SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is celebrating 65 years of their Leadership AKAdemy. The program mentors a group of teenage girls every year. The AKAdemy ends with a memorable ball. The AKA San Diego chapter has one mission: encourage scholastic achievement, strong ethical standards, and "be a service to all mankind." For over six decades, those values have been used to mentor girls around the county. During the 1950s, the chapter held its first debutante ball to expose young girls to cultural opportunities. It was historically the debut of young ladies ages 16 to 19 as official members of society. "Now it has grown into a leadership academy to where we equip the young people with life skills," says Chapter President, Deborah Davis-Gillespie. The teens attend different workshops, like college readiness and etiquette, each week for the months' long program. This year's Leadership AKAdemy has a total of 16 girls. "I'm just really happy to be a part of the whole process and the whole experience," says participant Kennedy Harris. Community service is also at the top of the list for the program. The girls participate in community events like the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and the MLK Day of Service in Balboa Park. The goal is to help others and for the girls to have an appreciation for the communities in which they live. "It's really nice to be able to make those connections early on in my life," says participant Sanai Mitchell. After months of workshops, events, and dance practice with their escorts for the ball, the girls are now just a few weeks away from their big night. They will be presented to their families and community as young women, ready to take on the world. "It's an evolution, its life-changing and they walk away a better person than when they came in," says Davis- Gillespie.This year's AKA Leadership AKAdemy will be held on Saturday, March 21st at the Legacy Hotel and Resort in Mission Valley. 2000
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - With election results ready to come out, Downtown San Diego businesses are bracing for protests. Many business owners in the area say the memories of damage when peaceful protests escalated at the end of May are still fresh, so they boarded up windows as a precautionary step, hoping it turns out to not be needed.Related: Looters smash windows, rob stores in downtown San DiegoAldo Broussard owns Carter’s Diamonds, a jewelry store in a jewelry exchange building that houses dozens of jewelry shops and professionals. He said they boarded up the windows at their business in May and during that time saw damage to surrounding buildings, so they boarded up windows again ahead of the election. He said they took that step to protect the small-business owners inside the facility.“There’s a lot of jewelers in here who have basically all their life savings, all their work, all their tools and without it they can’t make a living so it’s more for protection for everybody in the building,” said Broussard.Broussard added that he doesn’t expect protests to cause damage, but would rather be safe than sorry.“I think overall people are good so I think it’s going to be okay. There might be a few who take advantage of the situation but I think overall it’s going to be fine,” he said.Nearby, Sushi 2 restaurant is another small business bracing for protests or unrest this week. Kuniko Holmes is the owner and said she boarded up her windows in June after receiving some damage during downtown protests. She ended up leaving the boards up through the summer because of uncertainty of the future and also because she knew November could be a stressful month when she would have to board up again.“I wanted to make sure so I don’t have to put it up and down and up and down because it’s work for people and also it costs. As a small business like we are, even putting the board up made it expensive,” she said.Indoor dining was also not allowed during that time, so she ultimately decided that if the boards would be staying up through most of the year, she would make them visually appealing.“We decided to ask local artists to put some great art as you see and it changes the dynamic of how it looks and it just looks so inviting,” she said, referencing the peace signs and hearts painted on the boards.Other downtown businesses that boarded up windows ahead of the election include Ralphs, CVS, 7-eleven and the Church of Scientology.San Diego County law enforcement agencies said they are not aware of any planned protests or possible unrest, but have extra staffing just in case. 2614

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The DMV is apologizing for long wait times as they work through a new queuing system and problems with the REAL ID.Wait times (without an appointment) used to be under two hours, now they're closer to 4-5 hours. The DMV issued this statement to 10News:The issue is employees have to manually enter the ID number given to each customer, since a new system went online two weeks ago. The ID number consists of your initials and the last four digits of your phone number.The process prior was completely automatic.The other issue relates to the REAL ID. Employees are taking more time to explain to customers what they need to have in order to get the ID. They were chosen from around 280 that applied."It's more art than science," says Mike Krenn, the CEO of San Diego Venture Group. They're one of the sponsors of the event. "There were so many companies. We fought long and hard over who were the final 10. But they've all got some momentum going to market, all chasing big opportunities."One company, DoWhop, is an online marketplace to buy and sell experiences around San Diego. It's founder, Rae Lietzau, says winning this competition would mean expanding her workforce and bandwidth on the site."At this stage, every dollar counts," says Lietzau. "Right now it means allowing more people to get paid to do what they love to do."In addition to SD Venture Group, the event is put on by Tech Coast Angels and the John G. Howard Foundation. All three groups work to improve business in the region. Krenn says this year's competition shows how San Diego has become a hub for start-ups."We're really on the upswing," says Krenn. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Deadly wildfires in California have burned more than 4 million acres (6,250 square miles) this year, a new record for the most acres burned in a single year. The previous record was two years ago when wildfires destroyed 1.67 million acres (2,609 square miles). California fire officials said the state hit the fearsome milestone Sunday with about two months still left in the fire season.
