WASHINGTON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and U.S. President George W. Bush met at the White House on Tuesday, agreeing to push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries.     During the meeting, Yang hailed the great development that two countries have achieved in the past seven years in enhancing China-U.S. relations, which he said also contributed to the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world.     He noted that Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Bush have set the direction for the future development of bilateral relations during their meeting held at the sidelines of the Hokkaido G8 summit in Japan earlier this month.     China is willing to work with the United States to follow the direction and push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries, Yang added.     For his part, Bush told the visiting Chinese top diplomat that he is glad to see China-U.S. relations developing on a favorable momentum that the United States is committing to maintaining, and he also appreciates a good working relationship built with Chinese President Hu Jintao.     On the coming Olympic games in Beijing, Yang expressed his welcome to Bush, who is set to attend the opening ceremony, and wished American athletes excellent performance in the competitions.     Bush said, in return, that he looks forward to visiting China to attend the Olympic games' opening ceremony.     On the issues of human rights and religion, Yang told the U.S. president that China would like to continue to exchange its views with the United States on basis of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's domestic affairs, as a way to promote mutual understanding.     He also noted at the meeting that the WTO's Doha Round trade negotiations are at a critical moment, and its success would help promote world economy growth, which is in the common interest of China, the United States and the international community.     China hopes that all sides can work together to push forward with the negotiations and achieve a comprehensive and balanced result, he added.     Yang also met with Stephen Hadley, assistant to the president for national security affairs.

GUANGZHOU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Exhibitors at China's largest trade fair may have one more question to ask when their paper-thin profits are further squeezed by a fast-rising yuan.     "Are you willing to pay by euro?" Lu Jia, a sales manager from a local leather manufacturer at the Canton fair, ventured the final but most crucial question to her Turkish client after introducing her products.     "Honestly, starting clearing of euro transactions rather than the U.S. dollar is not easy for my company, but it is still worth a try given a faster yuan rise this year," the 23 year-old Lu said at the trade-promotion event in Guangzhou, capital of the southern Guangdong Province.     The Chinese currency, the yuan, breached the 7-yuan mark for the first time on April 10, gaining 4.47 percent this year and 18.27 percent since the government unpegged it from the dollar in 2005.     "The yuan appreciation far outpaced our business growth. Its weekly increases were even beyond our anticipation," said Cao Xiaojian, the Jiangsu Shuntian Co., Ltd vice chairman.     Like most other Chinese exporters, Cao earns dollar-denominated profits, which are on the decline as the dollar becomes cheaper. He said that a 1 percent rise in the yuan would result in a sales profit decrease of 2 percent to 6 percent and things were even worse for the garment industry.     "Profit margins for home electrical appliances are between 3 percent and 5 percent and the rising exchange rate has eaten them away," said Zhang Yujing, China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products vice chairman.     Most exhibitors at the fair had to raise their offers due to higher costs in raw materials, energy and transport. Yet, they were afraid too high prices might scare away orders faced with sagging demand due to a global slowdown.     "A small rise in offers is acceptable," said Khaldoun Kalbouneh, general manager of the Furniture World, a trading company headquartered in Palestine. "But if the prices are too high, I may consider other markets."     Zhang said export-oriented sectors should improve their product mix, add more value and use financial tools to evade risks by the yuan rise.     As China's largest listed textile manufacturer, the Jiangsu Shuntian has pulled investment from textile into other industries like chemical, finance and securities, mines and high-tech, among others.     But many other companies prefer price increases. Chinese leading home appliance maker Qingdao Haier said it would re-set its prices with overseas sellers once the yuan gained more than 3 percent. The new price would be determined by the specific foreign exchange rate.     Feng Bin, Suzhou Chunlan Air Conditioner Co., Ltd general manager, said he hoped to transact via the euro. "The offer will expire in three months if the client sticks to the dollar. The exchange rate changes too quickly."     Experts say the change of currency clearing system is still not feasible for most exporters as it involves adjustment of export markets and bargain with foreign buyers. Besides, such services in domestic banks are too complicated, they say.     Therefore, some companies are considering financial derivatives as a way out. Shen Zhiming, Zhejiang Cathaya International Co., Ltd manager, said his company had bought currency futures for two years. "It is a real learning process for Chinese enterprises, a process for internationalization."     The China Import and Export Fair has two phases, from April 15 to 20 and April 25 to 30. The first phase features textiles, garments, health products, household appliances, tools, small vehicles and hardware.     Food, tea, kitchenware, decorations, toys, sporting goods and office supplies highlights the second phase.

In the future, we will help them in return," the premier added.     "Trials and tribulations serve only to revitalize the nation," he wrote on the blackboard to encourage them. BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's ruling Communist Party said on Sunday that it would strive to double the per-capita disposable income of rural residents by 2020 from the 2008 level.     The goal was part of the decision made at the close of the third Plenary Session of the 17th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, which focused on issues concerning rural reform and development. Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, delivered a work report at the four-day plenum, held from Oct. 9 to 12 in Beijing.     The government would also boost consumption of rural residents by a big margin and basically eliminate absolute poverty in rural areas by 2020, according to a communique issued on the plenum's conclusion. A rise of at least 6 percent was expected for 2008, according to a government report in March.     The rural population mired in absolute poverty was reduced to 15 million last year, down from 250 million in 1978.     Targets set at the plenum for rural reform and development till 2020 also included "improving the system of economic growth in the countryside and establishing a mechanism to integrate urban and rural areas in terms of economic growth and social development".     "The modernization of agriculture will advance with major progress, and agricultural productivity will be elevated to a higher level, with national grain security and product supplies guaranteed," said the communique.     The Central Committee also agreed a goal to improve grassroots democracy in the countryside, and vowed to guarantee equal public services in rural areas, such as education opportunities for all rural residents and better medical services and subsistence support.     The communique said there were several "musts" which should be followed:     -- strengthening the position of agriculture as the foundation of the national economy and putting the food security of 1.3 billion people as the top priority.     -- protecting farmers' rights and ensuring the aim and outcome of all the work of the Party and the state is to realize, safeguard and expand the fundamental interests of the majority of the farmers.     -- unremittingly liberating and developing the productive forces in rural areas and make reform and innovation as the fundamental driving force for the development of the rural regions.     -- taking into overall consideration the development of both urban and rural regions.     -- upholding the Party's role as the leadership in the development of the rural areas.     The communique outlined the plan for advancing rural reform and development in the next few years, giving priority to reform and innovation, developing modern agriculture, boosting the capacity of agricultural production, and developing public utilities in rural regions.     About the land policy, the communique said it was necessary to maintain and improve the basic system for rural operations and improve the strict management system of land in rural regions.     It was also necessary to set up a modern financial system in rural areas and establish a system which would help integrate economic and social development in urban and rural areas.     In addition, the communique said it was imperative to enhance standardization of agricultural products and strengthen work on improving quality of agricultural products.     "We should strictly conduct supervision in the entire production process and carry out supervisory duty to ensure quality of the products. We should never allow unqualified products to enter the market," it said.     A total of 202 full members and 166 alternate members of the Committee attended the plenum, according to the communique.     Members of standing committee of the CPC central committee for discipline inspection and top officials of the relevant departments were also present at the session, the communique said.     The plenum had also gathered delegates to the 17th CPC National Congress who had been working on agriculture and rural development at grassroots levels, and experts and scholars on agriculture, rural areas and farmers.     This meeting was significant because it was the third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee 30 years ago that pushed the country on to the road of its historic reform and opening-up drive.
