SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 33-year-old man was in custody this morning on suspicion of trying to carjack a man in the Talmadge area.The victim was driving in the area of Euclid Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard around 2 p.m. Friday when the suspect grabbed onto the victim's vehicle and was able to get the passenger door open, Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department said.The suspect, identified as Christopher Gomez, got inside and began hitting the victim and asking for the vehicle, Heims said.The victim drove to a parking lot and got Gomez out of the vehicle. Gomez was later arrested, according to Heims.It was unclear whether the driver sustained any injuries. 681

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (KGTV) - New legal action is being taken over the transfer of nuclear waste at the embattled San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). A lawsuit and motion for a temporary restraining order have been filed in federal court.Public Watchdogs is the nonprofit advocacy group pursuing action against Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, Sempra Energy, Holtec International and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Public Watchdogs is asking the courts to order a halt to the storage of nuclear waste at the decommissioned power plant. The nonprofit is alleging, in part, that the storage canisters are defective and could fail, which could cause a deadly nuclear disaster. According to court records, the defendants are creating a major threat by burying nuclear waste next to the ocean, in a tsunami inundation zone, near a fault line and in heavily populated area. The restraining order request claims that once a defective canister is buried, there's no existing method to inspect it unearth it or transfer it. “We're not saying, ‘Stop the decommissioning process.’ We're saying, ‘Put the decommissioning process in perspective and give us a good plan and by the way, protect the environment, too, because this is all we have and we don't get a second chance.’ If there's a Chernobyl here, there's no second chance,” says Public Watchdogs’ attorney, Chuck La Bella.10News contacted all of the defendants on Friday.SDG&E responded with “no comment”.Southern California Edison sent 10News the following statement: “This latest effort by Public Watchdogs runs counter to the expressed interest of the communities adjacent to the San Onofre nuclear plant by potentially stranding spent fuel on site, even when options for transport and off-site storage or disposal become available. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 41-year-old documented gang member was convicted Wednesday of murder and attempted murder in the shooting death of a career Navy man and the wounding of his cousin outside a comedy club at Horton Plaza.Jurors deliberated for nearly two days before finding Arrow Morris guilty of the two felony charges, in addition to sentence-enhancing allegations of using a firearm and three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, in connection with three guns investigators found during a search of his girlfriend's home.Morris, who is scheduled to be sentenced May 20, faces more than 80 years to life in prison for the killing of 43-year-old James Celani, who was struck in the head, neck and chest. His cousin was grazed in the leg.Deputy District Attorney Amy Maund said that on the night of June 10, 2017, following a violent confrontation with his girlfriend, Morris and his brother walked away from the club and encountered Celani and his cousin, who were walking past them in the opposite direction.Maund told jurors that either Celani or his cousin said "What's up?" to the Morris brothers as they walked past, to which Morris replied "Don't (expletive) talk to me," then began firing.The prosecutor said Morris, still in a rage over the confrontation with his girlfriend, took his anger out on Celani and his cousin, some of the first people he came across after leaving the club.The shooting happened to "a truly innocent, vulnerable victim," Maund said, "and it could have been anyone."Maund said several witnesses pointed to the shooter as a man wearing a red shirt, red hat and white jacket, which Morris can be seen wearing in surveillance footage from Horton Plaza and a 7-Eleven convenience store.Defense attorney Steward Dadmun contended that witnesses mistook his client for his brother, who, according to Dadmun, was the actual shooter. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 47-year-old man accused of intentionally driving a pickup truck off Sunset Cliffs and into the ocean with his twin toddler daughters inside pleaded not guilty today to attempted murder, kidnapping and other charges.Robert Brians, who is also charged in the 13-count criminal complaint with child abuse, making criminal threats, child abduction and burglary, is being held without bail and is due back in court July 22 for a readiness conference.He allegedly drove into the water on the morning of June 13 with his 2- year-old daughters inside the truck. The girls were hospitalized in stable condition, according to a GoFundMe page created to raise money for their medical bills.About 4:30 a.m. that day, the toddlers' mother called 911 to report that Brians had taken their children without permission and allegedly contacted her via ``numerous calls and texts ... clearly stating she may not see (them) again,'' according to the GoFundMe.com page.He allegedly threatened to drive the vehicle off the Coronado Bay Bridge, but was later spotted by officers on Hill Street near Cornish Drive and sped off, careening over the side of a cliff and landing upside down in the water, according to police.Moments later, a canine officer also responding to the emergency, 22- year SDPD veteran Jonathan Wiese, arrived in the area. Reaching the scene of the crash and seeing Brians' pickup upside down in the water, Wiese grabbed a long leash he uses for his service dog, wrapped it around his chest, gave the other end to fellow officers and rappelled down the precipice.Wiese then swam out to the foundering truck and rescued the children and Brians.
