Harns Marsh Middle School assistant principal to teachers asking for everyone’s commitment to follow the school’s grading policy, '50% minimum, 0 = 50' in a practice known as minimum grading.Teachers say students who would otherwise get a zero are given between a 50 to 59 percent regardless of whether they prove they’ve learned anything. If a student doesn’t turn in a single assignment all quarter, they’ve earned a 50% at some schools. The principal at Harns Marsh told teachers in 2016 via email, “A 60 for our students that are trying but are several grade levels behind academically is fair.”Some parents said they disagree.  “I don’t believe it’s fair, by no means,” said one parent of a 7th grader at the school.Several parents said they've never heard of minimum grading.  Even some Lee County School Board members said they were unaware of the school’s grading practice.  “I know of no such policy, formal or informal, in Lee County schools,” said Board Member Cathleen Morgan.“I am not aware of such a policy,” said Board Member Dr. Jane Kuckel. “I think every parent needs to be aware of the grading policy,” said Mark Castellano, a former Lee County public school teacher. The Lee County School District said minimum grading is not a District policy, but a practice implemented by some schools and teachers to encourage struggling students. “Often times a zero can completely deteriorate a grade and they will lose interest because they think there’s no way for them to get a passing grade,”  said Dr. Wanda Creel, the District’s Chief Academic Officer. “When students will grasp those concepts is really is on a personalized individualized basis. Minimum grading allows students to stay engaged while still learning and for teachers to continue to work with them through the process.”Creel said the goal is for students to pass on their own.But does a better grade on a report card mean students are actually learning?While students may have a better shot at passing their classes because of minimum grading, numbers from the Florida Department of Education show many still aren’t testing well.At Harns Marsh Middle school, 38 percent passed the English Language Arts Florida Standards Assessment test in 2017. In the entire District, 53 percent of middle schoolers passed.Harns Marsh kids also had lower numbers in the FSA Mathematics Test. Only 35 percent of kids passed last year compared to 51 percent of middle schoolers in the District who passed.Middle school students who don’t pass are still promoted to the next grade level, but may be more likely to struggle down the road.Statistically, 8th graders are more likely to be retained than 6th and 7th graders according to the Florida Department of Education.“Teachers will begin to think that I need to retain because this child doesn’t seem to be able to tackle the issues in high school,” Creel said. “A retained 8th grader can be one of the highest indicators of a dropout. We are finding strategies to help our overaged 8th graders to get the credits they need so they can move on to high school.”“You have kids that are absolutely motivated and they love learning. Those kids you rarely have to do anything. Then you have kids that struggle. They struggle with their home life. They struggle with their socioeconomic situations,” Castellano said.But is adjusting a student’s grade closer to passing the solution?“What are we teaching kids in terms of their personal responsibility for their education?” Castellano said.Castellans says in his nearly 30+ years of teaching, not once has he used the practice. “What they’re saying is for those kids the grade is irrelevant, it’s not going to motivate them,” said Robert Kenny, a professor of education at Florida Gulf Coast University. School Board Member Jane Kuckel supports minimum grading policies at some schools.“All students learn and thrive in different ways," she said. "The outcomes are non-negotiable. The process for getting there needs to be tailored to the achievement levels and learning styles of the students.”One parent argues her child earning the grade matters more.“It’s a big deal cause he needs to learn and he needs to make it in this world," the parent said. "The world is not going to give him a free pass forever and they don’t need to learn that in middle school.” The District said they plan to set up committees next fall to evaluate how minimum grading is being done to come up with a more uniform approach across the District.  5113

LA MESA (CNS) - A 29-year-old man was shot multiple times and died in a La Mesa shopping center, police said Saturday.The shooting happened at 9:38 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Marketplace at Lake Murray Village, 5600 Lake Murray Blvd., according to Lt. Greg Runge of the La Mesa Police Department.Police received multiple calls of gunshots heard in the parking lot, Runge said. One caller reported seeing a victim down on the ground."Responding officers located the unresponsive victim and discovered he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso," Runge said.Officers began CPR and rendered aid until medics arrived, the lieutenant said. LAND O' LAKES, Fla. — Pasco County, Florida Sheriff's Office is investigating in incident where a Sunlake High School Resource Officer slammed a student during an arrest.PCSO says that the incident occurred Tuesday when the school administration requested the school resource officer, Rich Stackon, remove a student from the cafeteria.Leading up to the incident, school administrators asked the student to return to class several times before the SRO was called in. The student was reportedly skipping class and being disruptive.According to deputies, when the male SRO attempted to place the female student in custody she resisted arrest.In a video, recorded by another student, the SRO can be seen slamming the student to the ground after resisting. 784

Larry Scott, the commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference, said Thursday that a new coronavirus test that claims to provide fast and accurate results is a “major step” when it comes to allowing a football season.Last month, the Pac-12, along with the Big Ten and several other Division 1 FBS conference, decided to postpone the college football season. Meanwhile, two Division 1 FBS games were played on Thursday.Of the Power 5 conference, the ACC, SEC and Big 12 are all moving forward with a fall football season. The decision not to have a fall football season for the Big Ten and Pac-12 amid the coronavirus pandemic came with some backlash as parents, players and even President Donald Trump have pushed for the Pac-12 and Big Ten to change their decisions.And now they have a reason to change their mind.“This is a major step toward the safe resumption of Pac-12 sport competitions,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott. “The availability of a reliable test that can be administered daily, with almost immediate results, addresses one of the key concerns that was expressed by our medical advisory committee, as well as by student-athletes, coaches and others. At the same time, our partnership with Quidel, the industry leader in point-of-care antigen testing, will provide crucial research data that will benefit our members’ communities as well as the entire country.”The Pac-12 said that the Quidel tests are expected to reach Pac-12 athletic departments by the end of the fall. The conference says that having a reliable rapid coronavirus test was a key reason why the conference postponed the fall football season.The company claims to have results within 15 minutes and to be 96.7% accurate.According to The Athletic reporter Nicole Auerbach, Scott said he is hopeful that the Pac-12 could resume and align its football calendar with the Big Ten. The two conferences have long held a symbolic relationship through the Rose Bowl, although in recent years, the Rose Bowl is no longer exclusively held between the champions of the Big Ten and Pac-12. 2066
