SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — On Friday, there was confusion and frustration with Poway Unified School District's reopening plans this fall from parents like Mark Meadows. “I think they should make their decisions based on the facts. Not based on something that they made up or something that they misinterpreted,” Meadows said.In a letter sent out earlier this week, PUSD reported, in part, that it planned for the possibility to resume classes in-person after the county was off the state's monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. The letter reads, "However, the new metrics announced to San Diego County superintendents [Tuesday], require our county to be off the monitoring list for two 14-day cycles (a total of 28 consecutive days)."That 28-day part is incorrect, county officials said Friday.PUSD reported to parents that the district would continue with virtual learning through December. On Thursday night, Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps told ABC10 News, “The reason why we chose going to December was that after talking to our district administrators and staff, we wanted some continuity of learning for our children to ensure that so that we could finish whatever option we started with like finish a whole entire quarter or trimester.”“[If this goes through December] it would require us a lot of schedule shifting and possibly paying for some type of tutor or nanny to watch our child while they're at their virtual class during the day,” added Meadows.Dr. Kim-Phelps said she sent the letter after getting new guidelines during a tele-briefing on Tuesday with the county but the county confirmed Friday that PUSD's information is incorrect.Friday afternoon, PUSD reported that was no misunderstanding on its part and directed ABC10 News to a county slide that reads, in part, that on Day 28, schools can reopen for in-person instruction.PUSD added on Friday, “There's no change in our plans." 1909

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One man is behind bars after a series of events in Rancho Penasquitos, including nearly running over a firefighter. Around 2:30 p.m. California Highway Patrol received a report of a reckless vehicle on SR-76 near Cole Grade Road Monday. The blue Toyota RAV4 was reported after unsafely passing vehicles and speeding in the area. Shortly after, CHP reported that the driver - Falahi Abrahim - was involved in a crash and started a brush fire.Shortly after Cal Fire responded to the fire, 37-year-old Abrahim from fled the scene - nearly hitting the firefighter who was trying to help him.Police officers followed, but Abrahim refused to stop and a pursuit began. The pursuit continued westbound on SR-76 to I-15 and transitioned to I-15 Southbound. The vehicle continued to flee from officers on I-15 Southbound and exited the freeway at Camino Del Norte where the vehicle progressed eastbound.During the chase Abrahim failed to stop for two red lights at separate intersections and officers discontinued the pursuit in the interest of public safety.A San Diego Police Department helicopter continued to follow the car, communicating Abrahim's location to the CHP. At 3:11 p.m. the driver stopped near the 10000 block of Carmel Mountain Road. After a short foot pursuit, Abrahim was taken into custody and arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug and felony evading charges. The incident involving the assault of the firefighter at the collision scene is still under investigation. 1572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mostra Coffee, the San Diego-based coffee company that recently won the award for Best Roaster in the U.S., has opened its second brick-and-mortar store. The move is a risk, as many small businesses had to close or scale back during the coronavirus pandemic."Being an entrepreneur, it's just something that you pretty much fight for, and you are you're kind of programmed to just take a leap off the cliff even though you don't know what's happening," said Jelynn Malone, one of Mostra's co-owners.The new location is in 4S Ranch, an area of town that asked Mostra to move in. A petition in 2019 calling for the new location got more than 1,500 signatures."It was something that the community rallied for, and we felt that the community deserved it," said Malone. "So we just piecemeal this thing and slowly worked our way through to the point where we can actually open."But Malone admits it was scary taking that kind of risk during the Pandemic."Being a small business with over 20 employees, including my own family, it was very troubling and scary," she said. The company went through layoffs in the spring, and work on the new location slowed to a crawl. To keep the business going, Mostra built a website and app to allow for curbside pick-up and online ordering. Now that the new 4S Ranch location is open, Malone and her co-owners say the struggle has made their success more enjoyable."I'm so happy we made this decision, and I'm so happy with how the shop turned out. Everybody seems to love it so far." 1538
