ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — New undercover video appears to show signature gatherers pitching falsehoods to voters get them to sign petitions that would force the massive Newland Sierra development to a public vote.The County Board of Supervisors approved the project last month. It calls for more than 2,000 new homes on nearly 2,000 acres north of Deer Springs Road in Escondido. Opponents, backed by the exclusive Golden Door Spa, launched a signature drive to collect about 68,000 signatures from registered voters before Oct. 26. It would delay the project so the public can weigh in at the polls. On Friday, Newland released undercover video purportedly showing the signature gatherers making claims that the development would raise taxes, force people out of their homes, and encompass 430,000 acres. "What they're doing is basically putting in a bunch of homes, stores, casinos, hotels," one petitioner says in the video (the plan does not call for casinos or hotels).Steve Inscoe, who lives in Escondido, said signature gatherers told him that plans called for one million square feet of commercial space (it calls for 81,000), and that there was no plan to mitigate traffic (Newland Sierra says it will spend million on traffic improvements)."We are at a time when we need a whole lot of housing," said Inscoe, who supports the project.But the committee behind the petition says the real story is what's not in the video. Newland Sierra has deployed so-called truth teams that are allegedly the aggressors - an attorney for the committee says they even surround signature gatherers to block them from doing their jobs. It has led to confrontations, plus restraining orders and cease and desist letters from Vons/Albertsons. Rita Brandin, a vice president at Newland Sierra, said the signature gatherers are the ones who get confrontational."When a signature gatherer who is being paid says 'this project will raise taxes,' our truth teams can say 'that's inaccurate.' So because the signature gatherer is the one that signature by signature is making his paycheck, they get aggressive," she said.Newland Sierra sent the committee a cease and desist letter, reserving its right to litigate.In a response, Sean Welch, the attorney for the committee, warned Newland Sierra against any legal action. He noted that the signature gatherers are trained and that the First Amendment provides wide latitude for political expression. "It is beyond dispute that the Newland Sierra Project is extremely controversial, and that a large number of voters throughout San Diego County has long been opposed," Welch wrote. (AP) — A man who gained internet fame as "Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker" was sentenced to 57 years in prison Thursday for the beating death of a New Jersey man he had met in Times Square.Caleb McGillvary will have to serve at least 85% of his sentence under terms imposed in state Superior Court in Union County.The 30-year-old Alberta, Canada, native was convicted last month of killing 73-year-old lawyer Joseph Galfy at Galfy's New Jersey home in May 2013. Authorities said the two met in New York City and the defendant stayed at Galfy's home.McGillvary alleged he acted in self-defense following an attempted sexual assault. Prosecutors said his statements were inconsistent and also cited the victim's extensive injuries. Galfy was found beaten to death in his bedroom, wearing only his socks and underwear.Several days after Galfy's death, an employee at a Starbucks in Philadelphia recognized McGillvary, and he was arrested at a bus station.A few months before meeting Galfy, McGillvary gained a measure of fame after intervening in an attack on a California utility worker.In a TV interview viewed millions of times online, he described using a hatchet he was carrying to repeatedly hit a man who had struck the worker with his car, and also fend off a further attack on two women. 1321

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident involving Phil Graham, a candidate to represent the 76th district in the California Assembly. Niki Burgan filed the battery case with the Sheriff's Office Sunday, May 20.  She accuses Graham of forcibly kissing her at an Encinitas Bar. Burgan told 10News that it happened at 1st Street Bar on S. Coast Hwy 101 on the evening of Sunday, May 13, into the early morning of Monday, May 14 as the bar was closing. She said that Graham had initially been flirting, even mentioning that he was running for office and asked whether she would vote for him. After finding out that he was a Republican candidate she said, no she was a Democrat. At some point, she says his talk turned into aggression and Graham grabbed her hair, pulled her in, and started to kiss her. She said she had to push him off. Burgan also said she remembers that Graham had so much to drink that night that she had to help him sign his tab. The next morning Burgan says she learned that he was related to former Governor Pete Wilson and she was worried about repercussions. That's why she didn't file right charges right away.  1259

Facebook has come under fire after posts discussing the sale of a child bride were made and shared on its site.An auction was discussed on the social media platform for a girl aged 16 or 17 in South Sudan that sought payment for her hand in marriage.Facebook said the post was taken down as soon as the company learned of it, but that wasn't until after the girl involved was married.According to children's rights organization Plan International, the girl was bid on by five men, some of whom were reportedly high-ranking South Sudanese government officials. 567

ESCONDIDO, Calif (KGTV) -- A Palomar Water delivery man is being credited for saving the life of an elderly woman who fell and couldn't get up to call for help. On Monday, Marco Perea showed up to deliver water for his 88-year-old customer in Escondido. When he knocked on her door, he could hear her, but she wouldn't come to the door. After several attempts to get her to open the door, she was able to tell him that she'd fall on Sunday afternoon and hadn't been able to get up since then. Perea called 911 and paramedics and firefighters were able to make entry into the apartment. The woman was rushed to the hospital. Perea says the woman does have a caregiver, but only from Monday through Fridays. The woman's condition is still unknown. 755
