SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nine drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a downtown San Diego checkpoint Friday night.The checkpoint was set up on the 1400 block of G Street between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.Throughout the course of the night, police checked more than 1,100 vehicles. Nine people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Another individual was arrested on other criminal charges, police said.“A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers,” police said in a news release. 711

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New documents in a search warrant reveal evidence in the investigation of the Poway synagogue shooting during which one person was killed and three were injured. Evidence cited in the documents confirms rumors that have been spread over the last two months surrounding a possible live stream and an alternative chat room site where many alleged John T. Earnest adopted his hateful ideology.The document states, "San Diego Police Department ("SDPD") Officers responded to that location and took John Earnest into custody without further incident. Seen on the front passenger seat was an AR-I5 rifle but no handgun was visible. Additionally, in the vehicle was a helmet with a Go-Pro camera on it."The document later describes the suspect's disposition after officers made contact. "At that time, Earnest did not appear to be under the influence of a controlled substance but did appear to have a 'flat affect' as though he was detached or unaffected by his actions," the document says.The document brings up the manifesto that was the subject of a previous 10News report. "An SDSD system data miner, found a manifesto on Pastebin.com written by a person identifying himself as John Earnest," the document says. "In the manifesto, which he named 'An Open Letter.'"On page six of the document, there is a reference to how Earnest adopted his ideology. "During that interview, he informed an SDSO Detective that he had adopted his ideology of hate for members of the Jewish religion approximately 18 month earlier. Based on my training and experience, I know that there is a process in which someone undergoes adoption of radical ideologies. This process can take several months or several years before a person actually commits to those ideologies. During the interview, Earnest also stated that he was inspired by individuals such as Adolph Hitler and Brenton Tarrant."The document also looks at a Facebook post, from a page investigators linked to Earnest. "Earnest made a posting in which he thought to draw attention to his forthcoming attack on the Chabad of Poway, share his views through his open letter, and offer people the opportunity to observe the attack itself," the document says.The document also contains statements referring to the alternative message board site 8chan, where many believe Earnest adopted a hateful ideology. "Earnest stated in the subject posting, "I've only been lurking for a year and a half, yet, what I've learned here is priceless." This information suggests that Earnest was inspired and/or educated by individuals who commented on his threads."The document explains how hard it is to track users on the site and how easy it is to modify or erase information on the site. For those reasons investigators wanted to keep the search warrant sealed.In attached files, the document shows comments from 8chan users asking "anyone had a decent read of the manifesto yet?" As well as "Anybody not already at least on a vpn [virtual private network] is playing with fire here, don't get yourselves caught before actually making an effort."Earnest will be in court for the preliminary hearing for his state case on August 19. 3182

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nearly four thousand kids in San Diego County have tested positive for lead poisoning over the past decade, and more than 130,000 have missed crucial tests, according to a new report from the California State Auditor.State law requires all 1-and-2 year old children on Medi-Cal to get lead testing. The auditor's office says that's not happening.According to the study, 61% of the tests that should have happened since 2009 were missed. In San Diego, that number is 59%. Specifically, kids in San Diego missed 130,657 of the 220,782 tests that should have been administered.Meanwhile, 44,418 kids across the state tested positive for elevated lead levels. In San Diego, 3,395 tested positive.Local doctors say it's problematic because lead poisoning is nearly impossible to detect without proper testing."Unless you screen kids, they are almost always asymptomatic," says Dr. Kenneth Morris, the Medical Director of the Children's Primary Care Medical Group. "You have no idea until you do the routine screening."Dr. Morris says infants are especially prone to ingesting lead, which can cause developmental problems throughout life."They're crawling on the floors, and they're putting their hands in their mouth. It's just that much easier for the lead to get into their system," he says.Morris says access is a problem for many families on Medi-Cal. They go to their doctor's office for routine check-ups and appointments, but can't get to the follow up lab visits for testing."If you have to refer a child out to a laboratory, it becomes that much more challenging. Because then it falls on the family to be able to get to a lab or hospital to get their blood drawn and get the test completed," he says. "That can be a real challenge for under-served families. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-released census numbers show residents are fleeing California and San Diego County in sizable numbers.10News found Angie Romero in Lemon Grove outside a U-Haul trailer, packed with rented wine barrels she will be using as decor for her 50th birthday party.  She'll likely be renting another U-Haul in the not-so-distant future."The cost of living puts you in another mindset.  I'm getting older and start wondering about my future," said Romero.RELATED: San Diego group calls for rent controlRomero, who works in sales, plans on packing up and leaving the state within the next two years.  One reason: the rent for her City Heights apartment."I've lived there three years, and every year it's gone up either or ," said Romero.Romero is hardly alone. San Diego’s median rent rose 3.9 percent to ,548 compared to 2.8 percent in the rest of the country, according to Zillow. Home values rose 10.1 percent to 1,100.According to the latest census numbers, in the year-span ending July 2017, adding up all the people moving into and out of California translates into a net loss of 138,000 people. In San Diego County, there is also an apparent exodus with a net loss of nearly 16,000 people in the year ending in July 2017.
