The State Council also decided to award the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) and the Hong Kong sub committee for the Olympic equestrian competition.     BOCOG President Liu Qi, who is also secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, representatives from athletes, volunteers, organizers, security workers and the armed forces also spoke at the meeting.     Xia Geng, mayor of the Olympic co-hosting city Qingdao, Liu Chunhong, Olympic weight-lifting gold medalist and other volunteer and organizer representatives also gave speeches at the meeting.

Your spirit has touched all Chinese people. I hope you will soon go back to your normal lives and build a better home."     At Dujiangyan Radio and Television Station, Li urged the technicians to repair the network as soon as possible to ensure that the people in the quake zone could enjoy radio and TV programs. Li hoped they could go deep into the front line of the quake and represent the feelings of the victims, soldiers and other relief workers.     "I believe you can create many artworks that will inspire the people affected by the earthquake," Li said.     He was accompanied by Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.     The death toll in the earthquake that jolted Sichuan Province and some other areas on May 12 rose to 69,107 as of Tuesday noon.

BUDAPEST, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, head of China's top political advisory body, on Thursday met with Hungary's parliament speaker and put forward a package of proposals for further expanding friendship and cooperation between China and Hungary.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), held talks with Szili Katalin, speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly in Budapest Thursday morning.     During the meeting, Jia suggested that the two countries should maintain high-level contact so as to deepen political trust. The two countries should also expand trade and economic cooperation in a bid to promote common development. China will continue to encourage well-established companies to invest in Hungary. It will also adopt effective measures to increase imports from Hungary and encourage enterprises from both countries to carry out active and concrete cooperation, Jia said. As a member of the European Union, Hungary is ready to make active contributions to the development of EU-China relations.

XI'AN, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged local officials to help solve living difficulties for people who have suffered from a major earthquake.     Xi made the call during his inspection to northwestern Shaanxi Province, in which some counties were seriously affected by the deadly quake in neighboring Sichuan Province on May 12.     At Xujiaping village, Xi comforted villagers and encouraged them to resume production as early as possible. Among all 146 households of the village, 126 were affected by the quake and half of their houses were either damaged or flattened.     Xi urged local officials to offer whatever they could to help the people with rebuilding their homes.     The Vice President later came to a middle school, where he told the students and teachers the government had planned for the reconstruction of all quake-ravaged areas across the country.     He reminded local governments to carry out serious epidemic prevention, especially the safety of water and food after the disaster. NANNING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Downpours brought by Typhoon Nuri swept south China's Guangdong and Guangxi from Friday to Saturday, but no casualties have been reported. From 8 a.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday, rainstorms accompanied by winds of up to 68 km per hour, hit the southeastern areas of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with the biggest precipitation of 350 mm in Beiliu County, according to the regional meteorological station.
