SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities publicly identified a man Thursday who was fatally shot by deputies when he allegedly advanced on them with a knife in his hand at an Alpine apartment complex.Patrol personnel were investigating a report of a man yelling and threatening to kill someone in the 2600 block of Alpine Boulevard when they got into the deadly confrontation with 31-year-old Daniel Ayala about 3 p.m. Monday, according to sheriff's officials.Ayala died at the scene. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man smashed a display case at a Mira Mesa jewelry store and stole several necklaces, police said Tuesday.The theft was reported shortly after 6:50 p.m. Monday at Daniel's Jewelers in the shopping center near Mira Mesa Boulevard and Camino Ruiz, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man entered the store and smashed a glass display case with a hammer, Buttle said, adding that the thief did not threaten the employee.The thief then grabbed several necklaces from the display case and fled in an unknown direction, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 Black man in his late 20s. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - For the second day in a row, San Diego County public health officials reported a case rate of fewer than 100 positive COVID-19 tests per 100,000 people, indicating things may be improving locally with regard to the pandemic.If the case rate -- which was 96.5 per 100,000 people on Thursday -- stays below 100 on Friday, the county will officially be off the state's monitoring list. After an additional 14 consecutive days below that number, some schools with students in grades 7-12 could potentially reopen for in- person teaching, depending on individual school district metrics. Theoretically, if current trends continue, students could be in school by Aug. 28.Additionally, 48 elementary schools have filed waivers with the county to return to school early.While signs look positive for the region, County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher warned county residents against getting complacent."We are seeing progress, but we are in the middle of a marathon, not a sprint to the finish line right in front of us," he said Thursday. "Our goal is not just to have the rate of cases fall below 100 per 100,000, but to keep it there."State mandates on which businesses are allowed to have indoor operations would not change, Fletcher said, until the county gets more information from Gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials announced Wednesday they received reports of the county's third person to die of flu-related causes since the 2019-20 flu season began.The 80-year-old north county man died Nov. 1, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. He had received this season's flu vaccine prior to his death and had additional medical conditions. Health officials received reports of this flu season's first death in August. The county also confirmed 58 flu cases last week, nearly double the 30 confirmed cases from the previous week. County health officials have already confirmed 420 flu cases this season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. At this time last flu season, officials had confirmed only 157 cases.
