BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met Chairman of the Presidential Committee for the G20 Summit of the Republic of Korea (ROK) II SaKong Tuesday in Beijing. They exchanged views on preparations for the fifth G20 Summit in Seoul next month and agreed to continue to enhance communication and cooperation so as to achieve positive results at the summit.The fifth G20 Summit, an international forum on economic cooperation among the world's 20 major economies, will be held on Nov. 11 and 12. BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Li Changchun on Thursday called on teachers to be "role models" for students and lead by example in matters of discipline and integrity.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when watching a performance dedicated to Teachers' Day, which falls on Friday.More than 700 teachers and students, and a dozen "model teachers" selected by Chinese netizens, joined Li to watch the performance.The Ministry of Education organized an election of "model teachers" online beginning August 8. During the month-long election, around 1.2 million people participated in the voting. A total of 33 teachers stood out among the 96 candidates, representing 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.
BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) vowed to step up regulation of sugar markets on Sunday after reserves helped stabilize prices which recently rose to a record high amid continuing harsh weather.Between Oct. 10-17, the retail price of small-packed sugar averaged 7.68 yuan per kilogram in major cities, up 1.3 percent from the end of September, according to data provided by the MOC.It shows that prices have begun to stabilize, according to the MOC website. The ministry also vowed to strengthen market regulations.China auctioned 210,000 tonnes of sugar reserves on Oct. 22 in a bid to curb soaring prices, which have been blamed on this season's frequent extreme weather in China's major sugar-producing areas, as well as reduced supplies overseas.In southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the country's major sugar-growing area, sugar prices hit a record 6,000 yuan per tonne (902.3 U.S. dollars) on Oct. 11.Further, sugar futures hit an eight-month high of 683.20 pounds per tonne in London on Oct. 15.Also, the MOC said government reserves remain abundant and pledged to improve market supplies and ensure the public's needs.Between October 2009 and September 2010, eight batches of reserve sugar, or a total of 1.71 million tonnes, were auctioned, according to the MOC.
BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao expressed his hope for a continuously improving Beijing Film Academy in a handwritten congratulatory letter to the leading Chinese film school, dubbed the "cradle of China's filmmakers", as it celebrated its 60th founding anniversary on Saturday.State Councilor Liu Yandong also sent a congratulatory letter to the school, urging it to significantly improve the artists' originality and the integrity of the school's students.The Beijing Film Academy is the only school on the Chinese mainland that specializes in the study of cinematography. Its long list of prominent graduates includes many of the country's most important directors and popular movie celebrities.Among these directors are Zhang Yimou, winner of the top award at the Venice Film Festival and Chen Kaige, the only Chinese mainland director ever to win the top prize at Festival de Cannes.
