ISLAMABAD, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan signed a number of trade deals worth about 10 billion U.S. dollars, visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Saturday.Addressing the China-Pakistan Business Cooperation Summit in Islamabad, Wen said the deals reflected the huge potential for expanding bilateral economic and trade cooperation. The two sides inked some 20 trade deals during Wen's visit covering projects in the sectors of new energy, agriculture, cotton yarn and non-ferrous metal imports.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao speaks during the Pakistan-China Business Cooperation Summit in Islamabad, Pakistan, Dec. 18, 2010. A major deal is aimed at developing wind and solar power. Another one is on remote sensing satellite between the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission and the China Great Wall Industry Corporation."Currently, the existing difficulties in our trade cooperation are temporary problems, which we could completely overcome with joint efforts," Wen said. The Chinese premier, who arrived here Friday, urged a boost in the scale of bilateral trade and investment. The China-Pakistan trade volume only accounted for one-tenth of Pakistan's overall foreign trade, he said, voicing his hope that the two-way trade could top 10 billion dollars as soon as possible. With regard to trade imbalance, Wen said China understood the concern of Pakistan on the imbalance, and has taken measures to address the issue."China is ready to work closely with Pakistan to push forward the building of a bilateral free trade area in an all-round way, and gradually grant zero-tariff status to more Pakistani products," he said.He vowed to send a trade and investment promotion delegation to Pakistan for purchase purposes at an appropriate time, hold commodity fairs for South Asian countries, and offer favorable terms for Pakistani products.Calling trade cooperation a link for the China-Pakistan cooperation, Wen said the bilateral trade has witnessed remarkable growth and benefited both peoples.Bilateral trade volume increased to 6.8 billion dollars in 2009 from 1 billion dollars in 2000.Though affected by the global financial crisis and natural disasters, the two-way trade in the first 10 months of 2010 reached the total volume of 2009, an increase of 27 percent over the same period of last year, Wen said.

BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's economic planner and price regulator, said Friday it has asked local governments to crack down on some gas stations selling diesel above the state-set prices.NDRC investigators found some gas stations have been selling diesel above state-set prices in the provinces of Sichuan, Hubei, Henan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Liaoning, Jiangxi and Shanxi and Chongqing Municipality. The NDRC has requested local governments to punish the offending gas stations. The stations were ordered to stop overcharging and turn over illegal incomes to authorities, according to a statement on the NDRC web-site.Also, the stations would receive punitive fines, it said.Among the violators, Yueyuan gas station in Xichang, Sichuan Province, sold No. 0 diesel for 9 yuan (1.35 U.S. dollars) per liter, as against the state-set 6.55 yuan. The NDRC said that consumers can call 12358 to complain about diesel overpricing and the price regulators will respond quickly. The latest measures were adopted in the wake of those publicized Tuesday, which were aimed to stop some refiners and diesel wholesalers from overcharging. An unprecedented diesel shortage has hit China's cities and markets, leading some wholesalers and gas stations to sell diesel above the state-set prices.Due to the diesel shortage, some enterprises suspended production and express deliveries turned into "snail deliveries."People found that it took much longer for buses to arrive and even some crematories found it hard to get enough diesel for cremations."We can't find enough diesel. Ten of the trucks in our company can't go out to deliver cargo. Our businesses are affected," said Du Zhanhai, head of a freight transportation company in Tangshan, north China's Hebei Province. The deadline for China's planned reduction in energy consumption is approaching. The country announced that it would reduce energy consumption by 20 percent per GDP unit during the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010).
BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's apparent consumption of crude steel is likely to reach 596 million tonnes this year, a year-on-year increase of 5.6 percent, according to a steel association official.Apparent consumption represents the sum of net imports and output, and can be used to estimate real consumption excluding inventory.Luo Bingsheng, deputy head of the China Iron and Steel Association, expected the country's crude steel output to climb 8.2 percent this year from one year earlier, to reach 624 million tonnes.Luo further noted that a rising investment in 2011 would result in an increase in China's steel demand. If the year-on-year growth of the country's social fixed assets investment maintained itself at around 20 percent next year, China's crude steel apparent consumption would see an annual increase of 40 million to 50 million tonnes next year, said Luo.
CHANGCHUN, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) - An electric short circuit in a shop was believed to be the cause of a shopping mall blaze that killed 19 people earlier this month in northeast China's Jilin Province, a spokesman with the provincial work safety bureau said Thursday. The fire broke out on Nov. 5 in Jilin Commercial Building, Jilin City and lasted 12 hours. It left 19 people dead, 24 others injured and took fire fighters 10 hours to extinguish the flames, which ravaged 15,830 square meters of the five-storey mall.Investigations found that a short circuit in Sishulang Shop on the first floor of the mall was the cause of the fire.Police have detained 14 people in connection with the fatal blaze. The families of each of the victims have received at least 250,000 yuan (37,600 U.S. dollars) in compensation from the government.
