LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three Los Angeles police officers have been charged with falsifying records reporting that people they stopped were gang members or associates. Prosecutors say the members of the Police Department's Metropolitan Division were charged with conspiracy in a 59-count complaint with obstructing justice and multiple counts of filing a false police report and preparing false evidence. In a news release, the LA County DA's office said Braxton Shaw, Michael Coblentz, and Nicholas Martinez are the officers being charged.Prosecutors said in the statement that the officers are accused of falsifying field interview cards they use to conduct interviews while out on duty.The cards, prosecutors say, contained false information and misidentified dozens of people as a gang member.The officers' union said Friday it expects the department to ensure the officers are accorded their due process rights and that any proven mischaracterizations are corrected.The Police Department says 21 additional officers are under investigation. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say an off-duty Los Angeles County deputy was shot early Sunday morning while he was driving and returned fire at the suspect. The sheriff's deputy's name has not been released. Officials say Sunday he was struck once in a lower extremity and is expected to survive his injuries. Authorities say the suspect remains at large and it’s not known if he was struck by gunfire before he ran away. The other two people in the deputy’s vehicle were not hurt. Additional information, such as if the deputy knew the gunman, was not immediately available. 584

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Steven Spielberg speaks about the business of Hollywood, everyone generally listens and few dissent. But reports that he intends to support rule changes that could block Netflix from Oscars-eligibility have provoked a heated, and unwieldy, debate online. It has found the legendary filmmaker at odds with some industry heavyweights, who have pointed out that Netflix has been an important supporter of minority filmmakers and stories, especially in awards campaigns, while also reigniting the ongoing streaming versus theatrical debate.Spielberg has weighed in before on whether streaming movies should compete for the film industry's most prestigious award (TV movies, he said last year, should compete for Emmys), but that was before Netflix nearly succeeded in getting its first best picture Oscar for Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" at last week's Academy Awards. Netflix, of course, did not win the top award — "Green Book," which was produced partially by Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, did.Still, Netflix was a legitimate contender and this year, the streaming service is likely to step up its awards game even more with Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," which The Hollywood Reporter said may also gunning for a wide-theatrical release. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A fire early Friday destroyed a Southern California distribution facility that was used to ship items to Amazon customers. Authorities said employees got out and there were no reports of injuries. The fire briefly closed a nearby freeway as flames shot high into the air. The fire started around 5 a.m. Friday in Redlands, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The flames that engulfed the structure spread to some of the many truck trailers parked at loading docks. The facility was operated by a global logistics company that was dedicated to Amazon. A spokesperson said customer orders will be filled from other sites. 647
